Herein is presented the synthesis, characterization, electrochemical studies, DFT calculations and in vitro evaluation of amoebicidal activity in trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica of twenty ruthenium (II) mixed compounds with general formulae: (Ru(pdtoXE-E)]Cl-x (E-E bidentate, either neutral or negatively charged ligands). For compounds under study, O-O, N-O and N-N auxiliary donor ligands demonstrate to have a crucial impact on the electronic properties and that it is possible to modulate the antiparasitic activity. Among analyzed complexes, only four present a better performance compared to typically used metronidazole drug (IC50 < 6.80 mu mol/L) to treat amebiasis disease. For studied compounds, structure-activity relationships are strongly determined by either the redox potential (E-1/2) of Ru-II/Ru-III and calculated molar volume (V) of the complexes. Palladium Nanoparticles from Different Reducing Systems as Heck Catalysts

Rocio Redon, Tania Gonzalez-Garcia, Lorena Espinoza-Flores, Alfonsina Reyes-Mosso, Erika Martin, V. M. Ugalde-Saldivar

Summary: Palladium(0) nanoparticles were synthesized in colloidal suspension using different solvents and reducing methods, resulting in varying nanoparticle sizes that influenced catalysis. The best conversion in C-C Heck catalysis was observed under the minimum reaction conditions at 120 degrees C and 10 h, with N,N-dimethylformamide as solvent and no reducing agent.[dimethylformamide] This system produced the largest nanoparticles in dispersion, highlighting the importance of nanoparticle size in achieving high yields in C-C Heck catalysis.

Comparison of green bio-based cerium/alginate vs. copper/alginate beads: a study of vibrational and thermal properties using experimental and theoretical methods

Mohammed Elhoudi, Rachid Oukhrib, Christian A. Celaya, Daniel G. Araiza, Youness Abdellaoui, Issam Barra, Younes Brahmi, Hassan Bourzi, Miguel Reina, Abdallah Albourine, Hicham Abou Oualid

Summary: In this study, bio-based alginates containing metallic beads were synthesized via an alginate cross-linking method and their properties were studied using experimental techniques combined with theoretical simulations. The thermal properties analysis showed that alginate beads with Ce and Cu behaved differently as a function of temperature, and density functional theory calculations revealed that the reactivity of Ce beads was higher than that of Cu beads.

Impact of thickness of spin-coated P3HT thin films, over their optical and electronic properties

Fernando Landgrave-Barbosa, Andres F. Marmolejo-Valencia, Alejandro Baray-Calderon, Hailin Hu, Julio Cesar Aguilar-Cordero, Carlos Amador-Bedolla, Victor M. Ugalde-Saldivar

Summary: This study investigates the poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) thin films deposited on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass substrates using the spin-coating process. The results show abnormal spectra in films with thicknesses between 40 and 50 nm, possibly due to the formation of defects. Energy-resolved electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (ER-EIS) experiments reveal a thickness dependence of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level, while the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level remains constant.

Extracellular vesicles in COVID-19 prognosis, treatment, and vaccination: an update

Adrian Hernandez-Diazcouder, Cesar Diaz-Godinez, Julio Cesar Carrero

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has sparked a rapid race to develop control strategies, including diagnostic methods, therapies, and vaccines. However, existing vaccines do not provide sufficient protection against infection, highlighting the need for more effective vaccines to combat current and future variants. Additionally, the development of new diagnosis and treatment strategies is desirable to address the persistent presence of COVID-19. Recently, there has been interest in utilizing extracellular vesicles (EVs) as natural nanocarriers for delivering molecules and pathogen information. Studies have shown that SARS-CoV-2 infection induces the release of EVs, which can be used for disease prognosis and as carriers for active molecules and drugs. This review summarizes the progress made in using EVs for diagnosis, treatment, and vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 infection over the past three years.
