Summary: The root of Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bunge is used in Chinese medicine for its immunomodulating activities. Recent studies have shown that it has beneficial effects on allergic diseases. This study investigated the anti-inflammatory properties of a commercial extract of A. membranaceus and its therapeutic application in asthma. The extract was found to inhibit inflammation and improve lung function, making it a potential treatment option for asthma.

Summary: The Astragalus membranaceus polysaccharide (APS4) shows direct cytotoxicity on various cancer cells and has potential therapeutic effects on solid tumors. Through experiments on S180 tumor-bearing mice, it was found that APS4 can regulate the immune system, inhibit solid tumor growth, and promote apoptosis of tumor cells.

Summary: The study found that the use of Astragalus membranaceus (AM) can reduce the ratio of calcium oxalate crystal formation in the Drosophila Malpighian tubules and significantly improve the reduction of lifespan caused by ethylene glycol (EG). However, AM cannot directly dissolve pre-existing calcium oxalate crystals in the Drosophila Malpighian tubules.

Summary: The study screened traditionally used botanicals and discovered that a combination of Astragalus membranaceus and Vaccaria hispanica has strong synergic anti-cancer effects on cancer cells. The combination interferes with the cell cycle of cancer cells, causing G2/M phase accumulation and ultimately leading to apoptosis. Further research is needed to validate its generalizability and understand its mechanism of action.

Summary: This study aims to introduce and discuss the specific mechanism of action of Astragalus membranaceus in the treatment of peritoneal metastasis, providing a new perspective for treatment and further research. It was found that Astragalus membranaceus contains polysaccharides, saponins, and flavonoids as its main bioactive components, which have extensive effects on cancer. However, due to the lack of reliable in vivo experiments, clinical data, and evidence of clinical efficacy, its use is not currently recommended.

Summary: Intranasal administration of Astragalus membranaceus polysaccharides (APS) activated mucosal immune cell populations and inhibited pulmonary metastatic melanoma in mice by stimulating NK cells and T cells in the mesenteric lymph nodes. The combination treatment of APS with anti-PD-L1 antibody showed a synergistic effect in inhibiting melanoma cell infiltration, with NK cells and CD8 T cells playing a critical role in mediating the anti-cancer immunity. These findings suggest that APS could serve as a topical mucosal adjuvant to enhance the anti-cancer effect of immune checkpoint inhibitors.

Summary: In this study, two homogeneous polysaccharides (APS-A1 and APS-B1) were isolated from Astragalus membranaceus and their chemical structures were characterized. APS-A1 had a 1,4-alpha-D-Glcp backbone with a 1,4,6-alpha-D-Glcp branch every ten residues, while APS-B1 was a heteropolysaccharide composed of glucose, galactose, and arabinose. Bioactivity assays showed that both APS-A1 and APS-B1 exhibited potential anti-inflammatory activity.

Summary: AM and PG are both able to enhance immune system functions, including increased spleen and thymus index, enhanced proliferation of splenic lymphocytes, and increased cytotoxic activity of NK cells. Furthermore, through analysis of potential bioactive compounds, enzyme actions, and pathways, the different molecular mechanisms of AM and PG on immune regulation were investigated.

Summary: The intensive culturing of hybrid yellow catfish has increased their mortality. Astragalus membranaceus, used as an immune stimulant and antioxidant, was mixed with the fish diet. The study analyzed the spleen transcriptome data and relative percentage survival to understand the function of A. membranaceus in the defense against Aeromonas hydrophila. The results showed differentially expressed genes in the spleen and improved survival rates for the fish challenged with A. hydrophila.

Summary: In this study, a macrophage migration inhibitory factor (TroMIF) was identified from golden pompano and its function was analyzed. TroMIF showed high similarity with other known MIF sequences and was most closely related to large yellow croaker. TroMIF was highly expressed in the liver and head kidney and its expression was up-regulated after E. tarda infection. In vitro experiments showed that rTroMIF could inhibit the migration of lymphocytes and macrophages and enhance macrophage phagocytic activity. Furthermore, rTroMIF increased the expression levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and had enzymatic redox activity. Overexpression of TroMIF enhanced the ability to resist E. tarda infection, while knockdown of TroMIF expression increased the bacterial load. These results suggest that TroMIF plays an important role in antibacterial immunity.
