Summary: Nanocrystalline cobalt monoboride was synthesized by thermal decomposition of precursors [Co(DMF)(6)][An], where [An] = [B12H12](2-) (1), [trans-B20H18](2-) (2) or [B10Cl10](2-) (3) in an argon atmosphere. Three new salt-like compounds 1-3 were obtained by the reaction of Co(NO3)(2) with (Et3NH)(2)[An]. Characterization of the annealed products 1a-3a revealed the presence of BN and CoB for 1a, a higher CoB:BN ratio for 2a with decreased crystallinity, and only CoB for 3a. TEM analysis showed that 1a and 2a had small particle sizes (10-15 nm) and a normal size distribution, while 3a had large particles (200-350 nm) with a broad distribution.

Summary: In this study, the first isolable, crystalline borepin radical and anion complexes were reported. These complexes were synthesized through the reduction of carbon-carbon double bonds in cyclic(alkyl)(amino) carbene-dibenzo[b,d]borepin precursors using potassium graphite. The resulting compounds have potential applications in the development of new materials and optoelectronics.

Summary: The instability of the anionic redox reaction and the resulting irreversible oxygen release are identified as the core causes of the deterioration in cycling stability of Li-rich cathode materials (LRM). To mitigate these issues, a uniform surface boron cobalt complexes (BCCs) coating was successfully constructed on cobalt-free LRM. The BCCs coating effectively reduced interface side reactions, Mn dissolution, and irreversible gas release, resulting in enhanced structural stability. The modified LRM cathode exhibited superior capacity retention (92.7%) compared to the pristine LRM cathode (78.1%) after 300 cycles at 1 C, highlighting the potential of this modification strategy for commercial application of LRM.

Summary: Electrochemical dinitrogen reduction (NRR) has the potential to replace the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process for clean ammonia (NH3) production. However, the selectivity between NRR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a major challenge. This study used scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) to investigate the production of NH4+ and its competition with HER during electrochemical N-2 reduction. The findings provide valuable information on the competition between NRR and HER with high spatial resolution and accuracy.

Summary: Regioselective, five-fold B-H activation of the monocarborane cluster [CB11H12](-) at the positions B7-11 has been achieved. This selective substitution method involves directing group assistance by the carboxylic acid functionality and palladium catalysis using iodoarene coupling partners. The obtained penta-arylated products exhibit good yields and functional group tolerance, and X-ray crystal structures confirm the selective substitution of the lower belt of the monocarborane cage.

Summary: In a heat-resistant steel with 150 ppm B, the evolution of W-rich M3B2 type borides during aging at temperatures of 650, 700, 750 degrees C was studied. Results showed that the borides could dissolve during prolonged isothermal exposure, postponing the nucleation and growth of Laves phase and preventing B from segregating in carbides. The temporary existence of W-rich M3B2 type borides at high temperatures postpones phase transformation and segregation.

Summary: The complexation of iron(II), cobalt(II), and nickel(II) with 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) and 2,2'-bipyridyl (Bipy) in the presence of the [B20H18](2-) anion was studied. Tris-chelate metal complexes [ML3][B20H18] were synthesized and characterized. The composition of the complexes could not be changed by varying the ratio of reagents, except for cobalt(II) and Phen, which formed a binuclear complex. The structures of the complexes were determined by X-ray diffraction.

Summary: In this study, the complexation of zinc(II) and cadmium(II) with the dodecahydrido-closo-dodecaborate anion [B12H12](2-) in the presence of benzimidazole ligands L-1 and L-2 was investigated. The resulting compounds were characterized and the influence of the metal nature on their composition and structure was determined. Tris-chelate zinc(II) complexes with the [B12H12](2-) anion were isolated, while mixed-ligand complexes with 3c2e (CdHB) bonds between the [B12H12](2-) anion and the cadmium atom were obtained for the first time.

Summary: The first aerogel-based single-ion magnets were synthesized by immobilizing cobalt(II) ions in a silica aerogel matrix. The lyogels were synthesized by co-hydrolyzing methyl-trimethoxysilane and N-3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl ethylenediamine, and then the cobalt(II) ions were bound to the silica matrix through the immobilized ethylenediamine groups. The cobalt(II)-modified silica aerogels exhibited slow magnetic relaxation in a nonzero field.

Summary: In this study, mixed-ligand lead(II) complexes with 2,2'-bipyridyl and [B10H9OH](2-) or monosubstituted hydroxy-substituted closo-decaborate anions with a pendant hydroxy group were synthesized and characterized by IR and multinuclear NMR spectroscopies. The structures of a binuclear complex [Pb(bipy)(2)[B10H9OH]](2)·CH3CN, a mononuclear complex [Pb(bipy)(2)[B10H9O(CH2)2O(CH2)2OH]]·0.5bipy·CH3CN, and a polymeric complex [Pb(bipy)[B10H9O(CH2)5O(CH2)2OH]](n) were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The coordination polyhedra of lead(II) in these compounds are formed by N atoms from bipy molecules, O atoms of the substituents, and BH groups of the boron cage.

Summary: Reactions of [B11H11]2- with copper(I) and silver(I) complexes [(Ph3P)3MX] (M = Cu, X = Cl; M = Ag, X = NO3) led to the formation of metallaboranes (Bu4N)3[commo-M(B11H11)2] instead of M-H-B complexes. The crystal structure of (Bu4N)3[Ag(B11H11)2] was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Hirschfeld surface analysis and DFT calculations were conducted for both metallaboranes [M (B11H11)2]3- (M = Cu, Ag).

Summary: A mononuclear iron mononitrosyl complex with two 8-mercaptoquinolate ligands was synthesized by two different methods. The complex can donate NO when dissolved in DMSO and diluted with water. Various spectroscopic techniques were used to study the complex, revealing strong covalent bonding in the Fe(II)-NO· fragment and antiferromagnetic coupling, resulting in a S = 1/2 state for the {FeNO}7-unit. Magnetic property analysis showed that the complex tends to dimerize through intermolecular ferromagnetic exchange coupling via π-stacking in the crystal structure at low temperatures.
