Summary: Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) are designed and synthesized using triphenylamine and 4-iodophenyldiphenylamine as precursors through a solvent-free reaction, displaying good oil-solubility and emission peak at 551 nm. These CDs can be used as the host material for monochromatic electroluminescent LEDs and as guest material in PVK for white light electroluminescent LEDs. They can also be mixed with oil soluble resin to assemble photoluminescent devices with high luminous efficiency of 17.1 lm.W-1.

Summary: Classification and sorting of cells using image-activated cell sorting (IACS) systems can provide valuable insights to biomedical sciences. However, the limited capabilities and complex implementation of deep learning-assisted IACS systems have hindered their widespread adoption in biomedical research. In this study, the authors present a label-free cell sorting solution based on real-time AI inferencing and fast training of a deep learning model. The system achieves high sorting purity with a short latency time, setting a new record for IACS with sorting by AI inference.

Summary: The size and emergence time of new permeability pathways (NPPs) in malaria parasites were verified. Nanomaterials with a particle size of about 50 nm showed higher efficiency in increasing the permeability of the host cell membrane during the maturation of NPPs. Nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) were found to be a novel nanomaterial that can specifically bind to malaria parasites and label live elder blood-stage P. falciparum through NPPs, indicating potential application in cell imaging. NPPs and nanomaterials like NCDs deserve more attention and exploration for malaria elimination and prevention.

Summary: Super bright fluorescent carbon dots (S-CDs) with photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) up to 100% were synthesized by the hydrothermal method using citric acid and ethylenediamine. These S-CDs outperformed all the fluorescent carbon dots reported so far. The study found that the carbonization/graphitization degree had little impact on the PLQY of S-CDs and that they did not possess graphene cores. The S-CDs exhibited excitation wavelength-independent emission behavior, suggesting an exclusive emission center/fluorophore that is not affected by quantum size effect. The study proposed that S-CDs are copolymers of CA and EDA and provided a possible reaction mechanism for their synthesis.

Summary: This study presents the design and synthesis of sulfated disaccharide inhibitors based on IdoA(2S)-GlcNS(6S), which showed potent inhibition of Sulf-2. The results suggest that IdoA(2S)-GlcNS(6S) is the shortest fragment size required for effective inhibition of Sulfs, and a trisulfated disaccharide is identified as the minimal fragment size of heparan sulfate for effective endosulfatase inhibition.

Summary: The self-adaptability of galvanostatic electrolysis was found to be helpful in a multistage chemo- and diastereoselective electrochemically promoted cyclodimerization of chalcones. Through a series of reductive events, densely functionalized cyclopentanes with five contiguous stereocenters were obtained (25 examples, yields up to 95%, dr values up to >20:1). Further experimental and electrochemical investigations indicated the crucial role of dynamic kinetic resolution of the aldol intermediate in the reaction mechanism.

Summary: In this study, the synthesis of functionalized benzo[a]phenazines and indazolo[2,3-a]quinolines was achieved through Rh(III)-catalyzed oxidative annulation of 2-arylquinoxalines and 2-aryl-2H-indazoles with allyl alcohols. The method showed a wide substrate scope, excellent functional group tolerance, good to high yields of annulated products, and the capability for scaled-up synthesis. A tentative mechanism of the annulation reaction was proposed based on a preliminary mechanistic investigation.
