Summary: This study examined the relationship between palliative care, patient-reported measures, and outcomes in hospitalized patients with cirrhosis. The results showed that patients who received palliative care had more severe disease and functional impairment, and palliative care may be associated with reduced utilization and increased completion of advanced directives.

Summary: This study analyzed referral forms of 300 patients and found that half of the referrals lacked sufficient information for proper evaluation, with most lacking information on performance status and prognosis. The study suggests that practical tips should be provided to general physicians to facilitate timely referrals and alleviate the burden on specialist palliative care.

Summary: Abnormalities in cognitive function are common among patients receiving hemodialysis (HD) and are associated with impairments in verbal processing, reasoning, and short-term memory. These impairments may be attributed to the HD treatment itself. Further research is needed to understand the development of cognitive impairment in this patient population and to test interventions aimed at preventing or slowing its progression.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the current situation of palliative care practices, competence, and difficulties among nurses and determine whether difficulties play a mediating role between practices and competence. The results showed that competence and difficulties were independent predictors of practices. Continuous efforts should be made to enhance nurses' practices, competence, and problem-solving abilities in palliative care. Further targeted education programs, especially in special symptom management and interagency and multidisciplinary communication, are recommended.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the patient-reported outcomes 2 years after burn injury and identify predictors that may influence these outcomes. The results showed that hand function, heat sensitivity, treatment regimens, and work were the dimensions with the lowest scores. Factors such as less postburn pruritus, better readiness for hospital discharge, smaller total body surface area, better social participation, white-collar jobs, older age, better sleep quality, and burns not caused by electricity were associated with better outcomes.

Summary: This multicenter observational study conducted in Japan aimed to explore the effectiveness of hospital-based palliative care teams (HPCTs) using patient-reported outcomes (PROs). The results showed that HPCTs effectively improved severe symptoms in palliative care patients, highlighting the difficulty of symptom relief and the need for improved care.

Summary: Depression and anxiety are common among patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) and have an impact on their quality of life. Higher Charlson Comorbidity Index, lower educational status, and usage of multiple oral medications may be associated with depression, while longer dialysis duration and multiple oral medications may be associated with anxiety in MHD patients.

Summary: This study used data from two multi-center randomized controlled trials and found that depression symptoms in patients can be categorized into four clusters, which have differential responses to repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatment. Further research aims to personalize rTMS protocols based on individual clinical presentations.

Summary: This study aimed to test the application of the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) sleep measures in pediatric atopic dermatitis (AD) and develop an algorithm for screening, assessing, and intervening sleep disturbance. The PROMIS sleep disturbance measure showed high reliability and correlation with disease severity. Thus, it is recommended to screen sleep disturbance using the POEM sleep question and further assess using the PROMIS sleep disturbance measure or objective sleep monitoring if needed.

Summary: This study evaluated the practice of palliative care in ICUs in Japan and found that its dissemination and integration into ICU care were insufficient. Palliative care screening and multidisciplinary conferences, development of standardized protocols for symptom management and withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment, as well as education in primary palliative care for all ICU physicians, are recommended to improve the quality of life for ICU patients.

Summary: This study analyzed clinical and demographic characteristics of 209,158 cancer deaths in Israel between 1998 and 2018. The proportion of out-of-hospital deaths increased annually, with older patients and those with solid malignancies more likely to die at home. The study highlights the importance of increasing access to end-of-life care and educating patients, families, and physicians about the benefits of palliative care.
