Role of salicylic acid in regulating ethylene and physiological characteristics for alleviating salinity stress on germination, growth and yield of sweet pepper

Background. During a preliminary study, effects of 0, 20, 40, and 60 mM NaCl salinity were assessed on germination rate in relation to electrolyte leakage (EL) in sweet pepper. Results explored significant rises in ethylene evolution from seeds having more EL. It was, therefore, hypothesized that excessive ethylene biosynthesis in plants due to salinity stress might be a root cause of low crop productivity. As salicylic acid is one of the potent ethylene inhibitors, thus SA was used to combat effects of ethylene produced under salinity stress of 60 mM NaCl on different physiological and morphological characteristics of sweet pepper. Methodology. The effect of 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6 mM SA was evaluated on seed germination, growth and yield of sweet pepper cv. Yolo wonder at salinity stress on 60 mM NaCl. Seeds were primed with SA concentrations and incubated till 312 h in an incubator to study germination. Same SA concentrations were sprayed on foliage of plants grown in saline soil (60 mM NaCl). Results. Seeds primed by 0.2 to 0.3 mM SA improved germination rate by 33% due to suppression of ethylene from 3.19 (control) to 2.23-2.70 mg plate(-1). Electrolyte leakage reduced to 20.8-21.3% in seeds treated by 0.2-0.3 mM SA compared to 39.9% in untreated seeds. Results also explored that seed priming by 0.3 mM improved TSS, SOD and chlorophyll contents from 13.7 to 15.0 mg C I FW, 4.64 to 5.38 activity h(-1) 100 mg(-1) and 89 to 102 ug g(-1) compared to untreated seeds, respectively. Results also explore that SA up to 0.2 mM SA applied on plant foliage improved LAI (5-13%), photosynthesis (4-27%), WUE (11-57%), dry weight (5-20%), SOD activity (4-20%) and finally fruit yield (4-20%) compared to untreated plants by ameliorating effect of 60 mM NaCl. Foliar application of SA also caused significant increase in nutrient use efficiency due to significant variations in POD and SOD activities. Conclusion. Salicylic acid suppressed ethylene evolution from germinating seeds up to 30% under stress of 60 mM NaCl due to elevated levels of TSS and SOD activity. Foliar application of SA upgraded SOD by lowering POD activity to improve NUE particularly K use efficiency at salinity stress of 60 mM NaCl. Application of 0.2 and 0.3 mM SA emerged as the most effective concentrations of SA for mitigating 60 mM NaCl stress on different physiological and morphological characteristics of sweet pepper.

Role of Chinese government and Public-Private Partnership in combating COVID-19 in China

Summary: This paper examines the effectiveness of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) strategies employed by the Chinese government in response to COVID-19. The study finds that public governance strategies have played a role in controlling the severity and frequency of the pandemic. The Chinese government has shown consistency in health and stringency measures, and has successfully collaborated with the private sector to build makeshift hospitals and implement 5G technology. The study suggests that other countries should involve private sectors, seek assistance from the Chinese government, and follow their quarantine and prudent policies to control the spread of COVID-19.

Enhancement of Anaerobic Digestion of Cow Manure Through Inoculation Under Mesophilic Conditions

Summary: A study investigated the effect of ruminant intestinal waste on anaerobic digestion of cow manure, finding that a ratio of 9:1, 7:3, and 1:1 of cow manure to intestinal waste demonstrated a good synergistic effect, resulting in higher cumulative biogas yields. Furthermore, a 9:1 ratio of cow manure to intestinal waste showed the highest removal rates of chemical oxygen demand (COD), volatile solids (VS), and total solids (TS).

Controlling Arsenic Contamination Through Bentonite Clays: a Batch Sorption Study

Summary: Arsenic (As) contamination of water is a crucial issue that affects human health. Bentonite clays have been investigated as a potential candidate for treating As-contaminated water. In this study, bentonite deposits in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, were evaluated for their As adsorption capacity and mechanism. The results showed that Nowshera bentonite had the highest adsorption capacity and affinity for As. The findings suggest that the clay quarry in Nowshera could be utilized for the effective purification of As-polluted drinking water.

Enhancing Drought Tolerance in Wheat Cultivars through Nano-ZnO Priming by Improving Leaf Pigments and Antioxidant Activity

Summary: Climate change and global warming have led to the need for biologically viable drought-mitigation strategies in wheat cultivation. This study tested two wheat cultivars subjected to different doses of ZnO nanoparticles before sowing. The results showed that ZnO nanoparticles, particularly at a 120 ppm dose under 100% field capacity, improved the growth and mineral contents of the wheat cultivars, making it a potential recommendation for wheat growers.

Do Remittance Inflows, Investment Attributes, and Regional Integration Accelerate Sustainable Economic Growth in Asia?

Summary: In order to promote regional economic development and sustainability, foreign, domestic, and workers' remittance investment each play a role in advancing the economic cycle. This study investigates the impact of foreign direct investment inflows (FDI), private capital investment (PCI), and workers' remittance (RMTw) as independent variables, as well as demographic pressure as a control variable, on economic growth. Additionally, the role of globalization as a proxy for regional integration in Asia's developing and emerging economies is analyzed. The results suggest that FDI and PCI contribute to sustainable economic growth (SEG) in Asia by promoting infrastructure development and trade activities, while RMTw has a negative effect on SEG due to economic pressure and reduced workforce and idle money. Regional integration strongly supports SEG in Asia by boosting trade, social, and political activities. It is concluded that Asian SEG is influenced by foreign and domestic inflows and regional integration, and governments should relax investment regulations and channelize remittance through financial institutions to actively contribute to the economic cycle.

Optimizing Productivity of Buffel and Sudan Grasses Using Optimal Nitrogen Fertilizer Application under Arid Conditions

Summary: Buffel and Sudan grasses, which are the supreme drought-tolerant grasses in arid and semiarid areas, have limited growth due to nitrogen limitation. This study demonstrates that optimal growth and yield of these grasses can be achieved by applying nitrogen fertilizer at a rate of 105 kg N ha-1 in Mandera County.

In addition, it can also increase the soil cation exchange capacity, bacteria and fungi population. The study suggests that biochar has the potential to improve soil fertility.

Transmission efficiency of Cotton leaf curl Khokhran virus /Cotton leaf curl Multan betasatellite complex by two whitefly cryptic species in Pakistan

Summary: This study compared the transmission efficiency of Cotton leaf curl Khokhran virus and associated Cotton leaf curl Multan betasatellite (CLCuKoV/CLCuMB) by two characterized whitefly cryptic species (Asia II-1 and Asia II-5). The results showed that Asia II-1 had a higher transmission efficiency in cotton and bitter gourd plants, while Asia II-5 did not show symptoms in other host plants. These findings contribute to our understanding of the role of whitefly cryptic species in CLCuD transmission and will help in developing management strategies for controlling whitefly cryptic species and CLCuD transmission in Pakistan.

Comparative effects of biochar and NPK on wheat crops under different management systems
