Purpose of reviewBerries belong to the best dietary sources of bioactive compounds, which exert a synergistic and cumulative effect on promotion of human health and prevention of diseases. The present review presents the most recent findings of animal and human studies regarding the health benefits of berries in terms of prevention and treatment of obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.Recent findingsIn the last years, there was a growing number of evidence from human epidemiological and interventional studies, which emphasized the role of berries in the management of metabolic diseases. Based on the results from recent clinical trials, it can be established that a berry diet rich in antioxidants and bioactive phytochemicals has beneficial effects on hepatic function, increase of insulin sensitivity and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, decrease of serum glucose and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and finally is inversely associated with the incidence of type 2 diabetes.SummaryNumerous recent studies have shown that berries provide great benefits in preventing or mitigating metabolic disorders. The results of this review indicate that regular long-term consumption of different berries could potentially delay the progression of metabolic syndrome and comorbidities.

ROS Modulating Effects of Lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.) Polyphenols on Obese Adipocyte Hypertrophy and Vascular Endothelial Dysfunction

Katarzyna Kowalska, Radoslaw Dembczynski, Agata Golabek, Mariola Olkowicz, Anna Olejnik

Summary: The study found that polyphenol fractions from lingonberry fruit can reduce intracellular ROS generation and triglyceride content in hypertrophied adipocytes, while regulating key adipokines and alleviating inflammation. Consuming polyphenol-rich lingonberry fruit may help prevent and treat obesity and endothelial dysfunction.

Permeability of the Perindopril Arginine under In Vitro Conditions across Caco-2 Monolayer and Biomimetic Phospholipid Membrane

Marta Kus, Klaudia Gorniak, Anna Olejnik, Paulina Skupin-Mrugalska, Izabela Ibragimow, Hanna Piotrowska-Kempisty

Summary: This study evaluated the permeation of perindopril arginine across biological and artificial biomimetic membranes, and found relatively poor permeability. Results from the non-cell-based model demonstrated higher transport of PA.

Modulating effects of steviol and steviol glycosides on adipogenesis, lipogenesis, glucose uptake and insulin resistance in 3T3-L1 adipocyte model

Jakub Michal Kurek, Joanna Zielinska-Wasielica, Katarzyna Kowalska, Zbigniew Krejpcio, Anna Olejnik

Summary: This study demonstrates the inhibitory effect of stevioside and steviol on adipogenesis and lipogenesis, leading to decreased lipid accumulation. Additionally, they can enhance glucose uptake in insulin-resistant cells and alleviate symptoms of insulin resistance.

In vitro modeling of endometriosis and endometriotic microenvironment - Challenges and recent advances

Agata Golabek-Grenda, Anna Olejnik

Summary: This review summarizes the range of available in vitro experimental systems used in endometriotic studies, from simple cell models to complex 3D models. The focus of the research is to understand the relationship between the microenvironment of the ectopic lesions and different stages, phenotypes, and symptoms, and to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic concepts.

Thermo-oxidative stability of asymmetric distigmasterol-modified acylglycerols as novel derivatives of plant sterols

M. Rudzinska, A. Olejnik, A. Grygier, K. Kowalska, D. Kmiecik, A. Grudniewska, A. Chojnacka, W. G. Ladkowski, G. Maciejewska, R. Przybylski

Summary: This study investigated the thermo-oxidative stability of distigmasterol-modified acylglycerols and compared the products formed during heating with free stigmasterol and stigmasteryl esters. The results showed that the formation of degradation products was influenced by temperature and the chemical structure of lipids. Cytotoxicity and genotoxicity tests confirmed that the modified acylglycerols had no toxic effects on normal human cells.

Bioactive Substances of Potato Juice Reveal Synergy in Cytotoxic Activity against Cancer Cells of Digestive System Studied In Vitro

Przemyslaw Lukasz Kowalczewski, Anna Olejnik, Martyna Natalia Wieczorek, Joanna Zembrzuska, Katarzyna Kowalska, Jacek Lewandowicz, Grazyna Lewandowicz

Summary: More and more literature data show the health benefits of potato juice, but it is not clear which compounds in potato juice are biologically active. This study aimed to determine the antiproliferative effect of digested potato juice and its processing products. The results showed that glycoalkaloids exhibited cytotoxicity against all cell lines studied, while phenolic acids did not show cytotoxicity. There was a correlation between cytotoxic potency and glycoalkaloids content in all potato juice products.

Co-interaction of nitrofuran antibiotics and the saponin-rich extract on gram-negative bacteria and colon epithelial cells

Adam Grzywaczyk, Wojciech Smulek, Anna Olejnik, Urszula Guzik, Agnieszka Nowak, Ewa Kaczorek

Summary: The large-scale use of nitrofurans poses risks of resistance and toxicity in the environment. This study investigates the impact of saponins from Sapindus mukorossi on the antimicrobial properties of nitrofuran antibiotics. The results demonstrate a synergistic bactericidal effect of saponins with nitrofurantoin or furazolidone, without toxic effects on human colon epithelial cells.

Anti-proliferative potential and oxidative reactivity of thermo-oxidative degradation products of stigmasterol and stigmasteryl esters for human intestinal cells

Maria Kasprzak, Magdalena Rudzinska, Wojciech Juzwa, Anna Olejnik

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the anti-proliferative potential and genotoxicity of thermo-oxidatively treated stigmasterol (ST), stigmasteryl linoleate (ST-LA), and oleate (ST-OA) in normal human intestinal cells. The results showed that stigmasteryl esters had a significantly lower potential to affect intestinal cell viability and proliferation than non-esterified ST, regardless of heating. Thermo-oxidative derivatives of ST and ST-LA may evoke harmful gastrointestinal effects due to their high oxidative reactivity towards intestinal cells.

Thermo-oxidative stability and safety of new acylglycerols with stigmasterol residue: Effects of fatty acids saturation and position in the glycerol backbone

M. Rudzinska, A. Olejnik, A. Grygier, K. Kowalska, D. Kmiecik, A. Chojnacka, W. Gladkowski, A. Grudniewska, R. Przybylski

Summary: The safety and thermoxidative stability of new diacyl-stigmasterylcarbonoyl-sn-glycerols (DAStGs) with different fatty acids and stigmasterol at different positions were studied. The compounds with stigmasterol at the sn-2 position showed better stability after heating, and the degradation of stigmasterol was lower in compounds with oleic acid compared to palmitic acid. The content of SOPs and the level of dimers had a significant effect on the cytotoxicity of heated DAStGs.

Natural resveratrol analogs differentially target endometriotic cells into apoptosis pathways

Agata Golabek-Grenda, Mariusz Kaczmarek, Wojciech Juzwa, Anna Olejnik

Summary: The specific characteristics of endometriotic cells include their ability to evade apoptosis and abnormal response to apoptotic stimuli. Natural resveratrol analogs, such as piceatannol, polydatin, and pterostilbene, show potential in modulating apoptosis in endometriosis. Pterostilbene is the most effective in targeting cell death pathways and increasing apoptotic proportion in endometriotic cells. The study provides valuable insight into the apoptogenic activity of resveratrol and its analogs and highlights the therapeutic potential of pterostilbene in endometriosis.
