Summary: Accurate determination of protein structure at interfaces is critical for understanding protein interactions, and VSFG spectroscopy is often used for this purpose. However, our study shows that the peaks shifts observed in conventional VSFG spectra upon changing the solution pH are actually due to nonresonant contributions. Therefore, HD-VSFG measurements are necessary for drawing unambiguous conclusions about structural changes in biomolecules.

Summary: Introduced seed dispersers such as the non-native earthworm Lumbricus terrestris can impact native plant establishment by protecting seeds from rodent predation. The competitive outcome between earthworms and mice for seeds is influenced by environmental factors, with earthworms gaining more seeds under warmer, wetter conditions and mice obtaining more seeds under colder, drier conditions. The data suggest that earthworms can act mutualistically with native plants by caching seeds in diverse environments, and the interactions among the environment and competing seed predators determine the fate of seed pools.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of manipulating the center of pressure on the kinetics and kinematics of human walking and its influence on the virtual pivot point (VPP). The results showed that the majority of participants exhibited a VPP in various conditions, with the exception of one participant during handstand walking. There were no significant differences in the horizontal and vertical position of the VPP between the conditions.

Summary: The exceptional ion release and storage ability of biological ion channels have attracted significant attention for various life activities. This study presented the ion transport behavior in a vertically-oriented three-sectional Ti3C2Tx membrane with asymmetric charge distribution. By grafting silane molecules onto the surface, the surface charge polarity of the Ti3C2Tx nanosheet was changed, leading to a diode-like ion transport property in the heterogenous membrane. Numerical simulations based on PNP equations showed that the directional ion diffusion was attributed to ion accumulation and depletion in the nanochannels under different potential biases. The heterogenous membrane also showed potential in desalination and ion storage applications.

Summary: This study presents a rapid and convenient electrochemical method for highly sensitive detection of uric acid (UA) by integrating vertically-ordered mesoporous silica film bearing amino groups (NH2-VMSF) and three-dimensional graphene-carbon nanotubes (3DG@CNT) composite film. The NH2-VMSF/3DG@CNT/GCE electrode exhibited outstanding analytical performance with a wide linear range, high sensitivity, and low limit of detection. Direct analysis of UA in human serum and urine samples was also achieved with satisfactory recoveries.

Summary: Extending ionic conductivity is essential for high-electrochemical performance in fuel cell technology. In this study, semiconductor-oxide materials were introduced to enhance ionic conduction, and heterostructure formation by modulating energy bands was used as an electrolyte in fuel cell devices. The SFT-SnO2 heterojunction exhibited excellent ionic conductivity, high power-output, and durability, indicating its potential for semiconductor-based fuel cell technology.

Summary: Monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (ML-TMDs) have the potential to unlock novel photonic and chemical technologies. However, there have been contradictory explanations for how TMD absorption spectra change with carrier concentration, fluence, and time. This study proposes that the broadening and shifting of the band-edge features in optical spectra are caused by the formation of negative trions. Experimental electrochemical data is used to fit an ab initio based, many-body model, providing a global description of the potential-dependent linear absorption data.

Summary: The control of acidity in the assembly of biopolymers is crucial for various applications. The miniaturization of a device containing multiplexed microreactors enables independent electrochemical control of acidity in very small volumes, with a large acidity range and high accuracy. The achieved performance in acidity control, miniaturization, and multiplexing paves the way for combinatorial chemistry through pH and acidity-controlled reactions.

Summary: CO2 biomethanisation is a promising technology for reducing greenhouse gas emissions through sustainable use of organic feedstocks. However, the depletion of CO2 during the reaction leading to pH increase can cause instability and digestion failure. This study validates predictive equations for managing H-2 addition in anaerobic digesters and provides coefficient values for some organic feedstocks.

Summary: The research reveals the stratification heterogeneity of Ti3C2Tx MXene at high temperatures, showing different reactions between layers, in which one group of layers shrinks as water deintercalates, while the other group remains unchanged in interlayer spacing. This suggests that intercalants act as guest pillaring agents in stabilizing layers at elevated temperatures.

Summary: We used an improved version of our hyphenated analysis technique, flow injection electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with inductively coupled optical emission spectroscopy (FI-EQCM-ICP-OES), to investigate the electroprecipitation of lanthanum and neodymium from flowing solutions. The improved technique has two independent flow injection circuits, allowing different conditions for electrochemical precipitation and quick stripping. Lanthanum or neodymium ions were injected into a carrier stream and deposited onto an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM), and the deposits were subsequently stripped and analyzed using an ICP-OES. We found that using acidic solutions without supporting electrolyte leads to an increase in the amount of lanthanum detected.
