Rotenone is an active ingredient that has been widely used as pesticide. However, rotenone is poorly soluble in water. Therefore, a water-soluble carrier is needed. Here, we synthesised, characterised and applied oleoyl-carboxymethyl chitosan for the first time as a carrier agent for rotenone. Oleoyl-carboxymethyl chitosan is soluble in acidic, neutral and basic media. The critical micelle concentration of oleoyl-carboxymethyl chitosan is 0.096 mg/mL. Oleoyl-carboxymethyl chitosan formed self-aggregates and exhibited spherical shape with the values of 35.5-66.4 nm. We studied the encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity of oleoyl-carboxymethyl chitosan micelles with different weight ratios of oleoyl-carboxymethyl chitosan to rotenone. We found an encapsulation efficiency of 97 % and a loading capacity of 0.97 % for oleoyl-carboxymethyl chitosan/rotenone 100:1 w/w. Oleoyl-carboxymethyl chitosan released 96.00 % of the rotenone loaded within 50 h. Overall, our findings show the feasibility of oleoyl-carboxymethyl chitosan as a novel water-solubilising agent for pesticide formulations.

Summary: In this study, poly(epsilon-caprolactrone) nanocapsules loaded with betel essential oil were used as anti-mosquito spray formulations for cotton and polyester fabrics for the first time. The release and retention of the oil on the fabrics were determined, and the repellent activity was evaluated. The nanocapsules exhibited high encapsulation efficiency and stability, increasing the durability of the fabrics and providing good mosquito repellency.

Summary: A magnetically separable nanocomposite of gamma-Fe2O3/montmorillonite (gamma-Fe2O3/Mt) with high photocatalytic activity for rhodamine B photodegradation has been successfully synthesized. The nanocomposite consists of uniformly dispersed gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles in a montmorillonite structure, and its degradation mechanism involves a significant contribution of the adsorption mechanism. The nanocomposite can be easily separated and reused due to its magnetism, without any chemical change even after repeated cycles.

Summary: The efficacy of GG-GO-Fe3O4 and PEC-GO-Fe3O4 nanocomposites as nanocarriers for controlling Aedes aegypti larvae with permethrin was investigated in this study. The physicochemical properties of the nanocomposites and their ability to load and release permethrin were analyzed. The results showed successful encapsulation of permethrin into the nanocarriers and prolonged release of permethrin for up to 16 hours. The release profiles of permethrin in rainwater were best described by the Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetic model.

Summary: This study successfully applied poly(epsilon-caprolactone) lipid-core nanocapsules in mosquito-repellent spray formulations for various fabrics. The results showed that the nanocapsule formulations exhibited excellent resistance to washing and heating on cotton and polyester fabrics, without causing irritation to human skin. The treated fabrics demonstrated effective mosquito repellency, even after multiple cycles of washing and heating. The application of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) lipid-core nanocapsules shows promising potential for enhancing the longevity and effectiveness of insect repellents on functional textiles.
