We present a neurophysiological hypothesis for the role of motor imagery (MI) and action observation (AO) training in the motor learning process. The effects of movement representation in the brain and those of the cortical-subcortical networks related to planning, executing, adjusting, and automating real movements share a similar neurophysiological activity. Coupled with the influence of certain variables related to the movement representation process, this neurophysiological activity is a key component of the present hypothesis. These variables can be classified into four domains: physical, cognitive-evaluative, motivational-emotional, and direct-modulation. The neurophysiological activity underlying the creation and consolidation of mnemonic representations of motor gestures as a prerequisite to motor learning might differ between AO and MI. Together with variations in cognitive loads, these differences might explain the differing results in motor learning. The mirror neuron system appears to function more efficiently through AO training than MI, and AO is less demanding in terms of cognitive load than MI. AO might be less susceptible to the influence of variables related to movement representation.

Effectiveness of Therapeutic Exercise Models on Cancer-Related Fatigue in Patients With Cancer Undergoing Chemotherapy: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-analysis

Aida Herranz-Gomez, Ferran Cuenca-Martinez, Luis Suso-Marti, Clovis Varangot-Reille, Miriam Prades-Monfort, Joaquin Calatayud, Jose Casana

Summary: This study assessed and compared the effectiveness of different exercise modalities in reducing cancer-related fatigue (CRF) in patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. The study also compared the exercise intensities for selected exercise types. The results showed that adding low-to moderate-intensity aerobic and/or resistance exercise can improve CRF in patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, compared to usual care or usual care with flexibility training.

Effects of Physiotherapy on Pain and Mouth Opening in Temporomandibular Disorders: An Umbrella and Mapping Systematic Review with Meta-Meta-Analysis

Manuel Arribas-Pascual, Sofia Hernandez-Hernandez, Christian Jimenez-Arranz, Monica Grande-Alonso, Santiago Angulo-Diaz-Parreno, Roy La Touche, Alba Paris-Alemany

Summary: The aim of this meta-meta-analysis was to assess the current evidence on the effect of physical therapy interventions on pain and functional variables in temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The results showed moderate effects for manual therapy and therapeutic exercise, and large effects for low-level laser therapy on improving pain intensity and maximum mouth opening in TMD patients. This study provides a synthesis of the available evidence for physical therapy interventions in patients with TMD, helping clinicians in selecting the optimal intervention.

Effects of Orthopedic Manual Therapy on Pain Sensitization in Patients With Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain

Oliver Martinez-Pozas, Eleuterio A. Sanchez-Romero, Hector Beltran-Alacreu, Alberto Arribas-Romano, Ferran Cuenca-Martinez, Jorge Hugo Villafane, Josue Fernandez-Carnero

Summary: This umbrella review with meta-meta-analysis found that orthopedic manual therapy had a small-moderate effect on mechanical hyperalgesia, with moderate-quality evidence and no heterogeneity. It also had a small effect on temporal summation, with moderate heterogeneity and low-quality evidence. Additionally, orthopedic manual therapy improved conditioned pain modulation with low-quality evidence. However, its effects were limited to immediate and short-term.

Safety, feasibility, and neuromuscular activity of acute low-load resistance exercise with or without blood flow restriction in patients with severe hemophilia

Joaquin Calatayud, Daniel C. Ogrezeanu, Juan J. Carrasco, Eduardo Martinez-Valdes, Sofia Perez-Alenda, Carlos Cruz-Montecinos, Lars L. Andersen, Per Aagaard, Luis Suso-Marti, Jose Casana

Summary: This study aimed to compare the safety, feasibility, and neuromuscular activity of low-load resistance exercise with/without blood flow restriction (BFR) in people with severe hemophilia. The results showed that BFR did not cause pain increases or adverse events, and there were no significant changes in neuromuscular activity. Therefore, it is safe and feasible for these patients to perform exercise with low load and appropriate BFR.

Role of Immersive Virtual Reality in Motor Behaviour Decision-Making in Chronic Pain Patients

Javier Guerra-Armas, Mar Flores-Cortes, Consolacion Pineda-Galan, Alejandro Luque-Suarez, Roy La Touche

Summary: Chronic pain affects a significant portion of the world's population and immersive virtual reality has been suggested as a potential therapy. However, there is a lack of understanding regarding the mechanisms behind VR's impact on pain and its clinical effectiveness.

Comparative analysis of the burnout syndrome index between contract and freelance physiotherapists: An observational study

Monica Grande-Alonso, Beatriz Castillo-Alcaniz, Pablo Paraiso-Iglesias, Ferran Cuenca-Martinez, Roy La Touche, Celia Vidal-Quevedo

Summary: There are significant differences in the burnout index between contract and freelance physiotherapists in the private sector in Madrid, Spain. Contract physiotherapists have a significantly higher burnout syndrome index compared to freelance physiotherapists. Other socio-occupational variables are also found to be related to the burnout syndrome index in both groups.

Determining the underlying role of corporate sustainability criteria in a ranking problem using UW-TOPSIS

A. Lopez-Garcia, V. Liern, B. Perez-Gladish

Summary: ESG criteria are important in investment decisions, but rating methodologies of ESG rating agencies have weaknesses in determining the relative importance of criteria. This paper proposes a MCDM approach called UW-TOPSIS that ranks firms based on their ESG global performance without the need for aggregation weights. However, it does not provide a global vector of weights for all alternatives, which is the objective of this paper.

Exercise-based interventions on sleep quality in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome: An umbrella and mapping review with meta-analysis

Ferran Cuenca-Martinez, Luis Suso-Marti, Josue Fernandez-Carnero, Vicente Munoz-Alarcos, Nuria Sempere-Rubio

Summary: The aim of this umbrella review was to assess the impact of exercise-based interventions on sleep quality in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome. Nine systematic reviews were included and meta-analysis was performed with a random-effects model. The results revealed a moderate statistically significant effect of exercise-based interventions in improving sleep quality.

Exercise-induced hypoalgesia with end-stage knee osteoarthritis during different blood flow restriction levels: Sham-controlled crossover study

Daniel C. Ogrezeanu, Laura Lopez-Bueno, Enrique Sanchis-Sanchez, Luis Suso-Marti, Ruben Lopez-Bueno, Rodrigo Nunez-Cortes, Carlos Cruz-Montecinos, Sofia Perez-Alenda, Jose Casana, Pedro Gargallo, Joaquin Calatayud

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of resistance training protocols with different occlusion levels of blood flow restriction (BFR) on exercise-induced hypoalgesia (EIH) in patients with end-stage knee osteoarthritis. The results showed that there was no difference in EIH after using different occlusion levels, and EIH was modulated by pain-related psychological constructs and self-perceived health status.

Summary: The objective of this study was to assess the ability to generate kinesthetic and visual motor imagery in participants with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), compared with asymptomatic participants, and to evaluate the influence of psychophysiological and functional variables in the motor imagery process. The results showed that CTS patients had more difficulties in generating visual motor images and needed more time to complete the mental tasks. There was a negative correlation between the ability to imagine and functional deficits for the kinesthetic subscale and temporal summation. A positive correlation was found between pain pressure threshold homolateral and time to generate the visual mental images.
