Background: Vitamin D was studied in regards to its possible impact on body mass reduction and metabolic changes in adults and children with obesity yet there were no studies assessing the impact of vitamin D supplementation during a weight management program in children and adolescence. The aim of our study was to assess the influence of 26 weeks of vitamin D supplementation in overweight and obese children undergoing an integrated 12-months' long weight loss program on body mass reduction, body composition and bone mineral density. Methods: A double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial. Vitamin D deficient patients (<30 ng/ml level of vitamin D) aged 6-14, participating in multidisciplinary weight management program were randomly allocated to receiving vitamin D (1200 IU) or placebo for the first 26 weeks of the intervention. Results: Out of the 152 qualified patients, 109 (72%) completed a full cycle of four visits scheduled in the program. There were no difference in the level of BMI (body mass index) change - both raw BMI and BMI centiles. Although the reduction of BMI centiles was greater in the vitamin D vs. placebo group (-4.28 8.43 vs. -2.53 +/- 6.10) the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.319). Similarly the reduction in fat mass-assessed both using bioimpedance and DEXa was achieved, yet the differences between the groups were not statistically significant. Conclusions: Our study ads substantial results to support the thesis on no effect of vitamin D supplementation on body weight reduction in children and adolescents with vitamin D insufficiency undergoing a weight management program.

Viktoria A. Kovacs, Gregor Starc, Mirko Brandes, Monika Kaj, Rok Blagus, Bojan Leskosek, Thomas Suesse, Elek Dinya, Benjamin C. Guinhouya, Viviana Zito, Paulo M. Rocha, Benito Perez Gonzalez, Anna Kontsevaya, Michal Brzezinski, Radu Bidiugan, Anita Kiraly, Tamas Csanyi, Anthony D. Okely

Summary: This study investigated the physical activity and screen time of European children during the COVID-19 pandemic. It found that over half of the children actively participated in online physical education classes, but most exceeded the recommended daily screen time of 2 hours. In countries less affected by the pandemic, outdoor play, daily routines, and online physical education activities were associated with healthy levels of physical activity and screen time.

The Current Role of Parathyroid Fine-Needle Biopsy (P-FNAB) with iPTH-Washout Concentration (iPTH-WC) in Primary Hyperparathyroidism: A Single Center Experience and Literature Review

Lukasz Obolonczyk, Izabela Karwacka, Piotr Wisniewski, Krzysztof Sworczak, Tomasz Oseka

Summary: This study presents the experience with 143 cases of P-FNAB with iPTH-WC assessment and compares it with other imaging techniques. The results show that P-FNAB with iPTH-WC is a highly sensitive method for localizing parathyroid adenoma during PHPT, surpassing the sensitivity of Tc99-MIBI. Furthermore, P-FNAB has mild complications and can be considered a safe procedure.

Summary: In this study, the incidence of thyroid lesions in early ADPKD patients was investigated and compared to previous population studies. The results showed no increased incidence of thyroid gland lesions in early ADPKD patients, suggesting that factors other than defective cilia signaling may be involved in the formation of focal thyroid lesions. Additionally, the rate of progression of kidney function decline did not seem to be associated with a higher prevalence of thyroid pathology.

Summary: This study assessed the nutritional status and eating habits of children with Down syndrome. The results showed that children with obesity and overweight had abnormalities in lipid and oxidative stress parameters. Children who were overweight showed more interest in food compared to those with normal body weight. Additionally, there was insufficient consumption of protein, vegetables, whole grain products, fruits, seeds, nuts, and products rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Therefore, proper nutritional education, nutritional control, and management of metabolic problems are crucial for this group of patients.

Age Prediction from Low Resolution, Dual-Energy X-ray Images Using Convolutional Neural Networks

Kamil Janczyk, Jacek Ruminski, Tomasz Neumann, Natalia Glowacka, Piotr Wisniewski

Summary: Age prediction from X-rays is an important research topic with clinical and practical applications. This study used low-resolution full-body X-ray absorptiometry images to train deep learning models for age prediction. The proposed preprocessing framework and adapted convolutional neural network models achieved accurate age prediction by focusing on spatial features.

Summary: Children with severe CNS impairment are at risk of nutritional deficit requiring long-term intervention. Enteral nutrition is commonly implemented through tubes, and the relationship between this nutrition and hyperglycemia is often discussed. This study aimed to assess carbohydrate metabolism in children with severe CNS impairment receiving enteral nutrition delivered via various tubes. Results showed that more than half of the patients were undernourished, and the actual caloric intake was 50 (37.7-68.8) kcal/kg.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the potential benefits of vitamin D supplementation in preventing diabetes and found that it does not reduce insulin resistance or the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in prediabetes. Due to the variation in study designs and biases, clear interpretation of the results is not possible, and long-term and well-designed studies are still required.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the effects of long-term parenteral nutrition in children and healthy children on aluminum concentration and urinary excretion. The study found higher serum aluminum concentrations and urinary aluminum excretion in children who started parenteral nutrition in the neonatal period. Only 12% of children on chronic parenteral nutrition had serum aluminum concentrations below 5 μg/L. Healthy children in the control group had higher serum aluminum concentrations, suggesting the influence of environment and diet on aluminum levels.

Nutritional Status and Metabolism in Celiac Disease: Narrative Review

Aleksandra Medza, Agnieszka Szlagatys-Sidorkiewicz

Summary: This review summarizes the findings on the nutritional status of patients with celiac disease (CD). Malnutrition, including over- and undernutrition, is common in CD patients at diagnosis and during treatment. Clinical presentations of CD vary widely, and evaluating nutritional parameters is beneficial for defining dietary needs and developing a balanced diet. A gluten-free diet (GFD) is the cornerstone of CD therapy, improving nutritional status, but malnutrition and metabolic consequences may still occur.
