A facile approach for the fabrication of ZnO hollow nanospheres and noble-metal/ZnO jingle bell shaped hollow nanospheres was reported. Zn2+ was adsorbed on the surface of carbon nanospheres template to form core/shell structure in solution, and subsequent calcination these core/shell composite particles would lead to the formation of ZnO hollow nanospheres. By using carbon nanospheres containing metal nanoparticle cores as template instead of carbon nanospheres, a fantastic structure, jingle bell shaped hollow nanospheres with the ZnO-shell and the noble-metal-cores, was successfully synthesized. The average diameter of ZnO hollow nanospheres and jingle bell shaped hollow nanospheres could be modulated by using templates of different size. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
