The phenotyping of secondary characters is a common practice in breeding programs aiming at finding physiological mechanism related to drought tolerance. However, the dynamics of these characters depend on crop phenology, levels of water shortage, and other factors that affect their relationship with yield and limit their capacity to be used for predictive purposes. In this work, we compared tuber yield with the temporal trend (using accumulated thermal time) of chlorophyll concentration (ChIspAD), osmotic potential, and relative water content under water restriction. UNICA, a potato variety characterized by its low drought susceptibility was tested under full irrigation (as a control) and different treatments of partial root-zone drying and deficit irrigation in greenhouse and field conditions. ChIspAD was the only trait showing a concurrent changing trend (slope) with yields, particularly in field conditions. The rate of greenness loss or senescence was slower in the higher water restriction treatments, which indicates that the stay-green effect (delayed senescence) occurs in some potato varieties. ChIspAD at the loss of half the maximum plant cover during senescence (between 1040 and 1170 C days) was high and negatively correlated with final yield in all irrigation treatments. Our findings suggest that during senescence, chlorophyll increment is not related to a rise of carbon assimilation (non-functional stay-green), but could be associated with an oxidative stress occurrence, ultimately reducing yield. Summary: Rice production is the biggest contributor to plant-based carbon emissions globally, particularly in Asia. Introducing sustainable intensification practices or diversifying with lower-emission crops like potatoes is crucial for mitigating climate change. This study analyzed the impact of potato cultivation under zero/minimum-tillage and/or organic mulching on key performance indicators in Asia. The results showed that potato cultivation under these conditions can increase yield, profitability, nutrient-use efficiency, and water productivity, thanks to significant soil moisture conservation.

Summary: This study used the Ledflex fluorometer to measure the effect of water stress on chlorophyll fluorescence in a fescue field under extreme temperature and light conditions. The results showed a significant decrease in fluorescence level under water stress, which was correlated with surface temperature difference. Airflex fluorometer data obtained from an ultralight plane also supported the findings.

Active and passive chlorophyll fluorescence measurements at canopy level on potato crops. Evidence of similitude of diurnal cycles of apparent fluorescence yields

Hildo Loayza, Ismael Moya, Roberto Quiroz, A. Ounis, Yves Goulas

Summary: We conducted active and passive measurements of diurnal cycles of chlorophyll fluorescence on potato crops for 26 days. The results showed that variations in chlorophyll fluorescence were directly influenced by changes in irradiance conditions. Under cloudy sky, chlorophyll fluorescence varied in parallel with photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). On clear sky days, a M-shaped diurnal pattern with a minimum around noon was observed. We derived a proxy of fluorescence yield (FYSIF) from spectral transmittance and demonstrated its close relationship with Fs, outperforming other normalization methods.

Summary: The KNOX gene plays crucial roles in plant development, and this study identified 19 KNOX gene members in kiwifruit. One of the genes, AcKNOX11, is selectively expressed in flower buds and shoots, and its expression can be induced by ABA and melatonin. Functional analysis revealed that AcKNOX11 delays flowering, reduces plant height, alters leaf shape, and inhibits seed germination through ABA-melatonin interaction.

Ziwen Su, Juan Yan, Binbin Zhang, Meng Sun, Zhixiang Cai, Zhijun Shen, Ruijuan Ma, Mingliang Yu

Summary: Bagging is a crucial cultivation measure that affects the quality of peach fruit by regulating exposure to light. This study investigated the effects of bagging on the content of phenolic compounds in peach fruit and identified the most sensitive compounds to bagging treatment. The study also explored the regulatory role of bagging on phenolic synthetic-related genes. The results showed that bagging affected the accumulation of different phenolics in different peach cultivars and light intensity played a significant role in the accumulation of anthocyanins and other phenolic substances in peach fruit. Additionally, the expression of structural genes and transcription factors related to phenolic synthesis was regulated by bagging and light conditions. These findings provide a foundation for understanding the regulation mechanism of light on the synthesis of phenolic compounds in peach fruit.

Genotypic differences in water deficit effects on leaf and crown traits in mature field-grown cocoa

Summary: This study investigated the effects of water stress on cocoa trees and found that they are highly sensitive to water stress, with different genotypes exhibiting varied responses. Potassium application did not mitigate the negative effects of water stress. There was significant variation among genotypes in terms of leaf and crown traits, and positive interactions between genotype and irrigation were observed. These findings provide insights into the acclimation strategies of cocoa trees and can be useful for selecting drought-tolerant genotypes.
