The rates of antibiotic susceptibility and resistance were investigated in Streptococcus iniae and Streptococcus parauberis isolates obtained from diseased olive flounders (Paralichthys olivaceus) collected from fish farms in Jeju Island, Korea. Isolates of S. iniae (n = 65) were susceptible to cefotaxime, erythromycin, ofloxacin, penicillin, tetracycline and vancomycin, as demonstrated by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test. Isolates of S. parauberis (n = 86) were highly resistant to erythromycin (58% of the 86 isolates tested) and tetracycline (63% of the 86 isolates tested). Fifty-four isolates of tetracycline-resistant S. parauberis contained the tet(M/O/S) genes, of which 39 and 12 isolates contained the tet(M) and tet(S) genes, respectively, whereas 3 isolates contained both the tet(M) and tet(S) genes. Among the erythromycin-resistant isolates of S. parauberis (n = 50) only 14 contained the erm(B) gene. These results suggest that the tet(S) and erm(B) genes of S. parauberis are involved in the acquisition of high-level resistance to erythromycin and tetracycline. Our findings reveal a high rate of antibiotic resistance among strains of S. parauberis and emphasize the need to develop an appropriate vaccine to reduce the use of antibiotics. Molecular cloning and characterization of chemokine C-C motif ligand 34 (CCL34) genes from olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus)

Summary: Chemokines are a superfamily of chemotactic cytokines that regulate leukocyte migration and immune responses. PoCCL34, a fish-specific CC chemokine, induced chemotaxis and inflammatory response in olive flounder, but did not increase expression of antiviral genes. These results suggest that PoCCL34 plays a significant role in the immune response of flounder by mediating inflammation.

Membrane vesicles from antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus transfer antibiotic-resistance to antibiotic-susceptible Escherichia coli

Summary: The study demonstrates that membrane vesicles (MVs) from Gram-positive bacteria are capable of transferring beta-lactam antibiotic-resistant substances to antibiotic-sensitive Gram-negative bacteria, resulting in increased resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics.MVs play a role in transferring substances from Gram-positive to Gram-negative bacteria, shown by the release of MVs from RC85-T that were able to protect beta-lactam-susceptible bacteria from beta-lactam antibiotics.

Summary: The study utilized computational techniques to validate the potential IL2R alpha binding properties of three polyphenol stilbenes from fenugreek, demonstrating stable interactions with IL2R alpha through molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations. Rhaponticin showed slightly better binding free energy and all stilbenes followed ADMET rules. Further in vitro IL2R alpha binding studies, especially on rhaponticin, are supported by this computational study.

Hair Growth-Promoting Activities of Glycosaminoglycans Extracted from the Tunics of Ascidian (Halocynthia roretzi)

Summary: Hair plays an important role in framing individual personality and appearance, but there is a lack of groundbreaking measures to solve related problems. Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and associated proteoglycans have been found to play important roles in the regulation of the hair follicle cycle. Three fractions (F1, F2, and F3) of GAGs from ascidian tunics were obtained, with F3 showing the highest proliferation activity on human follicle dermal papilla cells. Mixed samples (FFM) of F2 and F3 also exhibited peak activities at different concentrations.

Summary: Feed deprivation leads to rapid depletion of carbohydrate and lipid stores in rohu fish, accompanied by an increase in gluconeogenic and antioxidant enzyme activities and inhibition of lipogenic enzyme activity. Feed deprivation beyond 30 days causes a reduction in their overall metabolic activities.

CD4+T lymphocyte responses to viruses and virus-relevant stimuli in teleost fish

Dennis Berbulla Bela-ong, Kim D. Thompson, Hyoung Jun Kim, Seong Bin Park, Tae Sung Jung

Summary: Fish diseases caused by viruses pose a significant threat to aquaculture. Understanding the immune mechanisms involved in antiviral defense is crucial for developing sustainable disease protection strategies. This review focuses on the role of CD4+ T cells in fish immune responses to viral infections and immunomodulation. Studies have shown that CD4+ T cells in fish exhibit similar responses to mammalian Th cells, including proliferation and expression of key cytokines, transcription factors, and effector molecules. Gaps in our understanding of teleost CD4+ T cell responses are discussed, and the development of novel tools and approaches to study these responses is suggested.
