Type I and III IFN-mediated antiviral actions counteracted by SARS-CoV-2 proteins and host inherited factors

Jorge Quarleri, M. Victoria Delpino

Summary: Research has shown that SARS-CoV-2 infection can lead to different patterns of disease progression, with interferon playing a key role in the process. The effectiveness of IFN and its role in disease outcomes are influenced by both viral and host factors.

Mitochondrial Dynamics and VMP1-Related Selective Mitophagy in Experimental Acute Pancreatitis

Virginia Vanasco, Alejandro Ropolo, Daniel Grasso, Diego S. Ojeda, Maria Noe Garcia, Tamara A. Vico, Tamara Orquera, Jorge Quarleri, Silvia Alvarez, Maria I. Vaccaro

Summary: Mitophagy and zymophagy are selective autophagy pathways induced in acute pancreatitis, with mitochondrial dysfunction and changes in mitochondrial dynamics observed. A novel DRP1-Parkin1-VMP1 selective autophagy pathway was identified during acute pancreatitis, mediating the selective degradation of damaged mitochondria and providing insights for potential therapeutic strategies.

Biological Characterization of Hepatitis B virus Genotypes: Their Role in Viral Replication and Antigen Expression

Maria Mercedes Elizalde, Luciana Tadey, Lilia Mammana, Jorge Fabian Quarleri, Rodolfo Hector Campos, Diego Martin Flichman

Summary: This study provides new insights into the biological characteristics of HBV genotypes, showing significant differences in replication capacity and antigen expression among different genotypes. Understanding these differences may help to elucidate the differential role of genotypes in the pathogenesis of HBV.

Proinflammatory Microenvironment During Kingella kingae Infection Modulates Osteoclastogenesis

Ayelen Ivana Pesce Viglietti, Franco Agustin Sviercz, Cinthya Alicia Marcela Lopez, Rosa Nicole Freiberger, Jorge Quarleri, Maria Victoria Delpino

Summary: Kingella kingae is an emerging pathogen that causes septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, and bacteremia in children aged 6 to 48 months. Infection with K. kingae directly stimulates osteoclastogenesis and indirectly through a potent pro-inflammatory response that drives macrophages to become functional osteoclasts. Additionally, the osteoclastogenic capability of K. kingae is counteracted by their outer membrane vesicles in a concentration-dependent manner.

Monkeypox: considerations for the understanding and containment of the current outbreak in non-endemic countries

Jorge Quarleri, M. Victoria Delpino, Veronica Galvan

Summary: The neglected and rare zoonotic disease caused by monkeypox virus (MPV) has recently spread widely, resulting in the largest known monkeypox outbreak outside of Africa. MPV is transmitted directly by either person-to-person, -animal, or virus-contaminated fomite contact, with symptoms including fever, skin lesions, and lymphadenopathies. No deaths have been associated with the current outbreak, and diagnosis with molecular techniques is recommended, with vaccines and drugs available for immunity to MPV.

HIV-induced bystander cell death in astrocytes requires cell-to-cell viral transmission

Cintia Cevallos, Diego S. Ojeda, Lautaro Sanchez, Javier Urquiza, Maria Victoria Delpino, Jorge Quarleri

Summary: HIV infection can result in the death of astrocytes through cell-to-cell contact with infected cells, while the infected astrocytes can counteract this death signal and spread the contagious bystander cell death to neighboring uninfected cells.

Poliomyelitis is a current challenge: long-term sequelae and circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus

Jorge Quarleri

Summary: The World Health Organization Western Pacific Region has been free of polio for over 20 years, but two challenges remain. Firstly, elderly polio survivors experience late polio sequelae that greatly affect their daily lives and quality of life. Secondly, vaccine-derived poliovirus strains are circulating and pose a significant obstacle to polio elimination. Maintaining high vaccination rates and improving living conditions in poorer nations are crucial for eradicating polio.
