Summary: The detection and understanding of emerging contaminants (ECs) pose new challenges to water pollution control. Triclosan (TCS), an emerging contaminant widely found in the environment, is a commonly used antibacterial agent. Microdialysis (MD), a sampling technique, combined with UHPLC-QTOF/MS analysis, was used to identify endogenous metabolites as biomarkers of TCS exposure in living crucian carp. The quantification of these biomarkers using UHPLC-MS/MS provided continuous monitoring of the effect of TCS on endogenous metabolites, contributing to a better understanding of its toxicological effect.

Summary: This study discovered that taxifolin is able to effectively trap methylglyoxal (MGO), an important precursor of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), by forming MGO adducts in vitro and in vivo. Quantification studies showed that taxifolin and its metabolites can dose-dependently trap MGO. Similar results were observed in diabetic mice.

Summary: We evaluated the antioxidant, anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, and anti-glycation activities of broccoli, red cabbage, alfalfa, and buckwheat seeds. We found that red cabbage, broccoli, and buckwheat extracts show higher antioxidant potential than alfalfa extract, and buckwheat displays significant inhibition of alpha-glucosidase. Broccoli and red cabbage also demonstrate substantial anti-glycation and lipase inhibitory potentials.

Summary: This study combined network pharmacology and metabolomics to explore the potential mechanism of Shenyan Kangfu Tablets (SYKFT) in treating diabetic nephropathy (DN), identifying potential active components, related targets, and biomarkers. The results suggest that the potential mechanism of SYKFT in treating DN is most related to insulin resistance (IR), demonstrating the feasibility of using network pharmacology and metabolomics to study the mechanisms of herbal treatments for complex diseases.

Summary: The polar extracts and essential oils of sea fennel cultivated in central Italy were analyzed. The extracts contained 21 bioactive compounds, with 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid being the most abundant. Melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep/wake cycle, was identified for the first time in sea fennel extract. The essential oil was mainly composed of monoterpene hydrocarbons and oxygenated monoterpenes. This study highlights the potential use of sea fennel as an edible plant and a source of nutraceutical compounds.

Summary: Bai-Mi-Decoction (BMD), a traditional Chinese medicine formula, has been shown to have protective effects on ischemic stroke (IS). This study aimed to investigate the underlying mechanisms of BMD using pharmacodynamic and metabolomic methods. The results demonstrated that BMD exerted significant neuroprotective effects on rats with middle cerebral artery occlusion-reperfusion injury, potentially through regulating amino acid and glycerophospholipid metabolisms.

Summary: This study developed a high-throughput method for determining 255 pesticide residues in decoctions of Radix Codonopsis and Angelica sinensis using liquid chromatography-time-of-flight/mass spectrometry. The method was verified to be accurate and reliable. The study found a correlation between pesticide properties and the transfer rate of pesticide residues in the decoctions, with water solubility making a significant contribution to the accuracy of the transfer rate prediction model. The study provides preliminary data on the potential risk of exposure to pesticide residues in these decoctions and may serve as a model for other traditional Chinese medicines.
