Summary: This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of laparoscopic functional total mesorectum excision (TME) on urinary and sexual functions in male patients with rectal cancer. The results showed that functional TME surgery was beneficial to faster recovery of urinary and sexual function for patients.

Summary: This study compared urinary dysfunction and its impact on quality of life in women who underwent total mesorectal excision versus partial mesorectal excision for rectal cancer treatment. The results showed no significant difference in urinary dysfunction or its influence on quality of life between the two groups. Prolonged hospital stay was associated with increased risk of urinary dysfunction to some degree, according to multivariate analysis.

Summary: The study aims to compare the effects of local excision or conventional laparoscopic total mesorectal excision after chemoradiotherapy in patients with rectal cancer. Quality of life, digestive and genitourinary functions were measured using validated questionnaires, and the socioeconomic impact was also assessed.

Summary: This study evaluated the results of laparotomic, laparoscopic, and robotic surgery in treating rectal cancer. The study found that laparoscopic TME is a better choice in a multidisciplinary context, while robotic TME has a significant difference in terms of hospital stay.

Summary: There were no significant differences in the 3-year local recurrence rate between the taTME and laTME groups. Additionally, the disease-free survival and overall survival rates within 3 years after surgery were also similar between the two groups.

Summary: This retrospective study compared the short-term outcomes of transanal and laparoscopic total mesorectal excisions for low and middle rectal cancers. The transanal group had significantly shorter operative times, lower positive circumferential resection margins rates, and lower incidence of grade III and IV complications compared to the laparoscopic group. This demonstrates the safety and usefulness of transanal total mesorectal excision for middle and low rectal cancers.

Summary: In male patients with rectal cancer, preserving Denonvilliers' fascia during L-TME surgery has been shown to have a better outcome on postoperative urogenital function compared to resection, reducing the incidence of urinary and sexual dysfunction.

Summary: This study reports the results of a rigorous quality control process in grading total mesorectal excision (TME) specimens during a multicenter prospective phase 2 trial. The study found a 14% rate of major discordance in grading between the site and central reviewers, and 93% of these discordances were resolved through reconciliation. The study recommends the use of central review and reconciliation for quality control in grading TME specimens.

Summary: This study found that mismatch repair-deficient, locally advanced rectal cancer is highly sensitive to PD-1 blockade. Additionally, no adverse events of grade 3 or higher have been reported, and no cases of progression or recurrence have been observed. Longer follow-up is needed to assess the duration of response.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed 44 patients with mid and low rectal cancer who underwent low anterior resection via taTME. The results showed that 91% of TME specimens were graded as complete or near complete, with a post-operative complication rate of 18.2% and a local recurrence rate of 4.5%. This indicates that using the taTME approach can yield comparably safe and effective outcomes to laparoscopic proctectomy in technically complex cases.

Summary: This study analyzed the trend and outcomes of revisional bariatric surgery in Italy. The results showed that revisional bariatric surgery represented a small proportion of total bariatric surgeries in Italian centers, and there were no significant differences in mortality, complication, readmission, and reoperation rates compared to the control group. The current trend revealed that sleeve gastrectomy was the most frequently revised procedure.

Summary: Limited data exists on the outcomes of hemorrhoids treatment in special conditions such as pregnancy, immunosuppression, and inflammatory bowel disease. Surgery for hemorrhoids in such patients should be approached cautiously, with conservative medical treatment as the first-line approach.
