Aims: Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic indicated for the treatment of adult patients with schizophrenia. It is effective and well tolerated in patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. The aim of the present study was to investigate therapeutic efficacy and tolerability of aripiprazole in patients with first-episode schizophrenia. Methods: Twenty-one patients meeting the DSM-IV criteria for schizophrenia were recruited. The Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS) and the Clinical Global Impressions Scale (CGI) were completed at the beginning of the study and again after 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks of aripiprazole treatment. Side-effects were analyzed using the Udvalg for Kliniske Undersogelser Side-Effect Rating Scale. Weight was checked at each testing session, and prolactin levels were measured at baseline and after 8 weeks of aripiprazole treatment. Results: Significant benefits were observed after the first week of treatment. After 1 week of aripiprazole treatment, subscale and total scores on the PANSS had decreased significantly. This significant decrease was maintained throughout the study period. The mean score of CGI severity was also significantly different after 2 weeks of aripiprazole administration when compared to baseline score, and the significance was maintained thereafter. Weight did not significantly change after aripiprazole administration. Although mean prolactin level was decreased at 8 weeks, the difference was not significant. Conclusions: Aripiprazole is an effective and well-tolerated antipsychotic agent in patients with first-episode schizophrenia. Further investigations with larger samples are needed.

Feasibility of the virtual reality-based assessments in patients with panic disorder

Byung-Hoon Kim, Jae-Jin Kim, Jooyoung Oh, Seung-Hyun Kim, Changsu Han, Hyun-Ghang Jeong, Moon-Soo Lee, Junhyung Kim

Summary: This study assessed the feasibility of virtual reality-based assessment in panic disorder (VRA-PD) and found that patients with PD exhibited higher anxiety levels and physiological responses in a virtual reality environment. The VRA-PD was found to be correlated with anxiety symptoms assessed by psychological scales.

Artificial Intelligence-Based Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) Diagnosis Using Raman Spectroscopic Features of Plasma Exosomes

Hyunku Shin, Youbin Kang, Kwan Woo Choi, Seungmin Kim, Byung-Joo Ham, Yeonho Choi

Summary: In vitro diagnosis using biomarkers offers advantages for depression detection and treatment. This study introduces plasma exosomes as novel biomarkers for major depressive disorder (MDD) diagnosis using deep learning analysis and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The system shows excellent performance in predicting MDD and suggests a potential pre-screening technique for psychiatric disorders.

Gray and white matter abnormalities in major depressive disorder patients and its associations with childhood adversity

Wooyoung Kang, Youbin Kang, Aram Kim, Hyeyoung Kim, Kyu-Man Han, Byung-Joo Ham

Summary: This study aimed to identify gray and white matter abnormalities in MDD patients who experienced childhood adversity. The results showed decreased gray matter in the left rectus and reduced white matter connectivity in various regions including the corpus callosum and superior longitudinal fasciculus. Childhood adversity was found to be negatively correlated with white matter connectivity. These findings suggest that MDD is associated with gray matter atrophy and white matter connectivity changes.

The N-terminus of CXCR4 splice variants determines expression and functional properties

Hee-Kyung Park, Lan Phuong Nguyen, Thai Uy Nguyen, Minyeong Cho, Huong Thi Nguyen, Sunghoon Hurh, Hong-Rae Kim, Jae Young Seong, Cheol Soon Lee, Byung-Joo Ham, Jong-Ik Hwang

Summary: CXCL12 is an essential chemokine for organ development and homeostasis, and its receptor CXCR4 is widely expressed on target cells. Multiple splice variants of CXCR4 have been identified, and these variants have different expression patterns and cellular functions. The variants may also interact with each other during cellular responses to CXCL12. Therefore, further investigation of the functional roles of CXCR4 variants could contribute to the development of novel drug interventions.

Childhood Sexual Abuse and Cortical Thinning in Adults With Major Depressive Disorder

Jinyi Kim, Chanju Lee, Youbin Kang, Wooyoung Kang, Aram Kim, Woo-Suk Tae, Byung-Joo Ham, Jisoon Chang, Kyu-Man Han

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of different types of childhood abuse on the cortical thickness in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and healthy controls (HCs). The results showed that exposure to childhood sexual abuse (CSA) was significantly associated with cortical thinning in several brain regions involved in emotion regulation, indicating that CSA may have a stronger impact on the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.

Decreased cortical gyrification in major depressive disorder

Youbin Kang, Wooyoung Kang, Aram Kim, Woo-Suk Tae, Byung-Joo Ham, Kyu-Man Han

Summary: Early neurodevelopmental deviations, such as abnormal cortical folding patterns, are candidate biomarkers of major depressive disorder (MDD). This study investigated the association between MDD and the local gyrification index (LGI) in each cortical region, as well as the association between LGI and clinical characteristics of MDD. Patients with MDD showed decreased LGI values in multiple cortical regions compared to healthy controls, while within the MDD group, longer illness duration and recurrence were associated with increased gyrification in certain temporal and occipital regions.
