Aim: Investigation of the lateral flagellar (Laf) genes transcription by the quorum sensing (QS) regulators AphA and OpaR in Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Materials & methods: Regulation mechanisms were assessed by combined utilization of swarming motility assay, qPCR, LacZ fusion, EMSA and DNase I footprinting. Results: AphA and OpaR oppositely regulate swarming motility and Laf genes. At high cell density, OpaR bound to the regulatory regions of motY-lafK-fliEFGHIJ, fliMNPQR-flhBA, fliDSTKLA-motAB and lafA to repress their transcription. At low cell density, AphA indirectly activated their transcription. Conclusion: OpaR repression of swarming motility was via its direct repression of Laf genes, while AphA exerted its regulatory effect on swarming motility through unknown regulator(s).

Ligand Modulation of the Structures and Magnetic Relaxation in Triangular Dy3 Complexes Based on a Tricompartmental Scaffold

Jianfeng Wu, Fan Zhang, Guo-Lu Wang, Serhiy Demeshko, Sebastian Dechert, Yi-Quan Zhang, Franc Meyer

Summary: Using a novel tricompartmental hydrazone ligand, a set of trinuclear Dy-3 complexes with different anions (Cl-, Br-, or ClO4-) and co-ligands were isolated and characterized. The magnetic properties of these complexes vary due to structural disorder and different relaxation processes, with Dy-3 center dot ClO4 showing the most robust magnetic behavior. The magneto-structural relationships were analyzed and rationalized using CASSCF/RASSI-SO calculations.

Design of Heterometallic {LnIII-MV} (Ln = Dy, Er; M = W, Mo) Molecular Nanomagnets: Protonation Induced Structural Diversification

Pan-Dong Mao, Nian-Tao Yao, Hui-Ying Sun, Fei-Fei Yan, Yi-Quan Zhang, Yin-Shan Meng, Tao Liu

Summary: The construction of lanthanide-based molecular magnets using self-assembly strategy is a hot research topic. In this work, the self-assembly reaction of trivalent lanthanide ions, multidentate ligands, and octacyanometallate building blocks was reported. Different types of cyanobridged complexes were obtained and characterized. The magnetic analysis showed that some of these complexes exhibit field-induced single-molecule magnet behaviors.

Modulating the structural topologies from star-shape to cross-shape for Co-Dy heterometallic complexes with slow magnetic relaxation behavior

Hui-Sheng Wang, Chun-Fang Yu, Si-Qi Ye, Yong Chen, Xueru Liu, Yanfang Wu, Pengfei Zhou, Yi-Quan Zhang

Summary: Two novel Co-Dy heterometallic complexes were synthesized using H3L, dpk, and Dy(NO3)3·5H2O reacting with Co(NO3)2·6H2O or anhydrous Co(CH3CO2)2 in CH3OH and CH3CN solutions. Structural analysis revealed that 1 formed a star-like topology with two Dy-III and two Co-III ions, while 2 formed a cross-shaped topology with a linear CoII2Dy(III) paramagnetic unit.

Detailed magnetic properties and theoretical calculation in ferromagnetic coupling DyIII-MII 3d-4f complexes based on a 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane derivative

Yu Jing, Jia Wang, Ming Kong, Gao-Ji Wang, Yi-Quan Zhang, You Song

Summary: Four 3d-4f complexes based on Dy were synthesized, and their magnetic properties were studied. The results showed that all complexes except 4 exhibited single-molecule magnet behavior. The study demonstrated the importance of the coexistence of magnetic anisotropy of lanthanide ions and ferromagnetic coupling between lanthanide and transition metal ions in the design of 3d-4f single-molecule magnets.

Effect of Subtle Changes on the Slow Relaxation Behavior of Co(II) Ions Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Long-He Li, Yan Peng, Shiyong Zhang, Tongtong Xiao, You Song, Heng-Yun Ye, Jinlei Zhang, Yi-Quan Zhang, Zhenxing Wang, Zhao-Bo Hu

Summary: Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have been synthesized and their magnetic properties studied. The Co(II)-based MOF compound [Co-(dps)2Cl2]n (1) was found to have a two-dimensional (2D) layered structure. The magnetic studies showed that compound 1 exhibited easy-plane anisotropy with positive D value and was a field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) governed by single Co(II) ion. The effects of coordinate halogens and packing pattern on the magnetic relaxation were also investigated.

Transcriptional Regulation of hmsB, A Temperature-Dependent Small RNA, by RovM in Yersinia pestis Biovar Microtus

Lei Liu, Wanbing Liu, Yingyu He, Yan Liu, Haisheng Wu, Yiquan Zhang, Qinwen Zhang

Summary: It was found in this study that the global regulator RovM could activate the expression of the hmsB gene, promoting biofilm formation in Yersinia pestis. However, RovM did not bind directly to the upstream DNA region of hmsB, suggesting an indirect regulatory mechanism. These results contribute to the understanding of regulatory circuits controlling gene expression in Y. pestis.

Understanding the Magnetic Relaxation Mechanism in Mixed-Valence Dilanthanide Complexes with Metal-Metal Bonding: A Theoretical Investigation

Tao Shang, Fang Lu, Jin Tao, Yi-Quan Zhang

Summary: Theoretical investigations on mixed-valence dilan-thanide complexes (CpiPr5)2Ln2I3 (Ln = Tb, Dy, and Ho) suggest that the total spin of the 4f shell couples preferentially to the sigma electron spin and then to the orbital angular momentum, enhancing the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) strength. Moreover, the concentration of negative charges in the axial direction leads to a large crystal-field (CF) splitting. Both strong SOC and large CF splitting contribute to the largest energy barrier Ueff observed in such complexes so far. Additionally, the introduction of sigma electrons effectively suppresses the quantum tunneling of magnetization in the ground spin-orbit state, and the Ueff of (CpiPr5)2Ln2I3 is expected to result from the contribution of both Ln ions under strong Ln-sigma exchange coupling.

QsvR and OpaR coordinately repress biofilm formation by Vibrio parahaemolyticus

Miaomiao Zhang, Xingfan Xue, Xue Li, Qimin Wu, Tingting Zhang, Wenhui Yang, Lingfei Hu, Dongsheng Zhou, Renfei Lu, Yiquan Zhang

Summary: Mature biofilm formation by Vibrio parahaemolyticus requires the coordination of multiple factors including exopolysaccharide, type IV pili, and capsular polysaccharide. This coordination is regulated by control pathways such as quorum sensing and c-di-GMP. The QsvR regulator integrates into the quorum sensing regulatory cascade and works together with OpaR to control biofilm formation by regulating the transcription of multiple biofilm-related genes and c-di-GMP metabolism.
