Introduction: The purpose of this review is to discuss Microbiota Transplant Therapy (MTT), a type of intensive intestinal microbiota transplantation (IMT), for people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and chronic gastrointestinal disorders (constipation and/or diarrhea). Areas covered: This paper briefly reviews IMT, gastrointestinal symptoms and gastrointestinal bacteria in children with ASD, and results and lessons learned from intensive MTT for autism. Expert opinion: An open-label study and a two-year follow-up suggest that MTT is relatively safe and effective in significantly reducing gastrointestinal disorders and autism symptoms, changing the gut microbiome structure, and increasing gut microbial diversity. Further research with larger, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies is warranted.

Bioaugmentation with As-transforming bacteria improves arsenic availability and uptake by the hyperaccumulator plant Pteris vittata (L).

Reda A. Abou-Shanab, Cara M. Santelli, Michael J. Sadowsky

Summary: The study showed that certain soil bacteria can enhance the availability of arsenic in soil, thus increasing arsenic uptake by Pteris vittata plants. Specific bacterial strains significantly improved arsenic uptake by P. vittata, leading to higher bioconcentration factors and potential use in large-scale soil remediation.

Erosion and deposition divergently affect the structure of soil bacterial communities and functionality

Weibo Kong, Fuyuan Su, Qian Zhang, Satoshi Ishii, Michael J. Sadowsky, Samiran Banerjee, Mingan Shao, Liping Qiu, Xiaorong Wei

Summary: This study in the Loess Plateau of China reveals that soil erosion and deposition have significant impacts on bacterial communities and multifunctionality. Erosion reduces bacterial richness and multifunctionality, but deposition can alleviate these negative effects. The study suggests that sustainable soil management and restoration of degraded lands can benefit from understanding the interactions between erosion, deposition, bacterial communities, and soil multifunctionality.

Effectiveness of ivermectin-based multidrug therapy in severely hypoxic, ambulatory COVID-19 patients

Sabine Hazan, Sonya Dave, Anoja W. Gunaratne, Sibasish Dolai, Robert L. Clancy, Peter A. McCullough, Thomas J. Borody

Summary: This study examined the effectiveness of a combination therapy consisting of ivermectin, doxycycline, zinc, and vitamins D and C in treating COVID-19. The results showed that all patients experienced symptom relief and improved oxygen saturation. The study suggests that this treatment approach is safe and effective for outpatient cases with moderate to severe symptoms.

Impacts of algal organic matter and humic substances on microcystin-LR removal and their biotransformation during the biodegradation process

Parul Baranwal, Dae-Wook Kang, Youngwoo Seo

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of natural organic matter (NOM) on the biodegradation of MC-LR and explored the changes in NOM composition. The results demonstrated that the presence of algal organic matter (AOM) and humic substances (HS) significantly decreased the biodegradation rate of MC-LR. Additionally, fractionation and fluorescence spectroscopy analyses revealed the sequential utilization of different NOM components by bacteria and the metabolic processes involved.

Compilation of longitudinal gut microbiome, serum metabolome, and clinical data in acute myeloid leukemia

Armin Rashidi, Maryam Ebadi, Tauseef Ur Rehman, Heba Elhusseini, Hossam Halaweish, Thomas Kaiser, Shernan G. Holtan, Alexander Khoruts, Daniel J. Weisdorf, Christopher Staley

Summary: Induction chemotherapy in patients with acute myeloid leukemia significantly impacts the gut microbiota, and studying this can provide new insights into the microbiota-host relationship. Combining this with circulating metabolome analysis can shed light on the microbial contribution to metabolism. Detailed sample information and links to serum metabolomics and clinical metadata are provided for comprehensive multi-omics analysis.

SARS-CoV-2 Monitoring in Wastewater Reveals Novel Variants and Biomarkers of Infection

Jenna McGowan, Monica Borucki, Hicham Omairi, Merina Varghese, Shahnaz Vellani, Sukanya Chakravarty, Shumin Fan, Srestha Chattopadhyay, Mashuk Siddiquee, James B. Thissen, Nisha Mulakken, Joseph Moon, Jeffrey Kimbrel, Amit K. Tiwari, Roger Travis Taylor, Dae-Wook Kang, Crystal Jaing, Ritu Chakravarti, Saurabh Chattopadhyay

Summary: Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is an effective tool for predicting the community spread of infectious diseases, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through analyzing the correlation between viral gene copies and clinical cases, as well as sequencing RNA from wastewater to identify viral mutants, WBE can be used to predict the spread of COVID-19 and the emergence of new variants of concern. Furthermore, significant changes in the microbial community of wastewater, particularly in bacterial genera belonging to the families of Lachnospiraceae and Actinomycetaceae, show a strong correlation with the presence of SARS-CoV-2. These microbial biomarkers could serve as prediction tools for future infectious disease surveillance and outbreak responses.

Oral and gut microbiome alterations in heart failure: Epidemiology, pathogenesis and response to advanced heart failure therapies

Melana Yuzefpolskaya, Bruno Bohn, Annamaria Ladanyi, Alexander Khoruts, Paolo C. Colombo, Ryan T. Demmer

Summary: Despite advances in therapies, heart failure (HF) remains a progressive disease associated with significant death and disability. Cardiac replacement therapies with LVAD and HT are the only treatment options for advanced HF, but complications limit their effectiveness. Systemic inflammation plays a role in HF pathophysiology, but targeting inflammation directly has not been successful.

Summary: This study introduces a new whole room indirect calorimeter methodology for quantifying methane volume released from the human body, concurrently with energy expenditure and substrate utilization assessment. The system combines an established calorimeter with off-axis integrated-cavity output spectroscopy to measure methane concentration. The method allows for the measurement of 24-hour methane volume and its proportion to human energy intake.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of bioaugmentation and biostimulation on the microbiomes and nitrate removal rates of woodchip bioreactors (WBRs). The results showed that introducing denitrifying bacteria and adding acetate can enhance the nitrate removal efficiency of WBRs. Additionally, the study found that denitrifiers are unevenly distributed in WBRs.
