The synthesis and mesomorphic properties of a novel series of cholesterol and 4-(trans-4-n-hexylcyclo-hexyl) benzoic acid containing dimesogenic compounds linked with the central alkylene spacers through two ester bonds, in which the spacer's lengths were 4 and 5 methylenes, were reported. Their chemical structure and mesomorphic properties were characterized by FT-IR, Mass, H-1 NMR, polarizing optical microscopy, DSC techniques and their average viscosity and helical twisting power (HTP) in host liquid crystal were also measured. The present compounds were cholesteric liquid crystals which with lower phase transition temperature over a wide range and their average viscosity and HTP are similar to cholesteryl nonarroate.
