Summary: This observational study compared the antibody response between unvaccinated infected children and adults. The study found that unvaccinated infected children mount a more potent and sustained antibody response compared to adults, which is further increased after vaccination. Further studies are needed to optimize vaccination strategies for children.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of inactivated vaccines against the Delta and Omicron variants. The results showed that two-dose vaccination reduced pneumonia, disease severity, and the duration of viral shedding in Delta cases, while two doses were insufficient for Omicron and booster vaccination should be prioritized.

Summary: This study investigates the survivability of Delta and Omicron variants of concern in wastewater and suggests that the risks of fecal-aerosol transmission are low. However, the high transmissibility of the variants cautions against disregarding the potential for fecal-aerosol transmission of COVID-19.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the prevalence of wild-type (WT) SARS-CoV-2 and Delta and Omicron variants in Jalisco State, Mexico, from 2021 to 2022, and evaluate the possible association of these variants with clinical manifestations of COVID-19. The results showed that the Omicron variant caused the biggest outbreak in Jalisco, but with a less severe form than Delta and WT.

Summary: This study investigated the cellular and humoral immune responses of hospitalized COVID-19 patients during the Delta and Omicron infection waves. The results showed that the Omicron-BA.5 variant had a significant impact on neutralizing antibodies, while Delta and Omicron-BA.1 infections boosted the humoral immunity in double-vaccinated patients. Despite breakthrough infection with the BA.5 variant, these patients may still be vulnerable to reinfection with BA.5 or other newly emerging variants of concern.

Summary: According to data from the National COVID-19 Database in Qatar, Omicron variant infection causes milder disease in children/adolescents compared to Delta variant infection, as reflected by lower hospitalization rates and the need for intensive care unit (ICU) care or mechanical ventilation. Children aged 6 to <18 also have less severe disease compared to those younger than 6 years old.

Summary: The world is still threatened by SARS-CoV-2, as the virus has undergone mutations leading to the emergence of variant strains that affect transmission capacity, risk profiles, and symptoms. Delta and Omicron are two variants of concern with different mutation types and threats to humans. This review explores the pathogenicity, mutations, treatments, and impact on vaccine efficacy of the Delta and Omicron variants.

Summary: The study aimed to verify the relationship between the Delta and Omicron variants, viral load, and symptoms in individuals with COVID-19. The results showed a gradual replacement of the Delta variant by the Omicron variant during the study period. Delta-infected individuals had a higher prevalence of symptoms, such as coryza, olfactory and taste disturbances, headache, and myalgia. There was no association between viral load and the analyzed variants.

Summary: This study examines the organizational and managerial tools implemented in 5 academic EDs in a heavily affected region in France during the COVID-19 pandemic. The EDs focused on early detection, isolation measures, and tailored strategies based on the real-time PCR COVID-19 positivity rate. The crisis highlighted hospitals' adaptability and coordination in reallocating resources and optimizing patient pathways.

Summary: This population surveillance study provides data on the incidence, causative organisms, and antibiotic susceptibilities of early-onset sepsis in infants born at ≥34 weeks' gestation. The study highlights the higher frequency of group B Streptococcus (GBS) compared to Escherichia coli (E. coli) in term infants, and the significantly elevated risk of early-onset sepsis in late preterm infants due to E. coli. The findings suggest the need for improvement in the prevention of GBS early-onset sepsis and empiric antibiotic treatment of sepsis.

Summary: Recent events highlight the serious threat posed by organophosphorus nerve agents (OPNAs). Inhibition of cholinesterase by OPNAs leads to the accumulation of acetylcholine, causing a cholinergic crisis and potential death. Evaluating the effectiveness of new medical countermeasures against OPNAs relies on translational animal models. We have developed a swine model of percutaneous VX intoxication and a simple enzymatic method to measure plasmatic VX concentrations over time. This method shows promise for assessing the efficacy of medical countermeasures against OPNAs.

Summary: We conducted a retrospective observational study to describe the epidemiology of invasive fungal infections (IFIs) and outcomes in hospitalized patients. A total of 367 IFIs were diagnosed, with candidemia and invasive aspergillosis being the most common types. Corticosteroid use and prior viral infection were identified as the main risk factors. The overall mortality rate at 12 weeks was 32.2%.

Summary: This study analyzed the evolution of BK virus genotypes and the humoral response against BK virus in kidney transplant recipients with BK virus associated nephropathy. The results showed that BK virus replicated and genetically evolved following transplantation, and the level of anti-BK-VP1 antibodies also increased. The study suggests that the BK virus genotype from the donor may not be responsible for the pathogenesis of BK virus associated nephropathy in some patients.

Summary: Convergent evolution of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.2, BA.4, and BA.5 lineages have led to the emergence of several new subvariants, including BA.2.75.2, BA.4.6, and BQ.1.1. These subvariants carry additional mutations in the spike protein, potentially increasing transmissibility and evading immune responses. The study found that the efficacy of monoclonal antibodies and serum from vaccinated individuals against these subvariants varies.

Summary: Since January 2022, an increase in cases of acute hepatitis of unknown cause in children has been reported in several countries, predominantly caused by adenovirus species F type 41 (HAdV-F41) infection. This study describes HAdV-F41 infections in adult HSCT recipients in two French hospitals since January 2022. All four patients had diarrhea and liver cytolysis at the time of infection diagnosis. HAdV viremia was observed in three patients, but no disseminated disease was reported. Analysis of HAdV whole genome sequencing and metagenomics characterization showed similar lineage (2b) of the identified strains.
