Summary: This article examines whether global science bodies can influence state party negotiations through a sentiment analysis of scientific inputs in the debates of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). It identifies two pathways, pushing and participation, through which science can shape the tone of debates. However, the article finds these pathways lacking in the CBD negotiations, as empirical evidence shows limited impact of scientific inputs on the sentiment or tone of debates. The conclusion reflects on the role of sentiment analysis in understanding the complex politics of science in global governance institutions, specifically in biodiversity governance.

Summary: The study reveals a complex relationship between board gender diversity, corporate risk-taking, and firm performance. Culture significantly moderates the relationship between board gender diversity and risk tolerance, with different cultural backgrounds in various countries influencing the impact of gender diversity on corporate boards.

Summary: This study evaluates six scenarios proposed for the revision of genetic indicators in CBD and finds that all proposals would cause substantial genetic harm to species after 100 years. Therefore, alternative indicators are suggested to reflect improvements in the genetic status of species.

Summary: The article introduces a new analytical framework based on the traditional willingness-capacity framework for studying China's implementation of the CBD, utilizing both historical analysis and empirical study methods. Factors such as development philosophy and model, perception of national environmental interest, economic and technological level, and attitude toward global environmental governance jointly determine China's role in implementation and its evolution from follower to major participant to active contributor. This framework may also provide insight into challenges for China's future implementation and be applicable to understanding implementation of other MEAs in China and other developing countries.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between firm performance and social diversity among corporate directors in India, using religion and caste as proxies for diversity. The study finds that Indian corporate boards were highly homogeneous during 1999-2015. Utilizing four instrumental variable strategies, the study reveals a negative association between board homogeneity and firm performance. This negative impact is attributed to the overlapping views and networks of caste-proximate directors, as well as cronyism that impairs their monitoring and advising roles.

Summary: National idiosyncrasies in the adoption and implementation of the Nagoya Protocol pose obstacles for research-based activities that require access to genetic resources, especially in the field of biological control. South America, as a provider of biological control genetic resources, is reviewed for its adoption status and the number of certificates issued for accessing these resources. The common problems associated with access and export of biological control genetic resources are summarized based on the experience of an Argentine NGO. Communication and awareness-raising activities are suggested to persuade policy makers in South America on the importance of facilitating the exchange of biocontrol genetic resources and complying with ABS regulations.

Summary: Anthropogenic underwater noise is a global source of marine pollution that can harm various marine animals. Discussions on this issue have increased in international forums due to scientific investigations revealing the extent of underwater noise and its threat to marine animals. This article examines whether the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and its institutional measures are the most suitable international regulatory framework to address this problem. The article suggests that the provisions of the CBD can be applied to address anthropogenic underwater noise and proposes the revision of the CBD's Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 as an opportunity to strengthen the conservation of marine biodiversity against this threat.

Summary: Food policies aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle are increasingly being developed through collaborative governance involving public and private stakeholders in negotiating voluntary agreements. However, the effectiveness of these agreements has been questioned due to the influence of the food industry in shaping them. Through a case study of the Dutch prevention agreement on overweight, this article highlights how the food industry was able to sway the regulatory arena towards collaborative governance, allowing them to co-design and modify measures according to their interests. The study concludes that voluntary agreements are weak as an alternative to public regulation, calling for policymakers to reconsider their use and for governments to strengthen their use of public regulation both nationally and at the EU level.

Summary: Despite the passage of 30 years since the adoption of the CBD, few evaluations have been made on its impact on protected areas. Using an original dataset of 169 countries from 1992 to 2015, this study examines the relationship between participation in the CBD and conservation effort in member countries. The findings reveal a positive relationship between protected area expansion, CBD membership, and the Aichi biodiversity targets-Nagoya protocol, as well as a negative relationship with measures of economic development and education, and a positive relationship with forest area.

Summary: The intersection of sustainability and corporate governance is particularly evident in the increasing prominence of leadership diversity. This study contributes to the literature by examining leadership diversity in Singapore's public-listed companies. The results suggest that gender, age, and education diversity have a positive impact on financial performance. Gender diversity and performance follow an inverted U-shaped relationship, with gender parity playing a potentially important role in firm leadership governance.

Summary: We examine whether ESG disclosure is a value driver for sell-side analysts, focusing on the largest 3000 US listed firms between 2012 and 2020. ESG factors, including environmental, social, and governance issues, influence the long-term sustainability of a community and guide the increasingly sustainable-oriented financial markets. Our findings suggest that firms with higher ESG disclosure scores are associated with higher target prices, and the impact of the Paris agreements on stock evaluations is mainly driven by governance disclosure before the agreements and also by environmental disclosure after the event. Overall, our study indicates that ESG disclosure is a strategic tool for firms to create value.

Summary: Indigenous and local communities (ILCs) are recognized as special right-holders under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). However, the recent inclusion of the term 'Indigenous Peoples' in the CBD framework does not truly advance Indigenous Peoples' rights due to complicated restrictions on treaty interpretation. This indicates a growing divergence in the understanding of the rights of IPLCs in international law.

Summary: This study proposes an analytical approach to niche-regime-interactive learning, taking an interorganisational-network-learning perspective. The paper makes both theoretical and empirical contributions, helping to elaborate multi-stakeholder learning, capturing learning dynamics within and between sub-system and system levels, elucidating knowledge-power issues learning is subjected to, and illustrating the value of this network perspective empirically in furthering knowledge on learning at the regime level.
