The Industry 4.0 is important for China to achieve industrial upgrading and promoting the quality of manufacturing development. This paper investigates the driving force of the Industry 4.0 in China's manufacture industry, and evaluates the impact of Industry 4.0 on firm's performance. First, a textual mining is conducted to identify 460 companies that are implementing Industry 4.0 strategy, and then a Probit model is adopted to examine the driving forces of Industry 4.0. Through the propensity scores matching difference-in-difference method, the impacts of Industry 4.0 on firm's performance are evaluated. The results reveal that private and large companies show a higher motivation to promote the Industry 4.0 strategy, and government subsidies have no significant impact on firm's Industry 4.0 decision. The implementation of Industry 4.0 can significant improves firm's financial performance, innovation activities and stock returns, but has no significant impact on supply chain efficiency. In addition, the adoption of Industry 4.0 has positive impact on firm's information transparency grade.

Investigating the Determinants of the Growth of the New Energy Industry: Using Quantile Regression Approach

Bin Xu, Boqiang Lin

Summary: This study applies quantile regression to investigate the new energy industry in China. The results show that economic growth has the greatest impact on the new energy industry in provinces with developed economies and a higher demand for ecological environment and new energy resources. Foreign energy dependence has minimal impact on provinces with minimal oil importation. Technological progress has the lowest contribution to provinces with weaker R&D capabilities. The impact of energy consumption structure decreases from provinces with lower economic strength to provinces with higher economic strength. The agricultural sector promotes the new energy industry in most provinces.

Progress of increasing-block electricity pricing policy implementation in China?s first-tier cities and the impact of resident policy perception

Boqiang Lin, Tianxu Lan

Summary: Based on the theory of planned behavior and the policy acceptance model, this study incorporated policy perception into a theoretical model of residential electricity-saving behavior. The factors influencing residential electricity-saving feedback after the implementation of the increasing-block electricity pricing policy were investigated through a questionnaire survey conducted on 3108 residents in four typical first-tier cities in China. The results revealed that perceived economic usefulness, perceived environmental usefulness, and perceived ease of use of the policy significantly and positively influenced residents' cutting and investing in electricity-saving feedback. Gender and city heterogeneity were also examined. Additionally, a comparison of questionnaire data from 2016 and 2022 showed an increase in residents' concerns about electricity information, attitudes towards electricity saving, and policy cognition in recent years. Policy recommendations were proposed to enhance residents' policy perception and promote energy-saving feedback under the increasing-block electricity pricing policy.

Invisible among the vulnerable: a nuanced perspective of energy poverty at the intersection of gender and disability in South Africa

Michael Adu Okyere, Boqiang Lin

Summary: This study fills an important gap in the existing literature by investigating the complex relationship between gender, disability, and energy poverty. Using an intersectionality framework, the study examines how these identities interact with other variables to shape the experience of energy deprivation. The analysis of the General Household Survey in South Africa reveals that the intersection between females and disability significantly increases the risk of energy poverty, and that life dissatisfaction and food insecurity are critical mechanisms exacerbating this intersection. The study highlights the importance of tailored interventions, such as targeted energy subsidy schemes, for females with disabilities.
