It is crucial for the wine industry to have methods like electronic nose systems (E-Noses) for real-time monitoring thresholds of acetic acid in wines, preventing its spoilage or determining its quality. In this paper, we prove that the portable and compact self-developed E-Nose, based on thin film semiconductor (SnO2) sensors and trained with an approach that uses deep Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) neural network, can perform early detection of wine spoilage thresholds in routine tasks of wine quality control. To obtain rapid and online detection, we propose a method of rising-window focused on raw data processing to find an early portion of the sensor signals with the best recognition performance. Our approach was compared with the conventional approach employed in E-Noses for gas recognition that involves feature extraction and selection techniques for preprocessing data, succeeded by a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. The results evidence that is possible to classify three wine spoilage levels in 2.7 s after the gas injection point, implying in a methodology 63 times faster than the results obtained with the conventional approach in our experimental setup.

Classical Artificial Neural Network Training Using Quantum Walks as a Search Procedure

Luciano S. de Souza, Jonathan H. A. de Carvalho, Tiago A. E. Ferreira

Summary: This article proposes a computational procedure that applies a quantum algorithm to train classical artificial neural networks. By using quantum walk as a search algorithm in a complete graph, the procedure can find all synaptic weights of the neural network. With the advantages of knowing the required number of iterations in advance and avoiding getting stuck in local minimums, this method offers an alternative to the backpropagation algorithm.

Summary: This paper introduces a new class of trigonometric distributions based on the secant function, which modifies the tails and overall skewness features of well-known distributions. The unique four-parameter continuous distribution of this class, defined with the Kumaraswamy-Weibull distribution as the baseline, is emphasized. The model parameters are estimated using the maximum likelihood method. A numerical simulation study shows that the proposed secant Kumaraswamy-Weibull model outperforms important competitors.

A simple light-trapping device from a hyperbolic metamaterial on a catenoid

Summary: By utilizing both ray and wave optics, it has been demonstrated that a straightforward device composed of a hyperbolic metamaterial film on a catenoid surface is capable of light trapping. The study of light trajectories reveals a tendency for the rays to wrap and become trapped around the device's neck. The wave equation exhibits an effective attractive potential, and the solutions confirm the bound states suggested by the trajectories.

Configurable sublinear circuits for quantum state preparation

Israel F. Araujo, Daniel K. Park, Teresa B. Ludermir, Wilson R. Oliveira, Francesco Petruccione, Adenilton J. da Silva

Summary: The theory of quantum algorithms promises the benefits of using the laws of quantum mechanics to solve computational problems. However, a prerequisite for applying these algorithms is loading classical data onto a quantum state. Existing methods either require linear growth in quantum circuit depth or width, nullifying the advantage of representing exponentially many classical data in a quantum state. This paper presents a configurable bidirectional procedure that balances the trade-off between quantum circuit width and depth, allowing for sublinear growth when encoding N-dimensional classical data.

Summary: Initializing classical data in a quantum device is a crucial step in many quantum algorithms. This paper proposes a quantum state preparation algorithm called CVO-QRAM, whose computational cost depends on the number of nonzero probability amplitudes and the maximum number of bits with a value of 1 in one of the patterns to be stored. This algorithm can be an alternative for creating sparse states in future noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices.
