The present study evaluated the nutritional composition of under-exploited edible seaweeds and its comparison with recommended dietary allowances (RDA) of pregnant women. Some under-exploited seaweeds were identified such as Acanthophora spicifera, Gracilaria edulis, Padina gymnospora, Ulva fasciata and Enteromorpha flexuosa were not utilized directly as a food, thus evaluated their wholesome nutrients for food application. Results showed that micronutrients were found to be high in selected seaweeds such as iron in the range of 14.8-72 mg/100 g, iodine 38.8-72.2 mg/100 g, and calcium 410-870 mg/100 g. The essential aminoacids were between 189.2 and 306 mg/g, essential fatty acid like arachidonic acid was 0.80% and 0.59% of linoleic acid, monounsaturated fatty acid were 3.05-14.08% in U. fasiciata. Heavy metals were within the tolerable limit, mercury was found 0.030 ppm A. spicifera and not detected in other species, arsenic 0.012-0.076 ppm, cadmium content ranges between 0.012 and 0.081 ppm in all species. These nutrients meet more than 70% of macro and micronutrients in precise combination of RDA suggested for pregnant women. Therefore, seaweed would be better alternative food source to meet food security challenges. (C) 2019 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. on behalf of King Saud University.

Valorization of brewer's spent grain for sustainable food packaging

Zeinab Qazanfarzadeh, Abirami Ramu Ganesan, Loredana Mariniello, Lorenza Conterno, Vignesh Kumaravel

Summary: The accumulation of petroleum-based plastics necessitates the search for biodegradable packaging materials. Brewer's spent grain, a by-product of beer production in Europe, has potential value in the food packaging sector due to its high biomaterial content and large annual generation. This study comprehensively examines the extraction of high-value products from brewer's spent grain using various biorefinery techniques and evaluates the potential of biodegradable films and coatings derived from brewer's spent grain for food packaging. Techno-economic factors, environmental impacts, and challenges are also assessed. The best biorefinery system requires a balance between extraction efficiency, energy consumption, environmental impact, upscaling feasibility, and operating cost. Cellulose, lignin, xylitol, and arabinoxylan are recommended as promising components for food packaging applications.

Kannan Mohan, Palanivel Sathishkumar, Durairaj Karthick Rajan, Jayakumar Rajarajeswaran, Abirami Ramu Ganesan

Summary: Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) is a fast-growing and promising insect species that can achieve high-fat content through organic dietary supplements and environmental conditions. The fatty acids in their body can be converted into biodiesel with high efficiency, resulting in reduced energy input and carbon emissions. This review focuses on evaluating the optimal dietary source and growth conditions to produce fatty acid-rich larvae from agro food waste, and discusses the optimization and refining of lipids using novel techniques.

Recent trends on chitosan based hybrid materials for wastewater treatment: A review

Kannan Mohan, Durairaj Karthick Rajan, Jayakumar Rajarajeswaran, Dharmaraj Divya, Abirami Ramu Ganesan

Summary: Emerging pollutants, corrosive chemicals and dyes released from industries severely contaminate landfills, environment, and water reservoirs. The improper release of wastewater is linked to mass mortalities of aquatic animals and species depletion. The release of pollutants in water bodies poses a threatening alarm to human society and the environment. Chitosan-based hybrid materials (nanocomposites, hydrogels, membranes, films, sponges, nanoparticles, microspheres, and flakes) could serve as novel alternative materials to replace chemical-based adsorbents in removing pollutants from municipal wastewater. This review aims to summarize the advantages of using chitosan-based hybrid materials in wastewater treatment and highlight their role in removing various pollutants and dyes from municipal wastewater.

Mohd Javed Akhtar, Maqusood Ahamed, Hisham Alhadlaq

Summary: This study compares the effects of two types of cobalt-based nanoparticles on lung cells and finds that cobalt nanoparticles are more toxic to cells than cobalt-iron oxide nanoparticles, possibly due to the higher release of Co2+ ions by cobalt nanoparticles. Additionally, the study suggests that CalceinAM alone is insufficient to assess the toxicity of cobalt-based nanoparticles, and other methods should be used for further confirmation.

The mathematical structure for computing the impacts of fluid viscoelasticity on the flow is provided, and the dimensionless variables influencing the interaction between the fluid and structure are identified.
