Summary: This review evaluates the manufacturing processes of various types of controlled-release fertilizers (CRFs) based on lignin. The coated, chemically modified and chelated CRFs as well as lignin hydrogel-based CRFs are systematically summarized. The general mechanism for controlled release of lignin-based CRFs is discussed, and three common evaluation criteria of lignin-based CRFs efficiency are proposed. Overall, the use of lignin-based CRFs has the potential to greatly enhance resource efficiency and environmental protection.

Summary: An active flavonoid compound, rutin, was incorporated into a guanosine phenylborate hydrogel (GBR) for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The hydrogel exhibited good stability and injectability, and achieved dual-responsive release in an acidic pH and excessive ROS-containing medium. In vivo studies showed that the GBR hydrogel had higher therapeutic efficacy than free rutin and could suppress the expression of inflammatory cytokines.

Summary: This study investigates the release and transformation of inorganic and organic sodium during fast pyrolysis of sodium-loaded lignin using a wire-mesh reactor. The study finds that the release of sodium during lignin pyrolysis is relatively low, but significant transformation of inorganic and organic sodium occurs. The data generated in this study are important for understanding the catalytic mechanism of sodium in thermochemical processing of lignin for bioenergy and biofuel production.

Summary: The study successfully synthesized hydrogels using lignin, a non-valorized biopolymer, crosslinked with PEGDGE. The ratio of crosslinker used influenced the structural and chemical properties of the resulting hydrogels, with increased crosslinker amount leading to smaller pore size and higher swelling capacity. Paracetamol release test showed higher drug diffusion for hydrogels produced with a lignin:PEGDGE ratio of 1:1.

Summary: Crosslinking affects the mechanical behavior and tissue metabolism of collagen-based tissues. Aging and diabetes alter the crosslinking type and density, thus changing tissue properties. High-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking and advanced-glycation end-products result in uniform deformation under daily activity, while low-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking does not. High-connectivity model displays more sliding, while AGEs induce instability in structures near the binding sites.

Summary: The potential of multi-layer nanoemulsions for improving the cellular uptake, antioxidant activity, and in vitro bioaccessibility of alpha-tocopherol was examined. The results showed that the multi-layer nanoemulsions significantly enhanced the cellular uptake and antioxidant activity of alpha-tocopherol compared to free coumarin 6. Furthermore, the use of chitosan and dextran sulfate as wall materials in the multi-layer nanoemulsions led to even higher cellular uptake, in vitro bioaccessibility, and antioxidant activity of alpha-tocopherol.
