Summary: A series of N-Boc ketimines derived from pyrazolin-5-ones have been successfully used as electrophiles in enantioselective Mannich reactions with different 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds. The reaction enables the synthesis of 4-amino-5-pyrazolone derivatives with diverse structures, including the beta-diketone and pyrazolinone substructures. The use of a quinine-derived bifunctional squaramide as an organocatalyst with a very low loading proves to be highly effective in terms of yield and enantioselectivity. The obtained products can be further transformed into enantioenriched diheterocyclic systems, which show potential as drug candidates.

Summary: A direct enantioselective synthesis of 2-substituted chromen-4-ones with an amino group at the α-stereogenic center of the heterocycle has been developed. This method is based on Mannich-type asymmetric addition of 3-hydroxychromen-4-one and its analogues to N-protected imines in the presence of the alkaloid dihydrocuprein. α-Stereogenic chromenone amino derivatives were obtained in yields of 81-95% with up to 98% ee. The chiral adducts were then transformed into various enantiomerically enriched chromen-4-one functional derivatives.

Summary: In this study, melamine was used as the research object, and the surface enhanced Raman spectrum of melamine in liquid milk was collected using a portable Raman spectrometer. Melamine was qualitatively identified and semi-quantitatively analyzed based on Raman characteristic peak and intensity, and a simple and efficient rapid screening method for limited contaminations was developed. The proposed method can meet the rapid screening requirements of limited contaminations at the maximum residue limit and has good application prospects.

Summary: Hafnium(IV) triflate (Hf(OTf)(4)) has been identified as a potent catalyst for the direct three-component synthesis of beta-carbamate ketones. This new method, featuring a low catalyst loading, fast reaction rate, and solvent-free conditions, provides easy access to a variety of carbamate-protected Mannich bases. Mechanistic investigation reveals that the three-component reaction proceeds through sequential aldol condensation and aza-Michael addition, rather than the Mannich-type pathway.

Summary: The research reported the direct asymmetric synthesis of pyrimido[2,1-b]benzothiazoles using a commercially available chiral amine catalyst. Various 2-benzothiazolimines and aldehydes were well tolerated under the reaction conditions, yielding products with high diastereoselectivities and enantioselectivities. Additionally, the products could be easily converted to other useful chiral building blocks.

Summary: This study demonstrated the direct detection of melamine in liquid milk and infant formula at low concentrations using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in combination with silver nanodendrites (AgNDs). Results showed a good linear relationship between melamine SERS intensity and concentration in both liquid milk and infant formula. The high correlation coefficients suggest that SERS is a promising analytical method for application in food safety and environmental monitoring.

Summary: Published data suggests that sparingly soluble metal complexes of TCNQF1-n, where n=0, 1, 2, 4, can act as heterogeneous catalysts for the slow [Fe(CN)6]3- =4- -S2O2-3/S4O2-6 reaction in water. However, this study shows that the coordination polymer CuTCNQF4 can participate as a homogeneous catalyst through a small concentration of dissolved TCNQF1-4. UV-visible spectrophotometry was used to study the catalysis of the redox reaction in the presence of various catalysts. The findings suggest the need to reevaluate the mechanism of catalysis by TCNQF4 based solids.

Summary: The recycling of waste mandarin peels into biochar (MRBC) has been used as a high performance and cost-effective adsorbent for treating polluted wastewater effluents. Batch adsorption studies were conducted to analyze the adsorption competency of MRBC on two dyes, methylene blue (MB) and basic fuchsin (BF), either in individual solutions or binary combinations. The results showed that MRBC was capable of effectively removing a high percentage of both dyes. However, the adsorption capacity decreased when the dyes were combined. The cost estimation of MRBC production and wastewater treatment indicated that both were relatively low.

Summary: Raman spectroscopy is commonly used for studying glassy materials in cultural heritage, but it is more difficult to interpret the spectra and apply the technique with portable instruments. In contrast, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) can be used in archaeometric investigations as it is portable and non-invasive. However, there is limited application of this technique to historical glasses. This exploratory work demonstrates the potential of DRIFTS, in combination with portable X-ray Fluorescence (pXRF) and EDS microanalyses, for studying the composition and alteration of glass samples in cultural heritage.
