Background To date, only influenza and RSV testing are recommended for respiratory viruses' detection in paediatric units. In this study, we described, according to seasons, ages and clinical units, the results obtained in children (< 15 years old) by multiplex-PCR (mPCR) tests allowing a quick and wide range detection of all respiratory viruses. These results were also compared with RSV specific detection. Methods All nasopharyngeal mPCR and RSV tests requested by clinicians in our French teaching hospitals group between 2011 and 2014 were retrospectively included. All repeated samples for the same children in the same month were discarded. Results Of the 381 mPCR tests (344 children) performed, 51.4% were positive. Positivity and viral co-infection rates were higher in the 6-36 months old strata (81% and 25%, p< 0.0001 and p = 0.04, respectively). Viral distribution showed strong variations across ages. During specific influenza epidemic periods, only 1/39 (2.5%) mPCR tests were positive for influenza and 19/39 (48.7%) for other viruses. During specific RSV epidemic periods, only 8/46 (17.4%) mPCR tests were positive for RSV and 14/46 (30.4%) for other viruses. 477/1529 (31.2%) of RSV immunochromatography-tests were positive. Among the negatives immunochromatography-test also explored by mPCR, 28/62 (31%) were positive for other respiratory viruses. Conclusion This study provides a wide description of respiratory viruses' distribution among children in hospital settings using mPCR over 3 years. It emphasizes the number of undiagnosed respiratory viruses according to the current diagnosis practice in France and gives a better picture of respiratory viruses identified in hospital settings by mPCR all over the year in France.

Summary: The study found that the use of protease inhibitor (PI) and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) based regimens did not show significant association with adverse pregnancy outcomes, except for nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) combinations. The number of integrase inhibitor (INI)-based combinations was too low to draw conclusions from.

Gestational weight gain in a migration context: are migrant women more at risk of inadequate or excessive weight gain during pregnancy?

Summary: Migrant women in France are at higher risk of inadequate GWG. Non-migrant women with foreign origins had increased risk of excessive GWG. Women born in Sub-Saharan Africa had increased risk of both inadequate and excessive GWG. Women with lower education and women who did not start pregnancy with a normal weight were less likely to gain adequately. Inadequate prenatal care was associated with inadequate GWG only among non-migrant women.

Summary: Undocumented migrants from sub-Saharan Africa in Europe have the highest risk of severe maternal morbidity among migrant subgroups. They are more likely to experience social isolation, linguistic barriers, and poor housing conditions compared to other migrants and non-migrants. Their interaction with maternity care services appears to be sub-optimal.

Infections in pregnancy: Recent therapeutic advances

L. Mandelbrot

Summary: Bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections have an impact on pregnant women and their fetuses, but treatment and preventive measures using anti-infective drugs can reduce the transmission of infections. Treatment for certain diseases has been well established, but new approaches are needed for detecting and treating emerging infection routes and diseases. Research on the use of anti-infectives during pregnancy is gaining attention, and systematic studies on the placental transfer and drug surveillance are necessary. Active screening policies and vaccination are the most effective methods for preventing infections.

Pregnant women's perceptions of the COVID-19 vaccine: A French survey

Summary: This study evaluated pregnant women's perceptions and acceptance of COVID-19 vaccination. The results showed that about one-third of pregnant women were willing to receive the vaccine, with the main reason for refusal being concerns about potential side effects on the fetus. Factors influencing acceptance included age, multiparity, discussion with healthcare providers, and acceptance of the influenza vaccine.

Summary: This study compares baseline characteristics and in-hospital outcomes of patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection with the Delta variant versus the Omicron variant in the emergency department. The results show that patients infected with the Omicron variant were younger, had a lower rate of obesity, were more vaccinated, had a lower rate of dyspnea, and had a higher rate of discharge home from the ED. Compared with Delta, Omicron infection was independently associated with a lower risk for ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, and in-hospital mortality.

Summary: LCMV is a rare congenital infection that can result in high mortality and morbidity. This article reviews the various morphological abnormalities associated with congenital LCMV infection, including brain abnormalities such as chorioretinitis, hydrocephaly, microcephaly, ventriculomegaly, and periventricular calcifications. Other extracerebral abnormalities such as small for gestational age, ascites, cardiomegaly, and anemia were also observed. Antenatal ultrasound examination could detect major cerebral abnormalities in 70% of cases. Congenital LCMV infection is associated with a significant mortality rate and survivors often suffer from severe neurological sequelae.

Risk Factors for Anal Continence Impairment Following a Second Delivery after a First Traumatic Delivery: A Prospective Cohort Study

Summary: Postpartum anal incontinence is common. Follow-up is advised after a first delivery with perineal trauma to reduce the risk of anal incontinence. Endoanal sonography may be considered to evaluate the sphincter and discuss cesarean section for the second delivery. Risk factors for anal continence impairment after the second delivery were the presence of urinary incontinence and the combined use of instruments and episiotomy. Sphincter rupture diagnosed through endoanal sonography was not associated with continence impairment after the second delivery.
