A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of varying nutrient density with constant ME: CP ratio on growing performance, carcass characteristics, and blood responses in 2 distinct broiler breeds of male chickens (Arbor Acres, a commercial line, and Beijing-You, a Chinese nonimproved line). Experimental diets were formulated with high, medium, or low nutrient densities for 3 growing phases. Starter diets (1 to 21 d) contained 23, 21, and 19% CP with 3,059, 2,793, and 2,527 kcal/kg of ME; grower diets (22 to 35 d) contained 21, 19, and 17% CP with 3,150, 2,850, and 2,550 kcal/kg of ME; and finisher diets (36 to 42 d for Arbor Acres and 36 to 91 d for Beijing-You) had 19, 17, and 15% CP with 3,230, 2,890, and 2,550 kcal/kg of ME. Male hatchlings (216 of each breed) were randomly assigned to 6 replicates of 12 birds in each treatment. Arbor Acres broilers had better (P < 0.001) BW gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and carcass yield, but had greater (P < 0.001) abdominal and carcass fat deposition. In both breeds, the higher nutrient density increased (P < 0.05) BW gain, protein efficiency ratio, and energy efficiency ratio while decreasing (P < 0.05) feed intake and FCR. The breed differences were increased for FCR, protein efficiency ratio, and energy efficiency ratio in the starter period and decreased for carcass chemical composition, respectively, by higher nutrient density. These findings indicate that 1) genetic improvement has a significant effect on broiler responses to dietary nutrient density, 2) performance differences between breeds are lessened with diets of low nutrient density, 3) carcass quality differences are less when birds were fed diets of high nutrient density, 4) carcass composition is hardly modified by nutrient density and both breeds exhibit similar metabolite responses to dietary concentrations, and 5) optimal diets are deduced for these breeds for the 3 growing phases.

Integrated analysis of the methylome and transcriptome of chickens with fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome

Xiaodong Tan, Ranran Liu, Yonghong Zhang, Xicai Wang, Jie Wang, Hailong Wang, Guiping Zhao, Maiqing Zheng, Jie Wen

Summary: In chickens with FLHS, a genome-wide dysregulated DNA methylation pattern was found, with hypo-methylated regions up- and down-stream of gene body. Genes related to lipogenesis and oxygenolysis showed up-regulated expression associated with down-regulated DNA methylation, while genes related to cellular junction and communication pathways exhibited inhibition with associated up-regulation of DNA methylation. These findings suggest that increased lipid accumulation and hepatocyte rupture are central pathways regulated by DNA methylation in FLHS chickens.

Paternal Dietary Methionine Supplementation Improves Carcass Traits and Meat Quality of Chicken Progeny

Mohamed Shafey Elsharkawy, Ying Chen, Ranran Liu, Xiaodong Tan, Wei Li, Ibrahim El-Wardany, Dongqin Zhao, Maiqing Zheng, Jie Wen, Guiping Zhao

Summary: The study shows that paternal dietary supplementation with 0.1% methionine can enhance offspring carcass traits and meat quality, such as increasing thigh muscle yield, reducing abdominal fat, and affecting meat quality indicators like pH value and color. Genes associated with meat quality also support these results. The findings suggest that the addition of 0.1% methionine to rooster diets can improve the carcass characteristics and meat quality of progeny.

Summary: The study analyzed the volatile organic compounds in chicken meat from 972 Chinese local chickens and identified various VOCs belonging to aldehyde, alcohol, and alkane classes. The breeds with the highest total aldehyde content were negatively correlated with the content of the other two classes, and their flavor could be distinguished by E-nose. Additionally, 9 common VOCs were shared by different breeds, and principal component analysis identified hexanal and 1-octen-3-ol as the major VOCs in each breed based on different criteria.

Association of Heterophil/Lymphocyte Ratio with Intestinal Barrier Function and Immune Response to Salmonella enteritidis Infection in Chicken

Mamadou Thiam, Astrid Lissette Barreto Sanchez, Jin Zhang, Maiqing Zheng, Jie Wen, Guiping Zhao, Qiao Wang

Summary: The H/L ratio is associated with intestinal immunity and could be a potential resistance indicator in chickens, with individuals displaying enhanced intestinal barrier function and immunity when having a low H/L ratio. The study suggests that selecting poultry with a low H/L ratio may improve survival, immune response, and resistance to Salmonella infection.

Liver Transcriptome Response to Heat Stress in Beijing You Chickens and Guang Ming Broilers

Astrid Lissette Barreto Sanchez, Qiao Wang, Mamadou Thiam, Zixuan Wang, Jin Zhang, Qi Zhang, Na Zhang, Qinghe Li, Jie Wen, Guiping Zhao

Summary: This study evaluated the heat tolerance and identified potential driver and hub genes related to heat stress in native and commercial chicken breeds through phenotypical, physiological, liver transcriptome comparative analysis and WGCNA. The results showed that native chickens were less affected by heat stress and had fewer differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to metabolism activity, while commercial chickens had pathways related to inflammatory reactions. CPT1A and ANGPTL4 were identified as candidate genes associated with heat stress in native chickens, while HSP90B1 and HSPA5 were identified in commercial chickens. TLR7, AR, and BAG3 genes were revealed as hub genes playing an important role in heat stress.

Prevalence, genomic characteristics, and pathogenicity of fowl adenovirus 2 in Southern China

Junqin Zhang, Zimin Xie, Yanlin Pan, Zuoxin Chen, Yunzhen Huang, Linlin Li, Jiawen Dong, Yong Xiang, Qi Zhai, Minhua Sun, Xingying Li, Shujian Huang, Ming Liao

Summary: In recent years, there has been an increase in the occurrence of fowl adenovirus 2 (FAdV-2) in China, posing a significant threat to the poultry industry. This study investigated the epidemiology, phylogenetic relationship, genomic characteristics, and pathogenicity of FAdV-2. The results showed that FAdV-2 was the most commonly detected serotype among various FAdV serotypes. Genetic analysis revealed that these FAdV-2 strains formed a distinct branch within the FAdV-D group and had a high nucleotide similarity with reference strains. Recombination analysis identified recombination events between FAdV-2 and FAdV-11 in some strains. Pathogenicity experiments demonstrated that a recombinant FAdV-2 strain caused a high mortality rate and more severe disease in chickens. These findings contribute to our understanding of FAdV-2 and provide a basis for vaccine development.
