Prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at high altitude: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Background and objective: Recently, several studies have investigated the prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at high altitude (>1,500 m). However, much remains to be understood about the correlation between altitude and COPD. We aimed to summarize the prevalence of COPD at high-altitudes and find out if altitude could be a risk factor for COPD. Methods: We searched PubMed/Medline, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, SCOPUS, OVID, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM) and Embase databases from inception to April 30th, 2019, with no language restriction. We used STATA 14.0 to analyze the extracted data. A random-effect model was used to calculate the combined OR and 95% CI. Heterogeneity was assessed by the I-2 statistic versus P-value. We performed a subgroup analysis to analyze possible sources of heterogeneity. The Egger's test and the Begg's test were used to assess any publication bias. Results: We retrieved 4,574 studies from seven databases and finally included 10 studies (54,578 participants). Males ranged from 18.8% to 49.3% and the population who smoked ranged from 3.3% to 53.3%. The overall prevalence of COPD at high-altitude was 10.0% (95% CI [0.08-0.12], P < 0.001). In a subgroup analysis, based on different regions, the results showed that the prevalence in Asia was higher than that in Europe and America. Seven studies compared the relationship between the prevalence of COPD at high-altitudes and the lowlands. The results showed that altitude was not an independent risk factor for the prevalence of COPD (ORadj = 1.18, 95% CI [0.85-1.62], P = 0.321). There was no publication bias among the studies. Conclusions: Our study found a higher prevalence of COPD at high-altitudes than those from average data. However, altitude was not found to be an independent risk factor for developing COPD (PROSPERO Identifier: CRD42019135012).

Structure-Property Relationship of Cyano-Functionalized Conjugated Polymers for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Summary: Conjugated polymers (CPs) have received increasing attention in photocatalysis due to their stability and molecular tunability. In this study, a new efficient cyano (CN) engineering approach was proposed to enhance the photocatalytic performance of CPs. Three CP-based photocatalysts with different CN contents were synthesized to investigate the relationship between CN functionalization and photocatalytic activity. Experimental and theoretical studies revealed that CN functionalization strengthened the donor-acceptor (D-A) interaction, enhanced light absorption, charge separation/transfer efficiency, hydrophilicity of CPs, and facilitated the output of photoinduced electrons from CPs to Pt cocatalyst.

Exercise modalities for type 2 diabetes: A systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomized trials

These findings could contribute to the development of risk prediction models and improve management and education for child-bearing or early pregnant women.

The efficacy and safety of glucocorticoid for perioperative patients with hepatectomy: a systematic review and meta-analysis

It also improves liver function and reduces the release of inflammatory cytokines. However, further research is needed to confirm these findings.

A Meta-analysis of the Clinical Efficacy of the Head-of-Bed Elevation for Patients With Acquired Brain Injury

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of head-of-bed elevation on patients with acquired brain injury (ABI). The results showed that elevating the head of the bed by 30 degrees can significantly reduce intracranial pressure (ICP), but did not have statistical differences on cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) and disability at 90 days. Therefore, head-of-bed elevation of 30 degrees may be an effective noninvasive nursing practice for the prognosis and rehabilitation of ABI patients.

Pilates and multiple health outcomes: An umbrella review

Summary: This study conducted an umbrella review to summarize the evidence of associations between Pilates and multiple health outcomes, and evaluated the strength and validity of these associations. It found that Pilates can reduce body mass index and body fat percentage, relieve pain and disability, and improve sleep quality and balance. However, the certainty of the evidence was mostly low, and further high quality randomized controlled trials are needed to support these promising findings.

Summary: We report on measurements of sequential Y suppression in Au + Au collisions at RHIC with the STAR detector. The nuclear modification factors (RAA) for Y(1S) and Y(2S) in the 0%-60% centrality class are 0.40 and 0.26, respectively, while the upper limit of the Y(3S) RAA is 0.17. This provides experimental evidence that the Y(3S) is significantly more suppressed than the Y(1S) at RHIC, and the level of suppression for Y(1S) is comparable to that observed at the Large Hadron Collider.

Summary: We report on the production of tritons (t) in Au + Au collisions at midrapidity ( |η| < 0.5) with beam energies of √sNN 7.7-200 GeV. The yield ratio Nt x Np/N2d, which is sensitive to the fluctuation of local neutron density, decreases monotonically with increasing charged-particle multiplicity (dNch/dη) and follows a scaling behavior. Enhancements in the yield ratios are observed in central collisions at 19.6 and 27 GeV, with a combined significance of 4.1 sigma, and are not seen in peripheral collisions or calculations without critical fluctuation. The implications of these results on the QCD phase structure and the production mechanism of light nuclei in heavy-ion collisions are discussed.

Association of modifiable lifestyle with colorectal cancer incidence and mortality according to metabolic status: prospective cohort study

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the individual and joint effects of modifiable healthy lifestyle and metabolic health status on colorectal cancer incidence and mortality. The results showed that adherence to a healthy lifestyle could substantially reduce the burden of colorectal cancer, and behavioral lifestyle changes should be encouraged for colorectal cancer prevention even in participants with metabolic syndrome.

Summary: This study aims to examine the usage of evidence assessment tools in systematic reviews of management and education. The results show that only 34.8% of the systematic reviews used evidence assessment tools, with a total of 66 different tools being utilized. "Risk of Bias" and its updated version were the most frequently used tools. The study also highlights the need for improved understanding and reporting of evidence assessment tools among researchers and users.
