The existence of a mirror world holding a copy of our ordinary particle spectrum could lead to oscillations between the neutron (n) and its mirror partner (n'). Such oscillations could manifest themselves in storage experiments with ultracold neutrons whose storage lifetime would depend on the applied magnetic field. Here, extended details and measurements from the first dedicated experimental search for nn' oscillations published in [G. Ban, K. Bodek, M. Daum, R. Henneck, S. Heule, M. Kasprzak, N. Khomutov, K. Kirch, S. Kistryn, A. Knecht, P. Knowles, M. Kuzniak, T. Lefort, A. Mtchedlishvili, O. Naviliat-Cuncic, C. Plonka, G. Quemener, M. Rebetez, D. Rebreyend, S. Roccia, G. Rogel, M. Tur, A. Weis, J. Zejma, G. Zsigmond, Direct experimental limit on neutron mirror-neutron oscillations, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99 (2007) 1616031 will be presented, focussing on a possible dependence of the UCN counts on the magnetic field and its direction. However, at present no significant change in the averaged UCN counts with respect to the applied magnetic field has been found. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Summary: We introduce two novel beam monitors designed for current PSI muon beams, which can be upgraded for the High Intensity Muon Beam (HIMB) project beamlines: the scintillating fibre (SciFi) detector, consisting of a grid of scintillating fibres coupled to SiPMs, and the MatriX detector, composed of a matrix of plastic scintillators coupled to SiPMs, both capable of particle identification. The segmented detectors are advantageous for withstanding high beam rates and performing total beam rate measurements. Additionally, the use of SiPM as a photosensor allows operation in high magnetic field environments (up to 1.25 T). Both detectors have been tested at PSI and have demonstrated good performance at continuous beam rates up to 108 mu+/s.

Summary: The PDH technique is commonly used to stabilize the frequency of a laser to a stable optical resonator or vice versa. We propose an enhanced version of this technique that offers an infinite dynamic range, ensuring correct lock even after significant perturbations. By phase modulating the seed laser at a frequency corresponding to half the resonator's free spectral range, we eliminate the stable but off-resonant lock points present in conventional PDH error signals. We experimentally verify the effectiveness of our scheme using an injection-seeded Yb:YAG thin-disk laser and provide an analytical formulation for the PDH error signal with arbitrary modulation frequencies.

Summary: In this study, we updated the analysis of τ lepton decays into a light charged lepton and a vector meson using data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB collider. No significant excess of signal events was observed, and thus upper limits were set on the τ -> lV(0) branching fractions at the 90% credibility level, ranging from (1.7- 4.3) x 10(-8). These limits show an average improvement of 30% compared to previous results.

Summary: In this work, we present the development of highly reflective single-phase argon chambers capable of displaying light yields up to 32 photo-electrons per keV. SiPM-based readouts are becoming the standard for light detection in particle detectors, however, the contributions of noise detection such as the dark rate, cross-talk, and after-pulsing (AP) may significantly impact their performance. Furthermore, we provide a parametrization of the optical cross-talk for the FBK NUV-HD-Cryo SiPMs at 87 K that can be extended to future detectors with tailored optical simulations.

Summary: In this study, we measured the lifetime of the D-s(+) meson using data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider. By fitting the decay-time distribution of D-s(+)->phi pi+ decays, we determined that the lifetime of the D-s(+) meson is tau(+)(Ds)=(499.5 +/- 1.7 +/- 0.9) fs, with improved precision compared to previous measurements.

Summary: This study presents the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions of inclusive semileptonic B-meson decays, which is a precision test of electron-muon universality. The results obtained using data collected by the Belle II detector show that the measured ratio is in agreement with the standard-model expectation, making it the most precise lepton-universality test of its kind.

Summary: We present a study of the decays A+c -pK0SK0S and A+c -pK0St7 and measure their branching fractions relative to A+c -pK0S. The absolute branching fractions are also calculated by combining with the world average. The mode A+c -pK0 SK0S is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of > 10 sigma, and the branching fraction of A+c -pK0St7 is found to be consistent with the world average with improved precision.

Characterization of ultracold neutron production in thin solid deuterium films at the PSI Ultracold Neutron source

G. Bison, B. Blau, W. Chen, P. -j. Chiu, M. Daum, C. B. Doorenbos, N. Hild, K. Kirch, V. Kletzl, B. Lauss, D. Pais, I. Rienacker, D. Ries, P. Schmidt-Wellenburg, V. Talanov, G. Zsigmond

Summary: In this study, we determined the production rate of ultracold neutrons (UCN) through superthermal conversion in a solid deuterium (sD2) moderator at the UCN source at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). We found that a low amount of deuterium deposited on the moderator surfaces had a negligible effect on the UCN yield. By comparing calculated UCN yield with measurements, we confirmed our results and provided an absolute characterization of UCN production and transport in the source.

Reduction of light output of plastic scintillator tiles during irradiation at cold temperatures and in low-oxygen environments

B. Kronheim, A. Belloni, T. K. Edberg, S. C. Eno, C. Howe, C. Palmer, C. Papageorgakis, M. Paranjpe, S. Sriram

Summary: This paper presents measurements of the relative decrease of light output during irradiation of small plastic scintillator tiles read out by silicon photomultipliers. The study found substantial temporary damage during low-temperature irradiation, regardless of oxygen concentration and wrapping material. The wrapping material had an impact on the relative light loss, with the 3M(TM) Enhanced Specular Reflector Film showing the largest loss. The light loss was less at warmer temperatures and similar to that in standard atmosphere with 3% oxygen concentration. Evidence of a plateau in the radical density was seen for the data at 0 degrees C.
