All Triportheus species show the conserved diploid number of 52 chromosomes and a ZZ/ZW sex chromosome system. Previous studies conducted on Triportheus nematurus reported a syntenical location of 18S and 5S sites on this species, in addition to some indications that this condition could be shared by other Triportheus species, possibly constituting a synapomorphy for this genus. In the present study, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) experiments were performed in seven Triportheus species in view of a comparative analysis of the distribution of the 18S and 5S ribosomal DNAs on the chromosomes. The double-FISH experiments have showed that the synteny of the 18S and 5S rDNA genes is not a synapomorphy for the genus, since it is not present in all the species investigated, although it is present in most of them. The findings suggest that the syntenical location of the ribosomal genes is an ancestral trait in Triportheus, which was changed during the course of evolution of this group. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Evolution of a Multiple Sex-Chromosome System by Three-Sequential Translocations among Potential Sex-Chromosomes in the Taiwanese Frog Odorrana swinhoana

Ikuo Miura, Foyez Shams, Si-Min Lin, Marcelo de Bello Cioffi, Thomas Liehr, Ahmed Al-Rikabi, Chiao Kuwana, Kornsorn Srikulnath, Yuya Higaki, Tariq Ezaz

Summary: Translocations between sex chromosomes and autosomes can generate multiple sex chromosome systems. In a Taiwanese brown frog, a unique multiple sex chromosome system was discovered, involving three different chromosome pairs with translocations occurring among potential sex-determining chromosomes, including orthologs of sex-determining genes in various vertebrates. This rare case suggests sex-specific, nonrandom translocations, shedding light on the evolutionary significance of multiple sex chromosome systems.

Karyotype Evolution and Genomic Organization of Repetitive DNAs in the Saffron Finch, Sicalis flaveola (Passeriformes, Aves)

Rafael Kretschmer, Benilson Silva Rodrigues, Suziane Alves Barcellos, Alice Lemos Costa, Marcelo de Bello Cioffi, Analia del Valle Garnero, Ricardo Jose Gunski, Edivaldo Herculano Correa de Oliveira, Darren K. Griffin

Summary: Detailed chromosome studies of the Saffron finch revealed a high conservation of chromosomes, with SSR mainly accumulating in microchromosomes and the short arms of Z chromosome. Comparisons with other avian species provided insights into the chromosome organization and evolution of the Saffron finch genome. The contrasting rates of intrachromosomal changes and the role of SSR accumulation in karyotype reorganization were highlighted.

Multiple sex chromosomes in teleost fishes from a cytogenetic perspective: state of the art and future challenges

Alexandr Sember, Petr Nguyen, Manolo F. Perez, Marie Altmanova, Petr Rab, Marcelo de Bello Cioffi

Summary: This review provides insights into the characteristics and evolutionary trends of multiple sex chromosome systems in teleost fishes, pointing out the predominance of male-heterogametic systems and the possible constraints on sex chromosome turnover in female-heterogametic systems. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of broader inter-population sampling in understanding the evolution of multiple sex chromosomes in fishes.

Summary: This study investigated the composition and role of satellite DNA (satDNA) in the evolution of sex chromosomes in Triportheus species. The results revealed differences in satDNA accumulation on the Z chromosome among different species and different homogenization rates between the Z and W chromosomes. The most abundant satDNA family was found to be localized in the centromeres and potentially played a role in centromere evolution.

Evolutionary Dynamics of Two Classes of Repetitive DNA in the Genomes of Two Species of Elopiformes (Teleostei, Elopomorpha)

Rodrigo Petry Correa de Sousa, Carolina Pinheiro Vasconcelos, Nayara Furtado do Rosario, Aldemir Branco De Oliveira-Filho, Edivaldo Herculano Correa de Oliveira, Marcelo de Bello Cioffi, Marcelo Vallinoto, Glaucia Caroline Silva-Oliveira

Summary: By analyzing the karyotype and distribution of repetitive DNA in two Elopiformes species, the study found that microsatellite sequences are primarily associated with heterochromatin and may contribute to chromosome structure, while transposable elements have different distributions in the two species, indicating potential interspecific differences in their function. Comparative genome mapping provides new insights into the structure and organization of repetitive sequences in the Elopiformes genome.

Summary: The study combined classical and molecular cytogenetic analyses to investigate the karyotypes of five Pyrrhulina species. It found significant differences in chromosome numbers and positions among the species, while repetitive DNA content remained relatively consistent. The results suggest that karyotype differentiation in Pyrrhulina is primarily driven by structural rearrangements.

Integrating Cytogenetics and Population Genomics: Allopatry and Neo-Sex Chromosomes May Have Shaped the Genetic Divergence in the Erythrinus erythrinus Species Complex (Teleostei, Characiformes)

Fernando H. S. de Souza, Francisco de M. C. Sassi, Pedro H. N. Ferreira, Luiz A. C. Bertollo, Tariq Ezaz, Thomas Liehr, Manolo F. Perez, Marcelo B. Cioffi

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between the evolution of multiple sex chromosomes together with allopatry and genetic diversity and speciation in the fish species Erythrinus erythrinus. The presence of multiple sex chromosomes was hypothesized to contribute to genetic differentiation and potentially accelerate speciation. The results showed high genetic differentiation among populations, with long-distance allopatry as the main agent of genetic divergence.
