The OPERA PREVENTION PROJECT is a comprehensive intervention for obesity that provides medical, athletic, cooking and psychological support for individuals with obesity, aiming to offer holistic health promotion services.
The OPERA (Obesity, Programmes of nutrition, Education, Research and Assessment of the best treatment) PREVENTION PROJECT was a campaign of prevention of obesity that was held on October 11th-13th 2019 in Naples. The project was based on the organization of a medical, athletic, tasting and psychological path with the following objectives: 1) Providing a free medical examination to subjects with obesity; 2) providing athletic advices to perform physical activity; 3) performing a show-cooking in order to teach subjects with obesity to cook healthy food; 4) providing a gustatory and olfactory sensitivity assessment; 4) providing a psychological examination through questionnaires to evaluate obstacles to start a weight loss programme and to psycologically support subjects with obesity on a virtual journey made through a reshaping software programme. In conclusion the OPERA PREVENTION PROJECT could represent a health promotion intervention reproducible in all the countries having high rates of subjects with obesity and overweight.

Coffee consumption, health benefits and side effects: a narrative review and update for dietitians and nutritionists

Luigi Barrea, Gabriella Pugliese, Evelyn Frias-Toral, Marwan El Ghoche, Bianca Castellucci, Sebastian Pablo Chapela, Maria de los Angeles Carignano, Daniela Laudisio, Silvia Savastano, Annamaria Colao, Giovanna Muscogiuri

Summary: This review provides an update on the benefits of coffee consumption on health outcomes, highlighting its potential for preventing inflammatory and oxidative stress-related diseases, reducing the incidence of certain cancers, and lowering the risk of all-cause mortality. However, more randomized controlled studies are needed to establish a causal link between coffee intake and health outcomes.

A practical nutritional guideline to manage neuroendocrine neoplasms through chronotype and sleep

Giovanna Muscogiuri, Isabella Zanata, Luigi Barrea, Alessia Cozzolino, Emanuele Filice, Erika Messina, Annamaria Colao, Antongiulio Faggiano

Summary: Chronotype is closely related to the development and progression of tumors, especially gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (GEP-NENs). Patients with an evening chronotype are more likely to have unhealthy lifestyle, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and sleep disturbances, which are associated with poor prognosis and tumor development. A tailored nutritional approach can help align the circadian rhythm and manage patients with NENs and sleep disturbances effectively.

Could very low-calorie ketogenic diets turn off low grade inflammation in obesity? Emerging evidence

Luigi Barrea, Massimiliano Caprio, Mikiko Watanabe, Giuseppe Cammarata, Alessandra Feraco, Giovanna Muscogiuri, Ludovica Verde, Annamaria Colao, Silvia Savastano

Summary: Obesity is an emerging non-communicable disease associated with chronic low-grade inflammation and oxidative stress. The ketogenic diet (KD), characterized by high fat intake, moderate to low protein consumption, and very low carbohydrate intake, has proven to be effective in weight loss and improving the inflammatory state and oxidative stress in individuals with obesity.

Evening chronotype is associated with hormonal and metabolic disorders in polycystic ovary syndrome

Luigi Barrea, Ludovica Verde, Claudia Vetrani, Annamaria Docimo, Giulia de Alteriis, Silvia Savastano, Annamaria Colao, Giovanna Muscogiuri

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of different chronotype categories in women with PCOS and their impact on hormonal and metabolic aspects. The findings showed a higher prevalence of evening chronotype in women with PCOS, which was associated with worse hormonal and metabolic profiles.

Vitamin D and chronotype: is there any relationship in individuals with obesity?

C. Vetrani, L. Barrea, L. Verde, A. Docimo, S. Aprano, S. Savastano, A. Colao, G. Muscogiuri

Summary: This study found that individuals with evening chronotype (EC) and obesity had higher BMI, waist circumference, and hip circumference compared to individuals with morning chronotype (MC) and obesity. EC individuals also had lower insulin sensitivity and 25-OH-D levels. Moreover, EC individuals had a higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and impaired fasting glucose. 25-OH-D was positively correlated with chronotype score and negatively correlated with BMI. These findings suggest that 25-OH-D and chronotype are independently associated with obesity.

Weight stigma speaks Italian, too

G. Muscogiuri, L. Barrea, L. Verde, A. Docimo, S. Savastano, D. Di Pauli, A. Colao

Summary: This study investigated the experiences, interpersonal sources, and context of weight stigma in adult subjects with obesity in Italy. The results showed that a significant number of participants have experienced weight stigma, primarily through verbal mistreatment from strangers in public settings. With the obesity epidemic growing rapidly, addressing weight stigma is important for obesity treatment in Italy.

The Antioxidant Potential of the Mediterranean Diet as a Predictor of Weight Loss after a Very Low-Calorie Ketogenic Diet (VLCKD) in Women with Overweight and Obesity

Ludovica Verde, Maria Dalamaga, Xavier Capo, Giuseppe Annunziata, Maria Hassapidou, Annamaria Docimo, Silvia Savastano, Annamaria Colao, Giovanna Muscogiuri, Luigi Barrea

Summary: High adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) leads to better results in the very low-calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD), possibly due to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of the MD, which create a metabolic state favorable for more effective ketosis.

How Fast Do Owls and Larks Eat?

Ludovica Verde, Annamaria Docimo, Giovanni Chirico, Silvia Savastano, Annamaria Colao, Luigi Barrea, Giovanna Muscogiuri

Summary: Chronotype reflects an individual's preference for sleeping, eating, and activity times. Different chronotype categories have been identified, with evening types more prone to unhealthy diets. This study investigated the eating speed of individuals with obesity in different chronotype categories and found that evening types had a faster eating speed, which may contribute to the risk of developing obesity-related cardiometabolic diseases.

Type 2 Diabetes: Also a Clock Matter?

Annamaria Docimo, Ludovica Verde, Luigi Barrea, Claudia Vetrani, Pasqualina Memoli, Giacomo Accardo, Caterina Colella, Gabriella Nosso, Marcello Orio, Andrea Renzullo, Silvia Savastano, Annamaria Colao, Giovanna Muscogiuri

Summary: This study investigated the association between chronotype and glycemic control, antidiabetic treatment, and risk of developing complications in patients with type 2 diabetes. The results showed that evening chronotype individuals had higher levels of glycated hemoglobin and fasting plasma glucose, as well as a higher prevalence of cardiovascular complications. Additionally, their glycemic control was poorer. Therefore, controlling chronotype may be important for patients with type 2 diabetes.

Summary: Sarcopenia, a prevalent comorbidity in critically ill patients, is associated with higher mortality, longer mechanical ventilation, and increased likelihood of being sent to a nursing home after ICU. Hormones and cytokines play a key role in muscle metabolism and protein synthesis and breakdown, influenced by feeding states and inflammation.
