Summary: This study aimed to identify and test a large set of vaping prevention ads and examine how objective message elements affect youth. The results showed that themes related to negative health consequences, negative imagery, and warning symbols had a positive impact on vaping prevention message effectiveness. On the contrary, industry targeting, flavor themes, and images of faces had negative effects on message effectiveness. Ads with flavor themes were associated with increased vaping appeal.

Gender differences were detected, indicating the importance of focusing on attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavior control for girls, and subjective norms for boys in alcohol preventive programs.
