Summary: Behavioral models play a central role in studying the neural mechanisms of maladaptive behaviors. This article explores the use of animal models to investigate dysregulated reward-seeking behaviors, such as binge eating and drug addiction. The speakers in the symposium focus on understanding the neural mechanisms underlying binge-like consumption, enhanced cue-driven reward seeking, excessive motivation, and continued use despite negative consequences.

Summary: This study observed compulsive eating in stress-induced binge-like eating rats, showing that binge-like eating prone rats had high sucrose intake and inhibited fear response, indicating deficits in palatability devaluation and anxiolytic response to sucrose. Neuronal activation analysis revealed that sucrose did not inhibit amygdala activity but activated central amygdala. Sucrose reduced responses in the paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus and enhanced activities in the lateral hypothalamic area in BEPs.

Summary: This study used a modified conditioned place preference paradigm to assess zebrafish's preference for nicotine and its association with environmental cues. The results showed that zebrafish's seeking behavior was closely related to the shades of compartment colors, and they spent more time in the environment associated with nicotine.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) among individuals with a primary eating disorder (ED) diagnosis, finding the highest rates in anorexia nervosa binge-eating purging type patients. OCD was more prevalent in patient samples than those from the community.

Summary: Studies have found that individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorder exhibit disordered eating behaviors such as binge eating, food craving, food addiction, and night eating, with higher prevalence rates compared to the general population. Positive associations were reported between certain disordered eating behaviors and factors such as antipsychotic use, female gender, weight gain, and increased dietary intake.

Summary: This qualitative study explored the personal experiences of women with binge eating disorder who participated in a 12-week trial comparing pharmacotherapy and cognitive behavioural therapy. Participants highlighted the importance of self-awareness in addressing binge eating behaviors and emotions, as well as the value of interpersonal relationships with clinicians. Medication (MP) was seen to reduce food preoccupation and binge frequency, while CBT focused on psychoeducation and long-term binge management skills. Stress was identified as a primary trigger for binge eating in both groups.

Summary: This review article discusses the relevance of the reward system in behavioral addictions such as gambling disorder, internet gaming disorder, and food addiction/binge eating disorder. Specifically, it explores the role of the ventral striatum as a possible biomarker for these conditions and discusses studies analyzing brain changes following interventions for these disorders.

Summary: The objective of this study was to determine the associations between food insecurity and binge-eating disorder in early adolescence. The research found that food insecurity in early adolescence is associated with higher odds of developing future binge-eating and binge-eating disorder (BED). Clinicians should consider assessing for binge eating in adolescents with food insecurity and provide support in accessing appropriate food resources.

Summary: Alcohol abuse has a significant impact on individuals' lives, and the benefits of social support in addiction prevention and rehabilitation are not fully understood. This study compared the effects of social interaction on ethanol approach behavior in rats, and found that social interaction can reduce ethanol preference, highlighting the importance of social support in addiction prevention, treatment, and recovery programs.

Summary: This study examines the establishment of conditioned place preference (CPP) using virtual alcohol cues and finds that participants with alcohol use spend significantly more time in the conditioned room compared to participants without alcohol use during the test session. However, participants with alcohol use do not subjectively report a preference for the conditioned room.

Summary: This study collected data from experts in the field of binge eating disorder to gain insight into the clinical aspects of this disorder. The findings reveal the importance of understanding the relationship between binge eating disorder and obesity, as well as the role of food/eating restriction and emotion dysregulation in the pathology of this disorder. The study also highlights paradigm shifts in the understanding of eating disorders and the need for further research in classification issues.

Summary: This study aimed to compare food addiction and binge-eating disorder in terms of emotion dysregulation and emotional eating. The study found that individuals with obesity and comorbid BED exhibit greater emotional dysregulation compared to those with obesity only or food addiction, indicating a need to assess BED in individuals with obesity.

Summary: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a devastating illness characterized by heavy drinking and withdrawal. Chronic intermittent exposure to ethanol activates the PACAP/PAC1R system in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, leading to increased alcohol intake and anxiety-like behavior during withdrawal.

Summary: Impulsive action, characterized by the inability to withhold a response, is influenced by both sex and the estrous cycle. The modified DRL task used in the study effectively measured impulsive action and validated the convergence of results, suggesting the potential of Sig-1R antagonism as a novel pharmacological strategy for reducing impulsive action.
