This study aimed to develop a chitosan-based hydrogel containing a mixture of flavonoids isolated from the leaves of Passiflora edulis Sims and to evaluate its stability, antioxidant properties, and wound healing effects on cutaneous lesions in diabetic rats. in vitro studies were carried out to evaluate the biocompatibility and flavonoid release from the chitosan hydrogel. in vivo wound healing studies were conducted on male Wistar rats, where the injured tissue was removed for histological analysis and determination of lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase activity, and glutathione peroxidase activity. From the histological analysis and macroscopic evaluation of the contraction of the wounds, it was observed that the formulation presented wound healing properties. In addition, treatment of the wound with the formulation stimulated the antioxidant defense system, suggesting a beneficial effect during the treatment of skin lesions in diabetic rats, especially in the first few days after wounding. According to these results, we can conclude that the chitosan hydrogel containing the flavonoid analyzed in this study has potential use as dressings in the treatment of wounds.

Novel Insights to Enhance Therapeutics With Acyclovir in the Management of Herpes Simplex Encephalitis

Maria Silvia Gurgel Assis, Taciane Cristina Fernandes Pedrosa, Fernanda Segurasse de Moraes, Tamires Guedes Caldeira, Gislaine Ribeiro Pereira, Jacqueline de Souza, Andre Luis Morais Ruela

Summary: Acyclovir, an antiviral drug, has low oral bioavailability and is often used to treat herpes simplex encephalitis, which has a poor prognosis with high mortality and permanent sequelae. Research has focused on improving drug bioavailability through novel drug delivery systems, such as nanotechnology-based systems, to enhance the effectiveness of acyclovir in treating the disease.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of flavonoids from Passiflora edulis leaves on diabetes-induced complications in rats. Analysis revealed the presence of various flavonoids, and treatment with the extract showed improvements in blood glucose, lipid levels, and platelet aggregation in diabetic rats. The findings suggest that C-glycosides in the extract may be beneficial for diabetes-related complications.

Summary: This study evaluated health-related quality of life, sleep quality, and sleepiness index in dentistry students at a university in Southeast Brazil. The results showed that dentistry students had poor indicators of quality of life, especially in the domains of body pain, vitality, general health perception, and limitations due to emotional and social aspects. Differences in sleep quality were also observed when related to demographic factors and academic performance.

Summary: This study evaluated two MTX-loaded liquid crystals (C1CH and C1CHCE) as topical treatments for psoriasis. The results showed that these liquid crystals exhibited significant immunomodulatory effects and induced skin remodeling. They also reduced inflammation and regulated the activity of cytokines and enzymes associated with psoriasis.

Combined effects of yacon flour and probiotic yogurt on the metabolic parameters and inflammatory and insulin signaling proteins in high-fat-diet-induced obese mice

Juciane de Abreu Ribeiro Pereira, Maria de Fatima Piccolo Barcelos, Eduardo Valerio Villas Boas, Roberta Hilsdorf Piccoli, Janina de Sales Guilarducci, Rafaela Correa Pereira, Jose Rodrigo Pauli, Eric Batista Ferreira, Michel Cardoso de Angelis-Pereira, Dennys Esper Cintra

Summary: This study found that the combination of yacon flour and yogurt with two strains of probiotics had positive effects on metabolic parameters, inflammatory and insulin signaling proteins in diet-induced obese mice. The combination resulted in decreased body weight, fasting glucose, and triacylglycerol levels, as well as reduced fat accumulation. Additionally, it decreased inflammatory markers and improved insulin signaling. These findings suggest that the use of prebiotics and probiotics in food can counteract obesity-associated inflammation and improve insulin resistance in the short term.

Battle of the cheeses: Instagram viatories switching

Eric B. Ferreira, Fernanda L. Valadares, Caros P. Silva

Summary: Dairy consumption in Brazil is influenced by factors such as family income, consumer profile, eating habits, and cultural beliefs. The most consumed cheeses in Brazil are Mucareala, Minas cheese, Requeijao, Prato, and Parmesao. However, the popularity of cheeses on Twitter does not necessarily reflect preference. Through a tournament bracket experiment carried out on Instagram, the preferred cheeses in Brazil were found to be Parmesao, Mucarela, Prato, and Coalho. Future research should focus on developing inferential statistics for tournament bracket experiments.
