Summary: The study investigated the effects of α-glycerol monolaurate (α-GML) supplementation on weaned piglets, showing that it reduced diarrhea rate, improved intestinal morphology, nutrient digestibility, antioxidant capacity, and immune status, and ameliorated gut microbiota. Alpha-GML supplementation at 1,000 mg/kg promoted beneficial bacteria colonization and inhibited harmful bacteria in the piglets' intestines, ultimately improving their overall health and digestion.

Summary: Accumulating evidence suggests that gut microbiota plays a critical role in human health as a mediator of the gut-brain axis. Altered gut microbial profiles have been linked to increased vulnerability to psychiatric disorders, such as autism, depression, and schizophrenia. However, the specific cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying this association remain unknown.

Summary: Obesity, an inappropriate increase in weight related to height, is a major pandemic of the 21st century. The gut microbial ecosystem plays a role in obesity through its impact on systemic inflammation, immune response, energy harvest, and gut-host interaction. Metabolomics, the study of low-molecular-weight molecules involved in metabolic pathways, can be used to study the relationship between host metabolism and gut microbiota. This review discusses clinical and preclinical studies exploring the association of obesity and metabolic disorders with various gut microbiome profiles, as well as the effects of dietary interventions on gut microbiome composition and the metabolome. While nutritional interventions can support weight loss in obese individuals, there is no consensus on the most effective dietary protocol, both in the short and long term. Metabolite profiling and gut microbiota composition offer potential predictors for obesity control and determining optimal nutritional interventions, but more randomized trials are needed to apply these findings to clinical practice.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic and relapsing inflammatory gastrointestinal condition that cannot be completely cured due to its complex pathogenesis. Glycerol monolaurate (GML) has been found to have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immunoregulatory properties. Research on mice showed that GML pretreatment was more effective in reducing weight loss, disease activity index, colonic inflammation, and proinflammatory responses compared to cotreatment. Furthermore, the increase in beneficial gut bacteria and fecal short-chain fatty acids after GML pretreatment contributed to faster and significant remission of colitis.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between gut microbiota and serum metabolism in the treatment of colorectal cancer using the model prescription FFCT. The results showed that dysbiosis of gut microbiota in tumor-bearing mice reduced the serum metabolites related to FFCT, and FFCT could correct the disordered gut microbiota of colorectal tumor-bearing mice to exert efficacy.

Summary: This study aimed to explore novel antidiabetic strains from Lactobacillus plantarum and evaluated their potential through in vitro and in vivo models. Lactobacillus plantarum strain YJ7 showed high adhesion rates and antioxidant abilities, while strain N1 exhibited good inhibitory activity against α-glucosidase. In vivo studies demonstrated that YJ7 supplementation prevented insulin resistance and inflammation in high-fat diet fed mice.

Summary: This study found that many symbiont fungi of soybean were present in sufu samples, while lactic acid bacteria were abundant in all samples. According to the principal coordinate analysis and hierarchical clustering analysis, the bacterial communities of sufu samples could generally be clustered into the LAB clade and Bacillus clade. Furthermore, dressing flavor of sufu samples during post-fermentation was not a major factor in shaping microbial communities.

Summary: This study evaluated the regulation of lauric acid (LA), glycerol monolaurate (GML), and lauric triglyceride (GTL) on metabolic health and gut microbiota in high fat diet-fed mice. The results showed that LA and its glycerides improved hyperlipidemia, while GML had a more pronounced effect on glucose metabolism and inflammation. Additionally, LA and its glycerides modulated gut microbiota with increased Bifidobacterium and decreased Desulfovibrio, which were closely related to metabolic improvements.

Summary: This study found that octyl and decyl glycerate (ODG), a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT), can alter the composition of the gut microbiota and have an impact on glucose and lipid metabolism and inflammation. The effects of ODG on lipid metabolism differ under different dietary patterns. Moreover, ODG supplementation also leads to changes in the gut microbiota, which may contribute to the alterations in metabolism and inflammation and may be influenced by dietary patterns.

Summary: Recent research suggests that the potential health risks of food additives on gut microbiota should be carefully considered. The widely used food preservative and emulsifier, glycerol monocaprylate (GMC), was found to significantly improve visceral fat accumulation and systemic inflammation in mice fed a high-fat diet. Additionally, GMC improved the composition and function of gut microbiota, leading to an increase in beneficial bacteria and the production of short chain fatty acids. Overall, the study revealed the potential of GMC to attenuate metabolic disorders and gut microbiota dysbiosis, emphasizing the importance of evaluating food additives based on their specific characteristics.

Summary: Glycerol monodecanoate (GMD) is a medium-chain monoacylglycerol with emulsifying and antibacterial properties. This study found that different doses of GMD had inconsistent effects on lipid metabolism by differentially altering the gut microbiota composition. However, all doses of GMD showed excellent effects on increasing insulin sensitivity and improving inflammation.
