Summary: Binge drinking has increased among older men in the United States while it has remained stable among older women. Although tobacco and cannabis use is associated with an increased risk of binge drinking among both older men and women, demographic correlates tend to differ by sex.

Summary: The study found that between 2002 and 2018, disapproval of cannabis decreased and cannabis use increased among alcohol abstainers, non-binge drinkers, and binge drinkers. Among drinkers, the impact of disapproval on cannabis use weakened, while this trend was not observed among abstainers.

Summary: Alcohol use, binge drinking, and alcohol use disorders are on the rise among older adults in the US, especially among women, those who use other substances, and those who are relatively healthy in older age. This commentary discusses the potential drivers of these increases, including alcohol marketing, healthier aging, and increased financial stress. The need for more resources and attention towards older adult drinking is becoming increasingly urgent, as alcohol-related deaths among older adults in the United States are escalating.

Summary: This study found a high prevalence of heavy drinking and binge drinking behaviors among older Brazilians, particularly among males, those with higher education, and in the younger age groups. All drinking patterns were associated with similar factors, including being male, younger, having higher education, tobacco smoking, and falls. Additionally, a higher number of chronic diseases was linked to lower prevalence of current drinking and binge drinking.

Summary: Excessive drinking, particularly binge drinking, is a significant cause of death in the U.S. This study identified several risk factors for binge drinking, including demographic characteristics such as age, sex, and income, as well as lifestyle factors like smokeless tobacco use and smoking/e-cigarette use. It is essential to develop interventions targeting these risk factors to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with binge drinking.

Summary: This study aims to identify homogeneous drinking groups and develop a new tool to assess the severity of binge drinking regardless of gender. Through clustering analysis and a partial proportional odds model, key factors of drinking and behavior were identified, and homogeneous drinking groups were created. The results show a progressive severity in the drinking pattern, and frequency of drinking behavior and drunkenness are central features of binge drinking.

Summary: Studies in Mexico found that binge drinking is associated with the density of alcohol-selling outlets and alcohol prices, with living in areas with more outlets associated with higher binge drinking risk, and living in states with lower prices associated with more frequent binge drinking. Implementing spatial restrictions to alcohol-selling outlets could help reduce binge drinking along with strong fiscal policies.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of the PartyWise intervention in increasing awareness of sex differences in the risks of binge drinking among underage women. The results showed that intervention recipients were more knowledgeable about sex-based differences in alcohol risks and had a better understanding of binge drinking. Although there was no difference in the rates of binge drinking in the past month between groups, intervention recipients were less likely to report binge drinking multiple times in the past 30 days.

Summary: Binge alcohol consumption among adolescents can have long-lasting effects on the neural networks in NAc and stress processing, leading to decreased sensitivity to positive stimuli and dysfunctional stress-axis functionality. Summary: Adolescence is a critical stage of brain development that can be influenced by external factors like drugs and alcohol. Binge drinking, which is common among teenagers and young adults, has been linked to behavioral changes and cognitive impairments. This article explores the factors leading to adolescent binge drinking, discusses brain maturation during adolescence, and evaluates the effects of alcohol consumption on brain structure and function. Understanding these effects can assist in the development of therapeutic interventions to mitigate the harmful impact of alcohol on the adolescent brain.

Summary: This study in Zambia revealed that daily tobacco smoking was more prevalent among men, older individuals, and those with lower levels of education, while binge drinking was more common among men and urban residents. There is a necessity to reshape and refine preventive and control interventions for tobacco smoking and binge drinking in Zambia to target the most at-risk groups in the country.

Summary: This study identified several DNA methylation biomarkers of cigarette smoking in the postmortem human brain, focusing on the nucleus accumbens (NAc). Seven smoking-related CpG sites were identified, with four being novel for smoking-related DNA methylation changes. The findings offer insights into brain-specific responses to smoking exposure.

Summary: This study aimed to better understand the inequitable impact of the pandemic by examining the associations between stay-at-home orders and indoor smoking in public housing, measured by ambient particulate matter at the 2.5-micron threshold, a marker for secondhand smoke. The study found that stay-at-home orders led to increased indoor secondhand smoke in public housing, highlighting the disproportionate impact on socio-economically disadvantaged communities.
