Cancers are common chronic diseases worldwide and cause severe health burdens. There have been ongoing debates on the role of gut microbiota in the prevention and management of cancers, thus, it is worthwhile to pay high attention to the impacts of gut microbiota on several cancers, such as colon, liver, and breast cancers. In addition, it has been reported that gut microbiota may also affect the efficacy of cancer chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Among all the factors that influence gut microbiota, diet is the most influential and modifiable. The prebiotics, dietary fibers, short-chain fatty acids, and other bioactive compounds are all important dietary components to assist the growth of beneficial microbiota in the gut, which can protect against cancers and promote human health. Their beneficial effects can be due to the fermentation of dietary fibers, the metabolism of phytochemicals, the synthesis of estrogens, and interactions with chemotherapies and immunotherapies. In order to provide updated information of the relationships among dietary components, gut microbiota, and cancer, in this review, we summarize the reciprocal interactions between dietary components and gut microbiota, and highlight the impacts of dietary components on several common cancers by targeting gut microbiota, with the potential mechanisms of actions also intensively discussed. As a result, this review can be very helpful for healthy people as well as cancer patients to prevent or manage cancers via dietary factor-mediated regulation of gut microbiota.

Jiani Yang, Ting Gu, Yongtong Lu, Yuejia Xu, Ren-You Gan, Siew Bee Ng, Quancai Sun, Ye Peng

Summary: Osmanthus fragrans, a traditional fragrant plant cultivated in China for over 2,500 years, has gained increasing attention due to its unique aroma and potential health benefits. This review summarizes the aroma and functional components of O. fragrans, discusses their biosynthetic mechanism, and highlights the beneficial functions and related molecular mechanism of O. fragrans extract. Potential applications and future perspectives are also summarized and discussed. Based on current research, O. fragrans extracts and components have great potential to be developed into value-added functional ingredients with preventive effects on certain chronic diseases. However, efficient, large-scale, and commercially viable extraction methods are crucial, along with more clinical studies to explore its beneficial functions and guide its development into functional food products.

Gut microbiota-mediated metabolism of green tea catechins and the biological consequences: An updated review

Chen Liu, Ren-You Gan, Daiwen Chen, Liang Zheng, Siew Bee Ng, Ivonne M. C. M. Rietjens

Summary: Green tea catechins (GTCs) have various beneficial effects, but their bioavailability is generally low. The majority of ingested GTCs are degraded by gut microbiota, forming low-molecular-weight metabolites. This process improves the bioavailability and enriches the biological activities of GTCs.

Widely targeted metabolomic analysis and antioxidant properties of seeds and sprouts from different broccoli cultivars

Ming-Yue Li, Yi Liu, Kin Weng Kong, Fang Geng, Hong-Yan Liu, Ren-You Gan

Summary: In this study, different cultivars of broccoli seeds and sprouts were investigated for their metabolites, antioxidant properties, total phenolic content (TPC), and total flavonoid content (TFC). The sprouts of Lv Hua (LH), You Xiu (YX), and Bi Lv (BL) had significant differences in metabolites compared to their respective seeds. The linoleic acid metabolism pathway was found to be significant in all three cultivars. Overall, this study provides scientific support for the selection of broccoli cultivars for germination and product development.

Quality evaluation of citrus varieties based on phytochemical profiles and nutritional properties

Huan Guo, Yin-Jian Zheng, Ding-Tao Wu, Xu Du, Hong Gao, Mutamed Ayyash, De-Guang Zeng, Hua-Bin Li, Hong-Yan Liu, Ren-You Gan

Summary: China is a major producer of citrus fruits, and Sichuan is one of the major citrus planting bases with a large citrus planting area. However, there is limited information on the functional, nutritional, and qualitative characteristics of different citrus varieties in Sichuan. This study systematically investigated and analyzed 10 typical citrus varieties cultivated in Sichuan, and found significant differences among the varieties in terms of quality attributes, juice properties, mineral elements, and health-promoting nutritional and functional components. The results provide valuable information for the cultivation and selection of nutritious citrus fruits.

Optimal Six Vector Switching Pattern in Matrix Converters for Reducing Harmonics and Switching Loss

Pengfei Yao, Xiaohua Jiang

Summary: This paper analyzes harmonic distortion caused by the narrow pulse problem in matrix converters and proposes an improved switching pattern based on the basic five vector switching pattern. The improved pattern solves the narrow pulse problem by adding an additional zero vector and adjusting the sequence of the four active vectors to minimize switching times. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed six vector switching pattern reduces low-frequency harmonics, decreases average switching frequency, attenuates sampling frequency harmonics, improves the THD of the output current, and has benefits in both normal and unbalanced input voltage conditions.
