Summary: Recent progress in manufacturing new functional cellulose-derived materials highlights the importance of reaction/process design and waste minimization over the renewable nature of these materials. Using reactive extrusion in EmimOAc/DMSO system, cellulose laurate with high reaction efficiency was synthesized. The process showed sustainability with high cellulose concentration, mild chemical modification, and easy recovery and reuse of EmimOAc.

Summary: This study identified and studied three ChsE enzymes in Mycolicibacterium neoaurum, comparing their functions with those from Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The results showed that ChsE4-ChsE5 could metabolize C27, C24, and C22 steroids in vivo, ChsE3 could metabolize C27 and C24 steroids in vivo, and ChsE1-ChsE2 could metabolize C27, C24, and C22 steroids in vivo. Additionally, the overexpression of ChsE led to the production of a new C22 steroid, 3-oxo-4,17-pregadiene-20-carboxylic acid methyl ester (PDCE). This study enhanced the understanding of steroid bioconversion pathways and provided a method for the production of novel C22 steroids.

Summary: A novel activation method using a hypervalent iodine(III) reagent and Selectfluor is developed for esters with a non-activated cyclopropyl moiety, resulting in the generation of acyl fluorides. These acyl fluorides, versatile synthetic intermediates, can be smoothly transformed into various carbonyl compounds, especially amides. This method can also be applied to selective activation of diester compounds.

Summary: Impregnation with PEMAc solutions followed by high temperature curing can achieve high fixation yields and maintain repulpability. The challenges in moving this technology to practical applications include identifying optimal laboratory pulp curing conditions and translating these conditions to industrial processes. A modeling tool based on wet tensile indices of grafted pulp sheets at different curing conditions can help predict the repulpability of larger-scale processes.

Summary: This study evaluates the use of potassium carbonate as a catalyst for the transesterification of cellulose dissolved in TBAF/DMSO. The optimal reaction conditions are identified through various tests and analyses. The results show that the use of a phosphate salt mixture catalyst and an increased catalyst ratio can enhance the acetyl content of the products. Additionally, the use of potassium carbonate as a catalyst leads to increased viscosity and solubility.
