A novel bioformulation comprising of spray-dried enzymes and Saccharomyces cerevisiae biomass was evaluated in the field for its efficacy to improve broiler performance. A total of 360, one-day-old Cobb 500 male chicken were assigned randomly to four dietary treatments with 15 birds in each of six replicates the dietary treatments were basal diet (T1), basal diet + bioformulation (T2), basal diet + bacitracin (T3) and basal diet + bioformulation + bacitracin (T4). At the end of 35 days, body weight gain was found to be significantly higher for the bioformulation as compared to the other three groups. There was no significant difference in feed conversion ratio and mortality amongst the four groups. For the histological study, T2 was found to have the highest villus height/crypt depth ratio. Bioformulation supplementation decreased serum cholesterol and maintained normal liver and kidney function. The bioformulation was also found to promote the growth of beneficial fermentative bacteria (Butyricoccus, Lactobacillus, and Streptococcus) in the poultry ceca. Hence, bioformulation inclusion was shown to have a significant effect on broiler weight gain, serum biochemistry, and composition of the cecal microflora, and has the potential be developed as an alternative to antibiotic growth promoters.

Feasibility of the use of different types of enzymatically treated cellulosic fibres for polylactic acid (PLA) recycling

Fatima Ezzahra Bendourou, Gayatri Suresh, Mohamed Amine Laadila, Pratik Kumar, Tarek Rouissi, Gurpreet S. Dhillon, Khiari Zied, Satinder K. Brar, Rosa Galvez

Summary: This study investigated the potential use of cellulosic microfibers extracted from hemp fiber and pulp and paper solid waste as a reinforcing agent in novel bio composite materials produced from recycled Polylactic acid. Enzymatic treatment with laccase and cellulase improved the interfacial adhesion between rPLA matrix and fibers, leading to enhanced mechanical properties. The biocomposite obtained with rPLA with hemp fiber showed the most favorable values for Young's modulus, impact strength, and biodegradation rate.

Sustainable production and co-immobilization of cold-active enzymes from Pseudomonas sp. for BTEX biodegradation

Saba Miri, Jose Alberto Espejel Perez, Satinder Kaur Brar, Tarek Rouissi, Richard Martel

Summary: In this study, cold-active ToMO and C1,2D were produced using a newly isolated psychrophilic Pseudomonas S2TR-14 in a minimal salt medium supplemented with crustacean waste and different concentrations of used motor oil. Immobilized enzymes on micro/nano biochar-chitosan matrices showed high enzyme production and increased storage stability, leading to efficient degradation of BTEX in contaminated groundwater and soil. Integrated use of microbiochar and nanobiochar with chitosan for co-immobilization of ToMO and C1,2D can be a potential way to remove petroleum hydrocarbons with higher efficiency from contaminated sites.

Summary: The study investigated the co-metabolic biodegradation of p-xylene by Pseudomonas putida in the presence of Benzene, Toluene, and Ethylbenzene. The GMDH model was proposed to predict the transformation of non-growth substrates in the presence of multiple growth substrates, showing potential for accurately predicting the degradation process in co-metabolic systems.

Critical insights into psychrophilic anaerobic digestion: Novel strategies for improving biogas production

Bikash R. Tiwari, Tarek Rouissi, Satinder Kaur Brar, Rao Y. Surampalli

Summary: Anaerobic digestion (AD) at low temperatures has attracted attention for its ability to overcome the adverse effects of cold on microbial biology and wastewater properties. Reduction in organic loading rate and modification in reactor design can improve methane production. Novel strategies such as DIET and co-digestion show promising prospects for future development in psychrophilic AD.

Fumaric acid production using alternate fermentation mode by immobilized Rhizopus oryzae-a greener production strategy

Joseph Sebastian, Karen Villegas Dominguez, Satinder Kaur Brar, Tarek Rouissi

Summary: The research showed that immobilization of Rhizopus using different materials can significantly enhance fumaric acid production. Polystyrene foam was identified as the most suitable support material for this purpose, leading to a considerable increase in the yield of fumaric acid. Using apple pomace ultrafiltration sludge as sole feedstock, in combination with intermittent feeding, can further increase the production of fumaric acid.
