Summary: This article evaluates the impact of ethnic fractionalization on different indicators of energy poverty in Nepal. The results show that ethnic fractionalization leads to an increase in energy poverty among Nepalese households, with low-caste individuals being particularly affected. Income appears to mediate the effect of ethnic fractionalization on energy poverty in Nepal.

Summary: Although older people rarely report being victims of financial cybercrime, this study provides evidence that older online users are at increased risk. The researchers identified factors leading to older adults' victimization and proposed interventions to reduce these risks.

Summary: This study examines the link between firm export activity and female employment share in China and finds that exporters tend to have a larger share of female employees and a smaller gender earnings gap compared to non-exporters. The analysis suggests that this gender-friendlier behavior is driven by cost-competitive motivations rather than international laws or exploiting gender comparative advantages. Additionally, the study shows that the production profession, non-SOEs, and firms with lower management efficiency in China are more sensitive to market competition.

Summary: The acceptance of real-world evidence (RWE) in decision-making has led to a growth in RWE studies on diabetes and other diseases. However, recent retractions have shown the need for improvements in research conduct, peer review, and editorial processes. To enhance RWE study assessments, the authors propose the use of reporting guidelines, availability of study protocols, inclusion of experts, and detailed data information.

Summary: Based on survey data from 406 citrus farmers in Hubei Province, this paper empirically examines the effects of risk aversion and Internet use on farmers' marketing behavior in terms of fresh produce. The results show that risk aversion and Internet use have a significant impact on farmers' reluctance to sell fresh produce. This study provides insights into the factors influencing farmers' reluctance to sell and offers reference suggestions for promoting high-quality agricultural development and rural industrial revitalization.

Summary: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common genetic disorder characterized by elevated LDL-C levels due to defective clearance of LDL particles, leading to increased risk of premature cardiovascular disease. Besides LDL-C, other CVD risk factors may also contribute to the overall CVD risk burden in FH patients.

Summary: Research suggests that diet and nutrition play a role in the risk of developing various types of cancer, with certain food/nutrient associations showing strong evidence. Alcohol consumption, dairy intake, and calcium are associated with different risks of developing cancer. Studies using umbrella reviews of meta-analyses can provide insights into the strength of evidence linking food and nutrients to cancer risk.

Summary: Severe COVID-19 patients exhibit an overreaction of the immune system, resulting in a cytokine storm and increased inflammation. This article discusses the potential risk of depression in survivors of severe COVID-19 who experience significant immune system activation. It also proposes the mechanisms of how cytokine storm and SARS-CoV-2 neuroinvasion may lead to long-term mental health consequences.

Summary: The purpose of the study was to estimate the frequency of associated injuries (AIs) and measure the association between age and risk for AI among patients with facial fractures. The study found that elderly patients had a higher risk of AIs compared to adults, and they were more likely to have injuries to multiple organ systems, brain injuries, neck injuries, and higher mortality rates.

Summary: The crash risk for novice drivers decreases significantly during the first few months of driving. This study examines the characteristics of driving during this period and identifies behaviors that may contribute to the reduction in risk. The findings suggest that exposure to risky driving situations does not appear to be more common among drivers with shorter license durations. Additionally, a new questionnaire called EDD-Q is developed to measure safety attitudes and behaviors in newly qualified drivers.

Summary: The study examined the association between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and prostate cancer risk in 2204 middle-aged men over a median follow-up of 24.9 years. The findings suggest that elevated CRF is not associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer, with consistent results even after adjusting for various risk factors. Previous studies that reported associations between high CRF and prostate cancer risk may be influenced by increased screening and detection, as well as reverse causation bias.

Summary: The study suggests that ex ante and ex post peer review motivate scientists toward different sets of scientific questions. The personal and peer scientific beliefs of reviewers can influence their rankings of proposals and preferences for research questions. Researchers are faced with the challenge of finding projects that can survive both modes of review, creating a tension between ex ante and ex post review.

Summary: Suicide among athletes is a major mental and public health issue. Research shows that professional and high-performance athletes have lower rates of suicide, but attention should be given to unique factors such as sports-related stress, severe physical injuries, and life stressors after retirement. A multidisciplinary approach is needed to understand and address suicide in athletes and reduce morbidity and mortality related to suicide.

Summary: This review synthesised qualitative research on how women perceive their increased risk of breast cancer. Women tend to appraise their risk by comparing it with other familial diseases. They heavily rely on family history and assess their likelihood of diagnosis based on similarities and differences with affected relatives. Women at increased risk often feel uncertainty and inevitability regarding diagnosis, leading to concerns about risk management. Personal appraisals of breast cancer risk are mainly formed through personal experiences with breast cancer in the family. Healthcare professionals should explore women's personal risk appraisals before providing clinically derived risk estimates to address misconceptions, reduce concerns about inevitability, and increase perceived control over risk reduction.

Summary: This study investigates DNA methylation in solid human tissues and identifies tissue-specific methylation regulation. By integrating functional maps, candidate genes are identified for majority of mQTL loci, and it is found that only a small fraction of loci have both eQTL and mQTL present in the same tissue type. This research is of significant importance for understanding molecular regulatory mechanisms in human tissues and their impact on complex traits.
