Summary: This study investigated the chemical composition and rheological properties of a novel exopolysaccharide (EPS), which showed that it had the ability to increase viscosity with concentration, exhibited non-Newtonian shear thinning behavior at concentrations above 0.1 wt%, and demonstrated weak gel-like structure and thermal stability. It also showed good recoverability and self-healing properties.

Summary: Iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters are ancient protein cofactors that exist ubiquitously in organisms and play important roles in various life processes. Plastids, semi-autonomous organelles believed to originate from cyanobacterial endosymbionts, have a Fe-S cluster biosynthesis and delivery pathway similar to cyanobacteria. Fe-S clusters are crucial for the normal functioning of downstream Fe-S proteins in plastids. Recent research has made significant progress in understanding this pathway and this review summarizes these findings as well as the remaining scientific challenges.

Summary: In this study, a marine bacterium named Alteromonas macleodii Mo169 was cultivated using sugar-rich apple pulp waste as the sole carbon source. The strain efficiently utilized the glucose and fructose in the waste to produce biomass and EPS. The compositional analysis of the EPS revealed the presence of various sugar monomers, possibly derived from a high molecular weight polysaccharide in the apple pulp waste. The EPS also exhibited good thickening capacity, making it suitable for various applications.

Summary: Copper is a necessary mineral nutrient but excess copper is cytotoxic. Wilson's disease is an autosomal recessive hereditary disease characterized by pathological copper accumulation in organs. The molecular mechanism of Wilson's disease is not fully understood and further research is needed to develop therapeutic strategies.

Summary: Microorganisms use electron bifurcating enzymes to carry out unfavorable reactions. The HydABC enzyme is found to be common in the microbial world and has various functionalities. A new class of electron bifurcating enzyme, the Bfu family, is proposed to be associated with specific microbial phyla.

Summary: The research shows that the marine heterotrophic bacterium Alteromonas macleodii can enhance the growth of Isochrysis galbana, inhibit stress responses, enhance photosynthesis and biosynthesis, and protect the algae from oxidative stress. There may be an exchange of fixed organic carbon and other biomolecules between the autotroph and heterotroph in the co-culture of I. galbana and A. macleodii.

Summary: We investigated the maturation of [FeFe]-hydrogenase by using a synthetic complex [Fe-2(& mu;-SH)(2)(CN)(2)(CO)(4)](2-) and the components of glycine cleavage system together with HydF, without the presence of the maturases HydE and HydG. This semisynthetic and fully-defined maturation process offers new insights into the biosynthesis of H-cluster.

Summary: Redox cofactors play a crucial role in mediating electron transfer in biological enzymes. One example is the [FeFe]-hydrogenase I from Clostridium acetobutylicum, which utilizes a terminal, non-canonical, His-coordinated, [4Fe-4S] cluster to mediate interfacial electron transfer. Substituting His for Cys in this enzyme results in changes in electron transfer properties and reactivity, demonstrating the importance of His coordination in controlling electron exchange.

Summary: Fe-S clusters are ancient and important for life processes. The biogenesis of Fe-S clusters involves iron acquisition, sulfur mobilization, and cluster formation. Two Arabidopsis DnaJ proteins, DJA6 and DJA5, play a crucial role in facilitating iron incorporation into Fe-S clusters during chloroplast Fe-S cluster biogenesis. Loss of these proteins leads to defects in chloroplast Fe-S protein accumulation and photosynthesis dysfunction. Evolutionary analysis shows that DJA6 and DJA5 are highly conserved in photosynthetic organisms and have a strong evolutionary relationship with SUFE1, SUFC, and SUFD.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the H2-releasing ability of new strains of cyanobacteria and evaluate the effects of the photosystem II inhibitor DCMU on H2 production under light and dark conditions. The results demonstrate that cultures treated with DCMU produced several times more H2 than untreated cells. The highest H2 photoproduction rate of 4.24 mmol H2 (mg Chl a h)-1 was observed in Dolichospermum sp. IPPAS B.

Summary: From bacteria to plants and humans, the glutathione system plays a crucial role in defense against various stresses and maintaining cellular homeostasis. Glutathione directly scavenges reactive oxygen species and serves as a cofactor for important enzymes involved in detoxification. This review focuses on the glutathione system in selected model organisms, with an emphasis on cyanobacteria due to their evolution of photosynthesis and the synthesis of important glutathione-derived metabolites. Cyanobacteria provide a unique genetic approach to analyze the specific roles and redundancy of the glutathione system components.

Summary: In this study, it was discovered that NFU1 and ISCA1 in the mitochondrial iron-sulfur cluster assembly machinery play a crucial role in the insertion of a [4Fe-4S] cluster into LIAS by forming a heterodimeric complex. The C-domain of NFU1 drives the cluster to its final destination by exploiting a protein interaction affinity gradient.
