BACKGROUND: Citrus fruits have a beneficial effect on human health because of their nutritional and antioxidant properties, and their consumption is associated with a decrease in the incidence of cardiovascular disease and reduced risk of certain cancers. Seven cultivars of mandarin and orange species from the Mediterranean area, grafted onto different rootstocks (Cleopatra mandarin and Troyer citrange), have been analysed. The influence of the rootstock on the content of bioactive compounds is discussed. RESULTS: In all citrus cultivars and rootstocks studied, hesperidin and narirutin flavonoids were the main flavanone glycosides identified, beta-cryptoxanthin and violaxanthin the most abundant carotenoids, limonene was the most abundant essential oil, calcium and potassium were the dominant macronutrients and, among the micronutrients, iron and boron represented the highest proportions. CONCLUSION: We have been found clear differences in the content of bioactive compounds for the different groups, in agreement with the Citrus classification. Although both mandarin and orange varieties showed similar tendencies concerning the majority of bioactive constituents, the proportion of the individual nutrients ranged among different cultivars and our results indicated differences between rootstocks although it would be necessary to carry out more analyses, and with the new rootstocks obtained from different breeding programmes, to elucidate conclusive values. Effect of Rootstock on Citrus Fruit Quality: A Review

Julia Morales Alfaro, Almudena Bermejo, Pilar Navarro, Ana Quinones, Alejandra Salvador

Summary: Citrus rootstocks have a significant impact on fruit quality, including physico-chemical parameters, nutritional compounds, and physiological disorders. External factors such as the interaction between rootstock and scion, water uptake capacity of roots, and modification of photosynthetic rate affect fruit quality.

Melatonin in Brassicaceae: Role in Postharvest and Interesting Phytochemicals

Josefa Hernandez-Ruiz, Domingo Ruiz-Cano, Manuela Giraldo-Acosta, Antonio Cano, Marino B. Arnao

Summary: Brassicaceae plants, with their wide variety and nutritional qualities, have gained great interest due to their high content of glucosinolates, which have demonstrated anti-oncogenic properties. This paper examines the most relevant studies on Brassicaceae plants related to food and melatonin, particularly focusing on the role of melatonin in seedling growth and postharvest preservation of cabbage, rapeseed, and broccoli. The application of melatonin has shown to extend the shelf life of fresh-cut broccoli while maintaining optimal visual and nutritional parameters.

Summary: Melatonin, a plant regulatory molecule, shows potential as a biostimulator and protector against abiotic and biotic stressors. In this study, the protective effect of melatonin on mungbean seedlings treated with copper oxychloride fungicide was investigated. Melatonin improved growth, protected photosynthetic pigments, reduced membrane damage, and affected the hormonal profile of the seedlings.

Mapping of the Classical Mutation rosette Highlights a Role for Calcium in Wound-Induced Rooting

Abelardo Modrego, Taras Pasternak, Moutasem Omary, Alfonso Albacete, Antonio Cano, Jose Manuel Perez-Perez, Idan Efroni

Summary: The removal of the root system triggers the formation of new roots from the remaining shoot, a process primarily regulated by the phytohormone auxin. In this study, the tomato mutation rosette (ro) was found to have a deficiency in shoot-borne root formation and reduced auxin transport rates. The ro gene was identified as the tomato ortholog of BIG and UBR4/p600 genes, which are known to regulate auxin transport in Arabidopsis thaliana and calcium homeostasis in mammals. The study suggests that the RO/BIG protein maintains auxin flow by stabilizing the membrane localization of the auxin transporter PIN1, potentially through attenuating the inhibitory effect of calcium on cytoplasmic streaming.

Summary: ABTS is a widely used compound for determining the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of various samples. It can be used in different determination methodologies, such as automated photometric measures and liquid chromatographic separation. The ABTS/TAC method allows for the determination of both hydrophilic and lipophilic antioxidant activity, providing total antioxidant activity values. This review highlights the major achievements and applications of the ABTS/TAC method.
