Thalia geniculata L. (Marantaceae) is an African medicinal plant traditionally used in Benin to treat malaria and other parasitic diseases. There is little ethnobotanical and almost no chemical information available for this species. The phytochemical analysis of the aerial parts of the plant led to the isolation of five compounds, identified as sitoindoside I [beta-sitosterol-(6-O-hexadeca-noyl)-3-O-beta-D-glucoside] (1), daucosterol beta-sitosterol-3-O-beta-D-glucoside (2), stigmasterol (3), P-sitosterol (4), and geranylfarnesol (5). The structural elucidation was achieved using spectrometric methods and by comparison with the literature. Biological activity was evaluated against Plasmodium falciparum, Trypanosoma rhodesiense, Trypanosoma cruzi, and Leishmania donovani. Geranylfarnesol (5) showed significant antiprotozoal activity against P. falciparum and L. donovani, with IC50 values of 12.7 and 13.2 mu M, respectively.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of selected plant species from the Amazon region on Leishmania parasites and related pathophysiological aspects. The results showed that antiparasitic activity is not the only factor for antileishmanial evaluation. Furthermore, some species exhibited antifungal activity and immunomodulatory effects, while none of them had wound healing properties.

Summary: This study explores the combination of metals and plants in ancient remedies and provides evidence for their potential therapeutic effects. By analyzing four medical formularies from the 9-12th century, the researchers discovered that these remedies contained a high proportion of metals and identified their specific roles in combating infections and promoting wound healing. The findings highlight the knowledge and skills of ancient physicians in manipulating metals for therapeutic purposes.

Summary: Millions of people in Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa are at risk of trypanosomatid infections. Researchers have identified a class of cyanotriazoles (CTs) that have potent trypanocidal activity and can potentially be used for the treatment of Chagas disease and human African trypanosomiasis. These CT compounds act by selectively and irreversibly inhibiting trypanosomal topoisomerase II and stabilizing DNA:enzyme cleavage complexes.
