Aims: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), enhanced with extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and nuts, on a composite of adverse maternofoetal outcomes of women with normoglycemia during pregnancy. Methods: This was a sub-analysis of the St Carlos gestational diabetes mellitus Prevention Study. Only normoglycemic women were analysed (697). They were randomized (at 8-12th gestational weeks) to: standard-care control group (337), where fat consumption was limited to 30% of total caloric intake; or intervention group (360), where a MedDiet, enhanced with EVOO and pistachios (40-42% fats of total caloric intake) was recommended. The primary outcome was a composite of maternofoetal outcomes (CMFOs): at least having 1 event of emergency C-section, perineal trauma, pregnancy-induced hypertension and preeclampsia, prematurity, large-for-gestational-age and small-for gestational-age. Results: Crude relative risk showed that the intervention was associated with a significant reduction in the risk of CMFOs (0.48 [0.37-0.63]; p = 0.0001), with a number-needed-to-treat = 5. Risk of urinary tract infections, emergency C-sections, perineal trauma, large-for-gestational-age and small-for gestational age new-borns were also significantly reduced. Conclusion: A MedDiet, enhanced with EVOO and nuts, was associated with a risk reduction of CMFOs in over 50% in normoglycemic pregnant women. Therefore, it might be a potentially adequate diet for pregnant women. (C) 2018 The Author(s) Published by S. Karger AG, Basel

Nunez-Gil, Nieves Gonzalo, Enrico Cerrato, Ferdinando Varbella, Javier Escaned

Summary: The study found that in women with spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD), exposure to exogenous hormone therapy (HT) at the time of presentation is associated with short-term clinical outcomes such as nonfatal myocardial infarction and/or unplanned percutaneous revascularization.

Telomere Length and Telomerase Activity in Subcutaneous and Visceral Adipose Tissues from Obese and Non-Obese Patients with and without Colorectal Cancer

Sergio Garcia-Martinez, Daniel Gonzalez-Gamo, Sofia Elena Tesolato, Ana Barabash, Sofia Cristina de la Serna, Inmaculada Dominguez-Serrano, Jana Dziakova, Daniel Rivera, Antonio Jose Torres, Pilar Iniesta

Summary: It has been found that there is a correlation between obesity and the development of colorectal cancer, but specific biomarkers linking the degree of obesity to the clinical evolution of colorectal cancer patients have not been defined. Through a study on 147 colorectal cancer patients, it was discovered that both the relative telomere length and the activity of telomerase in adipose tissues may serve as parameters of interest in the clinical evaluation of individuals with colorectal cancer.

Summary: The aim of this study was to describe the results of the clinical audit conducted in 2021 and compare them with the 2015 EPOCONSUL audit. The 2021 audit showed increased adherence to recommendations, but there was no significant improvement in clinical evaluation and therapeutic intervention. This suggests the need for more resources to improve the quality of care.

Summary: This study measured the lower tear meniscus height (LTMH) in healthy children and adults using Fourier Domain OCT. The LTMH values were similar between children and adults, but a higher proportion of children had LTMH values suggestive of dry eye disease (DED). Further studies are needed to establish normative LTMH measurements in pediatric populations.

Summary: This study analyzed BMI data from 3,402 hospitalized patients and found a strong association between obesity and adverse COVID-19 outcomes. Patients with obesity had a higher risk of hospitalization, intensive care unit admission, and invasive mechanical ventilation. They also incurred significantly higher medical costs.

Are Activity Wrist-Worn Devices Accurate for Determining Heart Rate during Intense Exercise?

Pilar Martin-Escudero, Ana Maria Cabanas, Maria Luisa Dotor-Castilla, Mercedes Galindo-Canales, Francisco Miguel-Tobal, Cristina Fernandez-Perez, Manuel Fuentes-Ferrer, Romano Giannetti

Summary: The market for wrist-worn devices is growing rapidly, but there is a lack of research on their accuracy in different populations and activities. This study compared heart rate measurements of four popular wrist-worn devices and found that they were reasonably accurate at low activity levels, but tended to underestimate heart rate values during intense physical effort. It is essential to evaluate wrist-worn wearable technology in order to fully understand its impact on psychological and physical health, especially during high-intensity exercise.

Inhaled Maintenance Therapy in the Follow-Up of COPD in Outpatient Respiratory Clinics. Factors Related to Inhaled Corticosteroid Use. EPOCONSUL 2021 Audit

Myriam Calle Rubio, Marc Miravitlles, Jose Luis Lopez-Campos, Bernardino Alcazar Navarrete, Juan Jose Soler Cataluna, Manuel E. Fuentes Ferrer, Juan Luis Rodriguez Hermosa

Summary: The aim of this analysis was to describe the patterns of inhaled maintenance therapy and explore the determinants of prescribing inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) in COPD patients. The study found that ICS were commonly used in low-risk COPD patients, and triple therapy was commonly used in high-risk patients as an escalation strategy. However, a history of exacerbations and eosinophil count were not predictive factors for triple therapy.

Zinc levels of patients with a moderate to severe COVID-19 infection at hospital admission and after 4th days of ward hospitalization and their clinical outcome

Laura Rodelgo Jimenez, Arturo Corbaton Anchuelo, Pablo Matias Soler, Raul Perales Munoz, Manuel Fuentes Ferrer, Inigo Sagastagoitia Fornie, Marina Gil Mosquera, Mercedes Martinez-Novillo Gonzalez

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate zinc levels in patients with moderate to severe COVID-19 infection at admission and after four days, and to investigate whether lower zinc levels at these time points were related to a worse clinical outcome. The results showed that zinc concentrations below 79μg/dL were associated with a worse prognosis. Additionally, patients with a better clinical evolution exhibited higher serum zinc levels on the fourth day after admission.

Summary: The pathophysiology of body weight control involves complex interactions between hormonal, environmental, behavioral and genetic factors. This study analyzed the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of 13 genes encoding gastrointestinal peptides and long-term weight response in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Eight genetic variants were identified that were independently associated with weight response, and the highest scoring category in each risk score was significantly associated with lower weight loss and greater weight regain at the end of the follow-up.

Mixed Meal Tolerance Test Versus Continuous Glucose Monitoring for an Effective Diagnosis of Persistent Post-Bariatric Hypoglycemia

Ana M. Ramos-Levi, Miguel A. Rubio-Herrera, Pilar Matia-Martin, Natalia Perez-Ferre, Clara Marcuello, Andres Sanchez-Pernaute, Antonio J. Torres-Garcia, Alfonso L. Calle-Pascual

Summary: Gastric bypass surgery can lead to increased incretin secretion and glucose excursions, potentially causing post-bariatric hypoglycemia (PBH). This study evaluated the effectiveness of mixed meal tolerance tests (MMTT) and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) for diagnosing PBH. The MMTT confirmed PBH diagnosis in a large percentage of patients, especially those with longer postsurgical duration, while CGM identified both nocturnal asymptomatic and daytime postprandial hypoglycemia. The results highlight the importance of both tests in diagnosing and monitoring PBH after gastric bypass.
