Summary: This study compared the clinical features, laboratory findings, and prognosis of Behcet’s disease (BD) patients with and without Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS). Patients with BCS had earlier disease onset and diagnosis, higher frequency of inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombosis, and higher mortality rate compared to those without BCS. Mortality was significantly higher in BD-BCS patients with IVC thrombosis than in the controls.

Summary: Women previously diagnosed with Budd-Chiari syndrome and/or portal vein thrombosis, with or without concomitant portal hypertension, can achieve relatively good pregnancy outcomes, with a high rate of term live births and lower risk of maternal and neonatal complications. Therefore, these conditions should not be considered as absolute contraindications for pregnancy, and individualized counseling and multidisciplinary pregnancy surveillance are essential.

Summary: Primary Budd-Chiari Syndrome (BCS) is a life-threatening disease caused by obstruction of the hepatic venous outflow tract due to thrombosis or a primary venous wall disease. Recent advancements have enhanced our knowledge of BCS and its outcomes.

Summary: This article summarizes the histopathological changes in Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS), which overlap with sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) and right cardiac failure. It is important to differentiate these conditions from BCS based on clinical and pathological grounds. The review focuses on three main aspects of BCS in diagnostic liver histopathology: general histopathology of BCS, implications for liver biopsy interpretation, and BCS in the liver allograft. The histological features of BCS vary in each individual case and sampling variation limits the use of liver biopsy for prognostication.

Summary: Medical treatment is limited in patients with Budd-Chiari syndrome, and most require interventional treatment. Asian countries commonly have short-segment stenosis or occlusion of hepatic veins or the inferior vena cava, treated with angioplasty or stent implantation. Western countries often have long-segment thrombotic occlusion of hepatic veins, requiring portocaval shunting procedures. The transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt is gaining popularity as an effective treatment option.

Summary: Budd-Chiari syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by symptoms such as abdominal pain, hepatomegaly, and ascites, often related to thrombosis of the hepatic veins or inferior vena cava. Anticoagulant therapy is the mainstay of treatment for BCS, with most patients requiring additional treatment strategies. Endovascular intervention has been shown to improve survival rates in BCS patients.

Summary: Acute Budd-Chiari syndrome and complete portal vein thrombosis, common features of myeloproliferative neoplasm, can lead to acute liver failure simultaneously. Liver transplantation can be an effective treatment option in this catastrophic condition, with low post-transplant complications.

Summary: This study used whole-exome sequencing to identify potential risk mutations for Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) and developed a polygenic risk scoring model for BCS prediction. The study also revealed genetic risk differences between China and the West and identified shared genetic risks among BCS, venous thromboembolism, and vascular malformations.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the medical records of Moroccan patients with BD, including those with BCS, to investigate the prevalence, clinical features, treatment, and prognosis of BCS associated with BD. The study found that BCS is not uncommon in patients with BD and can be life threatening. It is frequently associated with other vascular manifestations that can be difficult to treat. Prognosis improved with the use of immunosuppressants, and biologics may be promising in the early stages.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the gonadal function in male patients with BCS and the effect of treatment on gonadal function. The results showed that there is a certain proportion of gonadal dysfunction in BCS patients, with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH) being the most common type, and this type improves significantly after treatment.

Summary: Research suggests that cystic liver lesions (CLL) in dolphins are different from acute systemic gas embolism in stranded beaked whales, and are possibly caused by a combination of gas bubbles exacerbating a pre-existing hepatic vascular disorder. Further research is needed to determine the precise etiology and contributing factors for CLL in cetaceans.

Summary: This study investigates the outcomes of liver transplantation for patients with Budd-Chiari syndrome. The results show that liver transplantation with individualized surgical and postoperative treatment strategy provides comparable outcomes, but the risk of thrombotic complications is significantly increased in the Budd-Chiari group.

Summary: This study evaluated the hospitalization rates, severe disease, all-cause mortality, ICU requirement, and AKI risk in COVID-19 patients with Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS). Compared to non-CLD patients, BCS patients had a higher risk of all-cause mortality, severe disease, hospitalization, and AKI, but no significant difference in ICU requirements. Compared to non-BCS CLD patients, BCS patients had a higher risk of all-cause mortality and hospitalization, but no statistically significant differences in ICU requirements, AKI, or severe disease.
