Summary: In this study, a one-step electrodeposition method was used to prepare chitosan/Ag/polypyrrole films, and layer-by-layer self-assembly was used to introduce lignin sulphonate (LS) to obtain chitosan/Ag/polypyrrole/LS films. The antibacterial effects against E. coli and S. aureus were demonstrated, and the addition of self-assembled LS further improved the efficacy. The films also showed rapid and efficient endotoxin adsorption, with the electrostatic interactions between chitosan and endotoxin molecules playing a major role.

Summary: The formation of hydrogels relies heavily on the intricate chemistry between the constituents and efficient crosslinking methods. In this study, a hydrogel composed of chitosan, gelatin, and oxidized guar gum was fabricated using both physical and self-crosslinking approaches. Different levels of periodate oxidation were conducted, and the resulting hydrogels were characterized to compare the level of oxidized guar gum and the essential characteristics of the hydrogels, with a focus on hydrogel chemistry.

Summary: The study investigated the use of mantis shrimp exoskeleton to extract chitosan through different deacetylation times. Increasing deacetylation time led to higher deacetylation degree but lower extraction yield, intrinsic viscosity, and average molecular weight of chitosan. Composite films were developed by combining chitosan with agarose, and the properties of the films improved with higher agarose proportion.

Summary: Crosslinking affects the mechanical behavior and tissue metabolism of collagen-based tissues. Aging and diabetes alter the crosslinking type and density, thus changing tissue properties. High-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking and advanced-glycation end-products result in uniform deformation under daily activity, while low-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking does not. High-connectivity model displays more sliding, while AGEs induce instability in structures near the binding sites.

Summary: The potential of multi-layer nanoemulsions for improving the cellular uptake, antioxidant activity, and in vitro bioaccessibility of alpha-tocopherol was examined. The results showed that the multi-layer nanoemulsions significantly enhanced the cellular uptake and antioxidant activity of alpha-tocopherol compared to free coumarin 6. Furthermore, the use of chitosan and dextran sulfate as wall materials in the multi-layer nanoemulsions led to even higher cellular uptake, in vitro bioaccessibility, and antioxidant activity of alpha-tocopherol.
