This review examines the role of coronavirus spike protein and ACE2 receptor in infection, and discusses the therapeutic effect of inhibiting ACE2, providing insights for finding effective treatment targets in research.
With the global expansion of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the declaration of its outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by the World Health Organization, there is an urgent need for vaccines and medicines to prevent and treat COVID-19. The responsible pathogen for the disease is the newly severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) 2 belonging to the same family of viruses SARS-CoV and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus that originally are zoonotic and have been associated with severe illness during the outbreaks in 2003 and 2012, respectively. The virulence of coronavirus strains is mainly associated with variations in surface proteins mediating cellular entry of the virus, which can help in finding effective therapeutic targets. In this review, we seek evidence showing the role of coronavirus spike protein (S-protein) and its potential cellular receptor, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), during infection of coronaviruses, including the newly SARS-CoV-2 and its similar strain SARS-CoV. This review also discusses the therapeutic effect of inhibiting the renin-angiotensin system cascade, a target of ACE2, in patients having coronavirus with cardiovascular disease.

Cardioprotective effects of minocycline against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity

Yazdan Naderi, Sara Khosraviani, Saba Nasiri, Fahimeh Hajiaghaei, Ehsan Aali, Tannaz Jamialahmadi, Maciej Banach, Amirhossein Sahebkar

Summary: The study evaluated the cardioprotective effects of minocycline against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity in adult male rats. Results showed that minocycline significantly decreased the activity of lactate dehydrogenase and creatine kinase MB, while increasing the activity of catalase and superoxide dismutase in cardiac tissue. Minocycline also reduced the levels of malondialdehyde, TNF-alpha, and IL-18 in cardiac tissue, and alleviated the tissue damage caused by doxorubicin.

Chenoor Poorshamohammad, Luguang Liu, Xurui Cheng, Amir Abbas Momtazi-Borojeni, Jie Chai

Summary: In this study, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were synthesized using plant extract and characterized by physical and chemical techniques. The quasi-spherical nanoparticles of mean diameter 20-50 nm were observed through SEM imaging. The XRD pattern confirmed the metallic gold composition of the nanoparticles. The biologically synthesized AuNPs showed cytotoxic and anti-gastric carcinoma effects against cancer cell lines, indicating their potential in cancer treatment.

Could Lowering Phytosterol Absorption as Part of Lipid-Lowering Therapy Have a Beneficial Effect on Residual Risk?

Panagiotis Anagnostis, Vasileios Kotsis, Maciej Banach, Dimitri P. P. Mikhailidis

Summary: Plant sterols, similar to cholesterol, can only be obtained through dietary sources and have the potential to lower cholesterol levels. However, high concentrations of phytosterols may increase the risk of atherosclerosis. Medications like ezetimibe can effectively reduce cholesterol and phytosterol absorption, but it is yet to be determined if this translates into a reduction in residual cardiovascular risk for patients.

Advances in the Pharmacological Management of Diabetic Nephropathy: A 2022 International Update

Rosaria Vincenza Giglio, Angelo Maria Patti, Ali Abbas Rizvi, Anca Panta Stoian, Marcello Ciaccio, Nikolaos Papanas, Andrej Janez, Alper Sonmez, Maciej Banach, Amirhossein Sahebkar, Manfredi Rizzo

Summary: Diabetic nephropathy is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease globally, and its pathogenesis involves increased pressure, activity of the renin-angiotensin system, and oxidative stress. Current treatment options focus on optimizing blood pressure and blood glucose targets, but new drug classes such as GLP-1 RAs, SGLT-2is, and inhibitors of mineralocorticoid receptor-mediated sodium reabsorption show positive effects on kidney function in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This review aims to provide an update on therapeutic options for preventing or slowing the onset and progression of diabetic nephropathy.

Summary: This study used Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the relationship between plasma short chain fatty acids (SCFA), renal function, and risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The results showed that there was no significant association between plasma valerate (an SCFA) and CKD, but there was a positive correlation between plasma valerate and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in the total population and among non-diabetic individuals.

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence, the most common symptoms, and the risk factors for development of post-COVID syndrome in patients during a 12-month follow-up after recovery from COVID-19. After 12 months, 65.7% of the patients still experienced persistent symptoms, with the most common symptoms being fatigue and neurocognitive symptoms. Female sex and severe COVID-19 course were associated with the persistence of clinical symptoms.
